8:45 a.m. how Money Feels: why user Experience (ux) beats user interface (ui) Lee Wetherington, Director of Strategic Insight, Jack Henry & Associates, Inc, Valdosta, GA

What consumers see (UI) is only as good as how it makes them feel (UX). In the rush to build out digital channels, many banks get lost in the mechanics of moving money and lose sight of money’s meaning to the parties at either end of a transaction. To remain relevant, banks must not only shift their focus from money movement to money management, they must also master the art of engagement, i.e., the ability to create repeated, satisfying interactions that enhance the emotional connection between the customer and the bank. What does that look like? And how can you leverage digital services to replace the negative emotions of money (anxiety, guilt, impulse) with positive emotions (control, confidence, empowerment)? Join Wetherington for an eye-opening look at the future of digital banking.

workshop #1 (Executive/operations Track) Think like a Freak: A guide to Thinking Strategically Lee Wetherington, Director of Strategic Insight, Jack Henry & Associates, Inc, Valdosta, GA

Strategy is best done from the future backwards, but it’s hard to see ahead with built-in blind spots. In addition to intellectual, political, and moral prejudices, all of us are dogged by a set of more than 60 cognitive biases documented by 40 years of research in behavioral psychology and economics. Economist Steve Levitt and writer Stephen Dubner’s latest book, Think Like a Freak, is widely celebrated for its compelling and entertaining exposé of cognitive biases that skew our perceptions and endanger our ability to think, see, and act rationally. Join Wetherington as he reviews the top biases and blind spots impairing banks’ strategic foresight and learn how to “think like a freak.”

10:15 a.m. branch Transformation: gateway to Customer Engagement David L. Peterson, Chief Strategy Officer, i7 Strategies, Hahira, GA

Significant discussions are ongoing about the future of the physical branch. Transformative ideas such as conversion into an automated transaction center or a makeover of the lobby, converting it into a something akin to an upscale hotel or coffee bar are actively considered. But none of these options address the fundamental question: What compelling reason does a customer and prospect have to come into a branch in the first place? The advance of the virtual branch and the ability of customers to transact at a time and place of their choosing have severely reduced branch activity. With negative PR limiting banks’ choices in closing low performing branches, it is time to look at a new paradigm in what the root issue actually is. The key is engagement: creating reasons for customers and prospects to interact with the institution, both online and in-person. Join Peterson in this content-rich session where he will discuss specific strategies on how to change to an engagement-driven branch service model that will strategically integrate into your virtual branch services.
