INTRODUCTION

PSL Consulting is pleased to submit our proposal for a 2-3 day Strategic Management Retreatfor your organization.

Our experience reveals that real sustainable growth comes from a combination of reflection,learning from others and committing to doing new things. We believe the best way to achievethis is to retreat. That is, to step away from the day-to-day work activities for a few hours, a dayor even several days, depending on the type and degree of change that's needed.

In collaboration with your in-house management team, we will define specific objectives for thestrategic retreat, gather and analyze relevant information, design the retreat meeting plan,prepare retreat materials (slides, posters, handouts, workbooks, etc), facilitate the retreatsessions and follow-up with a participant assessment of the retreat’s effectiveness. At ourretreats, successful leaders share lessons learned or we facilitate discussions that result in newideas that can be applied immediately.

This activity based strategic retreat is designed to provide a completely different experience,unlike anything the participants have been exposed to at other retreats. It provides theparticipants with a unique opportunity for in-depth analysis and dialogue with peers andcolleagues on key strategic issues relevant to your organization and its industry.

BACKGROUND

Strategic retreats are generally thought of as an effective way to channel the focused energy ofyour workforce in an uninterrupted format to achieve large-scale results. They provide effectiveoff-site planning, business review, team bonding, problem-solving and decision-making sessionsaway from daily work distractions.

If well planned and conducted in a relaxed and innovative thinking environment, retreats cancreate passion, innovative processes and improved performance by garnering the excitement ofthe participants and focusing them on the future possibilities thereby generating a sense ofcommitment and corporate renewal.

A well-run strategic retreat can also re-focus an organization and break down the walls (silos)that have grown between divergent interest groups, within the management or sometimesbetween management and Staff.

TYPICAL STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT RETREAT DURATION

Our typical strategic retreat sessions span about 2-3 days, and can be followed up by breakoutconsulting and/or coaching sessions (optional).

TYPICAL RETREAT OUTLINE

To optimize participant’s concentration and engagement during the retreat we recommendthat the retreat be held at an offsite location. Although this isn’t necessary, it does help shutout distractions.

During the retreat, participants will be taken through a process to assess goals, strategies andmeasures for your organization. Then alternative strategies are explored, with participantsbroken into group to debate and select the most suitable options for your industry, goals,structure and resources.

Most importantly, each participant is required to commit to specific individual actions toimprove corporate performance. These individual and corporate actions are compiled to createan actionable plan which provides a clear road map for the future.

The review process goes as follows:

Start with a review of the mission, vision, and values. Make sure that these statementsare current and still relevant to your organization.

Assess the long-term business assumptions and conduct a traditional SWOT (strengths,weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis. This step provides a currentunderstanding of the marketplace and the true capabilities of your organization.

Identify the long-term strategic objectives. Quite often these stay the same for severalyears, with just a few modifications. Your strategic objectives are the big mileposts onthe way to your vision.

Set short-term goals and action items if possible. Normally the team does not spendtime in the details; instead, assign a goal to a team member who can then flesh out howit will get accomplished.

Review adequacy of existing corporate strategies to achieve both long term and shortterm strategic objectives. This strategic review should incorporate the result of theSWOT analysis carried out earlier on.

At the end of the retreat, we collect all of the work completed during the sessions andcompile it into a final document. This provides a formal record of the retreat andensures that all employees are aware of what they’re responsible for achieving. If thedeveloped actionable plan is meticulously followed through by your organization, theretreat will yield a return on investment that is probably unsurpassable by any otherprogramme.

Our approach for securing the needed buy-in is to encourage and provide channels for youremployees to express their views and opinion. Employees often know what to do to achievecorporate objectives but require the opportunity to discuss, reflect and make suggestions. Thisapproach evokes a spirit of comradeship – organization wide team spirit - and a positiveattitude from your workforce, because of the visible action that is seen to be taken tounderstand and accommodate their views and opinions.

The retreat format will also require that participants break into work groups to deliberate onvarious topics and report back on their findings. Each group will be required to appoint a scribe(with legible handwriting) and a time keeper. Another scribe with a laptop computer will alsobe assigned to each group. Ah the conclusion of each module the group scribe is required totransfer the information into the planning document template.

General and group discussions will be conducted in aboardroom format, in which everyone can participate.Over time, this approach has proven effective at facilitatinglearning and change in adults.
