MAY DUGAN CENTER • 2011 ANNUAL REPORT

Letter from the Board President and Executive Director

This past year, the May Dugan Center was true to its mission of “helping people enrich and advance their lives and communities.” This was accomplished with a focused Board of Directors, staff, volunteers and much support from individual donors and a philanthropic community. Our 2011 service statistics showed an unprecedented increase in demand for all program areas. In fact, we recorded nearly 30,000 visits to the Center.

In 1974, when the City of Cleveland authorized the May Dugan Center to manage the facility, its intent was to operate as a “multi-service center” for health and human service related programming. Today, it continues to serve that purpose as several agencies collaborate by helping people “enrich and advance their lives and communities.”

The growth of our programs is made possible by working with many collaborating partners. The Cleveland Food Bank, Westlake School District, St. Mark Catholic Church, Rocky River United Methodist, Center for Families

and Children and many volunteers made our Food and Clothing Program a huge success. Lakewood ABLE and the Ohio Board of Regents continue to support our Education and Resource Center initiative. Our Adopt-A-

Family Program brought great joy to many children and adults through the generous sponsorship of individuals, corporations, churches and local businesses.

Our Board of Directors adopted a new initiative to develop and implement a Health and Wellness Program for our surrounding communities. St. Vincent Charity Hospital, Lutheran Hospital, Case Western Reserve University and Metro Health (McCafferty) have all joined our efforts to provide preventive care through health screenings and education. The McGregor Foundation provided a start-up grant for this initiative.

We are most grateful to our Board Leadership for their timeless commitment to participate with the Building, Development, Finance and Program committees. Their leadership has helped shape a much more solid and sustainable operation. At our annual Board and Staff Retreat, we carefully addressed the following areas: Building Operations, Development, Sustainability and Building Strategic Alliances. This is an on-going project with specific tasks for measurable outcomes.

Without the support from the many volunteers and donations from individuals, foundations, corporations and the business community, we would not be able to meet the needs of the thousands of individuals and families that seek assistance at May Dugan. We sincerely appreciate your support and hope that you will continue.

Sincerely,

Julie M. Rehm, Ph.D. Rick A. Kemm, MNOPresident, Board of Directors Executive Director

Education & Resource CenterThis past June, the Education and Resource Center celebrated its one year anniversary of providing GED, ESOL and other educational programming. In partnership with Lakewood ABLE, over 250 individuals enrolled in the programs, while 38 individuals earned their GED. In addition, the Center has the highest GED graduation rate among all of the ABLE sites in Northeast Ohio. As the ERC continues to be a valuable community resource, we would

like to thank the following foundations for their continued support: Reinberger Foundation, Cyrus

Eaton and United Black Fund. MomsFirst The MomsFirst program provided assistance to 148 Pregnant and Parenting Adolescent Women totaling 1,776 units of service. The program’s goal of ensuring a healthy pregnancy and continued education was provided by Community Health Workers. Educational topics that are covered include: prenatal care, family planning, breastfeeding, infant/child development and much more.

Comprehensive Case Management & Counseling The Case Management and Counseling Program at the May Dugan

Center provided assistance to 357 new clients during 2011. In addition to the carry-over clients from the previous year, a total

of 1,720 units of service were provided. This includes clients seeking assistance with employment, housing, mental health

and other needs. The Community West Foundation, Reuter Foundation, Thomas C. & Sandra S. Sullivan Foundation,

The Cleveland Foundation, Reinberger Foundation and the Eva L. & Joseph M. Bruening Foundation provided support toward this critical programming.

Adopt A FamilyEvery year, the Holiday Adopt A Family Program

continues to grow. A total of 214 individuals received gifts from over 16 sponsoring groups/individuals. Many of

the sponsors involve multiple employees/partners. Sponsors included: Jones Day, Key Bank, ASK Chemicals, Microsoft

Corporation, Weston Hurd, LLP, Rocky River United Methodist Church, St. Christopher Catholic Church, St. Mark Church, Lynne

Filicko & Family, Charles Rini, Jr., Caryn Candisky, Pat & Sandy Reynolds, Sheila Romes. Sponsors are matched with clients from the May Dugan Case Management Staff who are seeking assistance with Basic Human Service needs, as well as support during the Holiday Season.

MAY DUGAN CENTER • 2011 ANNUAL REPORT

William Caldwell The May Dugan Center would like to pay tribute to former Board Member and long time volunteer, William “Bill” Caldwell. Mr. Caldwell passed away on May 18, 2011 peacefully at his home in Cincinnati. In addition to serving as a volunteer at May Dugan, he dedicated much of his time and heart into several other nonprofit organizations. We would like to thank the following individuals who made donations in Bill’s name:

John Bertrand, Lucile Carey, Rosemary Donzella, Patricia Falconer, Harry & Ann Farmer, Joanne Gall, Kathryn Gene, Charles & Linda Haines, Kathleen House, Lou Keim, Bryan Lenocker, Gail Long, Richard Nosse, Lauren Persons, Rebecca Rocco, Jerry & Barb Ryan, Jo Ann Schatz, John Seibenick, Donna Squyres, Tim & Gail Sulak, Laura Smith Traverso, James, Reginald Turner & Mary Wehrle

Volunteer HighlightsMore than 125 individuals volunteered for one or more projects at the May Dugan Center. Volunteer projects included: painting, landscaping, food & clothing distribution day, receptionist, tutoring, maintenance, holiday decorating, governance and more. In addition, a volunteer advisory committee was formed to begin the development and implementation of the MDC “Health & Wellness Program.” May Dugan received on-going support from Business Volunteers Unlimited. More than 30 people volunteered with the planning of the first “Feathers and Fedoras” special 40th anniversary event.

Food & Clothing Distribution DayIn partnership with the Cleveland Food Bank and the Hunger Network, 6,344 individuals received assistance from the Food/Clothing Distribution Program. In addition May Dugan hosted a “Farmers Market” during the months of June – December. A total of 132,849 pounds of food was distributed, serving more than 110,000 meals. This was an increase of 20% over 2010.

Delivery ProjectIn 2011, the May Dugan Center, in collaboration with Malachi House, was able to provide slightly damaged, but brand new couches, rugs, living room chairs, and miscellaneous furniture items to 39 families and individuals. Through our Case Management and Counseling Program, an assessment was completed on our clients to confirm the need. Arrangements are made with volunteer students from Saint Ignatius High School “Movers Program” to by-pass the many hassles involved with the delivery process. More than ten volunteers from Saint Ignatius proudly picked up and delivered the heavy furniture. We are most grateful to Arhaus Furniture for their generous contributions.

We would like

to give a special thank you to all of

our sponsors that helped make this event possible: Trevor &

Jennie Jones, Voss Industries, Buckeye Community Health Plan, Great Lakes Brewery

and Cleveland Public Power, Councilman Joe Cimperman, Plantscaping Inc, the Home Depot-Lakewood, & Eart Fare

for all of their exceptionally generous donations to the event.

Tree Lighting Ceremony On December 1, the May Dugan Center brought holiday joy to those who joined us for the lighting of the 50 ft tall tree located in the MDC plaza. Over 5,000 LED lights lit up the corner of Bridge and Randall Street and brought the holiday spirit alive at May Dugan! The May Dugan Holiday Tree symbolized the help and hope we provide to our clients on a daily basis.
