Stratus can handle multiple audio programs encapsulated in a DRM/DI MDI format as well as one audio input for analog AM broadcasting or for simulcast when combined with a DRM/DI MDI input. For SFN or SMFN operation, Stratus can be synchronized by means of optional items: either external or internal GPS or through an external NTP server and a 1 PPS time reference. In order to feed all transmitter types, the internal state of art digital signal processing delivers either: Phase and amplitude RF modulated signal for linear amplification transmitters Analog envelope and phase RF modulated signal for any broadcasting transmitter IQ base band signal for Thomson S7HP transmitter family or any digital RF synthesizer Digital envelope and phase RF modulated signal for Thomson broadcasting transmitters In addition Stratus delivers a non- modulated RF signal by means of an internal digital synthesizer covering the entire AM frequency range. As a basic feature, Stratus is equipped with an RF feedback to perform automatic and dynamic delay adjustment, ensuring an optimal output signal quality at any frequency. Stratus control and monitoring is performed using its web-server access or through an optional dedicated front panel. Service Continuity Facility The Stratus platform also supports an optional DRM/DI MDI automatic switchover function. You can activate this function to control and to monitor a main and a stand-alone DRM/DI MDI stream; automatically switch on a stand-alone stream in the event of problems with the main stream; and to recover nominal configuration when problems on the main stream have been resolved. Of course, you can also set up redundant configuration and switchover criteria to comply with your specific requirements related to service continuity. Real Time Channel Coder/Modulator The coding and modulation functions are performed by means of a powerful embedded digital processing. Stratus can deliver all the standardized DRM digital modes up to 20 kHz bandwidth. In compliance with the DRM Standard, different protection levels are available to fit all conditions of propagation from LW/MW daytime flat channel to the most disturbed SW multipath channels. Stratus may be operated in standard analog AM mode, with/without dynamic control of the carrier, in full digital mode and simulcast mode. KEY FEATURES

STRATUS

DRM MODUL ATOR /RF EXCITER

Stratus (TXW 5126D) is the versatile confi guration of a DRM modulator/RF exciter designed to feed any AM broadcasting transmitter or linear amplifi cation transmitter.

www.thomson-broadcast.com

Overview

Stratus is designed to feed either linear amplifi cation transmitters or any AM broadcasting transmitter (PDM/PSM type, Direct Digital Synthesis type, etc.).

In order to feed all transmitter types, the internal state of art digital signal processing delivers either:

Phase and amplitude RF modulated • signal for linear amplifi cation transmitters

Analog envelope and phase RF • modulated signal for any broadcasting transmitter

IQ base band signal for Thomson S7HP • transmitter family or any digital RF synthesizer

Digital envelope and phase RF • modulated signal for Thomson broadcasting transmitters

In addition Stratus delivers a non-modulated RF signal by means of an internal digital synthesizer covering the entire AM frequency range.

As a basic feature, Stratus is equipped with an RF feedback to perform automatic and dynamic delay adjustment, ensuring an optimal output signal quality at any frequency.

Stratus control and monitoring is performed using its web-server access or through an optional dedicated front panel.

Service Continuity Facility

The Stratus platform also supports an optional DRM/DI MDI automatic switchover function. You can activate this function to control and to monitor a main and a stand-alone DRM/DI MDI stream;

automatically switch on a stand-alone stream in the event of problems with the main stream; and to recover nominal confi guration when problems on the main stream have been resolved.

Of course, you can also set up redundant confi guration and switchover criteria to comply with your specifi c requirements related to service continuity.

Real Time Channel Coder/Modulator

The coding and modulation functions are performed by means of a powerful embedded digital processing. Stratus can deliver all the standardized DRM digital modes up to 20 kHz bandwidth.

In compliance with the DRM Standard, diff erent protection levels are available to fi t all conditions of propagation from LW/MW daytime fl at channel to the most disturbed SW multipath channels. Stratus may be operated in standard analog AM mode, with/without dynamic control of the carrier, in full digital mode and simulcast mode.

SKYWAVE 2000: THOMSON’S ANSWER TO END-TO-END DIGITAL AM BROADCASTING

Digital Integrated Synthesizer

The internal digital RF synthesizer is specifi cally designed with up to date high speed signal processing components in order to ensure the highest output signal quality and spectrum purity from a complex I/Q signal.

The digital synthesizer is able to feed the RF path of most existing broadcast transmitters as it can deliver a non-modulated RF, a phase modulated RF and a phase and amplitude modulated RF.

Such a fl exible synthesizer fulfi ls standard requirements for standard AM analog transmitters and specifi c needs for either linear or non-linear amplifying RF chain delivering DRM complex signal. It is capable to deliver very high signal quality up to 20 kHz bandwidth in full digital modes.

Automatic Delay Adjustment

As particularly interesting feature for AM broadcasters, Stratus off ers a dynamic functionality performing automatic delay adjustment between phase and envelope paths.

A sample of RF output is demodulated and processed by means of an embedded RF demodulator to perform permanent dynamic adjustment. This ensures the best performance (out-of-band emission, shoulder) for any selected frequency and transmission mode.

SFN Operation

Since SFN networks require all transmitter signals to be bit identical, the modulator clocks at the diff erent transmitting sites must be synchronized. Therefore Stratus is able to be synchronized by means of optional items: internal or external GPS receiver or through external NTP server and 1 PPS time reference.

Operation and Control

A web-server facility provides appropriate means for Stratus full remote control and monitoring. As an option, Stratus can be equipped with a Thomson dedicated front panel allowing local control and monitoring.

From Studio to Digital AM Transmitters, Auxiliaries, Antennas and more, Thomson is your best choice for a crystal clear DRM signal on air.

Photos of Stratus without and with dedicated front panel

This front panel is equipped with a screen with interactive menu, a bar graph displaying the output level and eight LEDs. These LEDs indicate faults with red color, warnings with orange color and normal operation with green color.

By having a quick look at the LED color, the operator gets information related to the global status and can also select any detailed information to be displayed on the LCD screen. As an option, Stratus can be equipped with a Thomson dedicated front panel allowing local control and monitoring.
