GUESTS SERVED 2014-2015 SEASON November 3, 2014 TO March 28, 2015

From the Desk of the Executive Director…. Due to the hard work of our Mountain Initiative Team and the openness of the congregants at Immanuel Christian Reformed Church, we opened a dinner site in January. Although by the end of the season the number of guests was not huge, the numbers did keep increasing throughout the season as the guests found us at our new site. Many more women and children attended our Mountain dinner than do the downtown dinner which is what we expected. Our Board has now approved the opening of a second new site next season on the Mountain. We will be opening at St Stephen on the Mount Anglican Church on Concession Street.

Dinner Program for Women Only One of our partners had indicated that a meal for women and their children only might be appreciated by women who find eating in the presence of men stressful given their personal histories.

Whew! This has been a busy year at HOOTC. Our fabulous volunteers served 24,726 delicious breakfasts and dinners to some very grateful guests. Thank you! Following are some of the highlights of the season.

A Fond Farewell We were sad to say goodbye to one of the founders of HOOTC, Gloria Colizza. Gloria passed away on January 4, 2015. HOOTC started in the hearts of Sister Carole Anne Guay and her friend Gloria both retired teachers from Hamilton. They invited others to join in their vision and dream of feeding the poor. HOOTC began December 1, 1997. May you rest in peace Gloria.

New Mountain Site As a result of our Strategic Plan undertaken last year, we had determined to investigate the possibility of opening a site on Hamilton Mountain.

Serving Hamilton since 1997

To this end, we converted our Saturday night meal at Christ’s Church Cathedral into a Women Only meal. Despite various efforts to make this initiative known in the community and with the help of our partners, few women attended. In February, the dinner at the Cathedral was opened again to men. A program for women only though has not fallen off our radar and we continue to be receptive to offering something for women at some point. Continued on Page 2

Lococo’s

We further developed our relationship with A. Lococo Wholesale this season. We get a discount over a certain amount of food purchased. We also now pay on credit which reduces the amount of cash our shoppers need to carry. Best of all, we receive (gratis) good produce which Lococo’s is removing from their shelves while it is still good. We receive from both the Barton Street and Nebo Road sites which our talented cooks then turn into delicious meals. The produce we cannot use is then taken to other agencies who are grateful to receive it. Thank you Lococo’s!

Public Health

All our sites were visited by Public Health inspectors for the first time. There were some minor changes needed to be done but all in all, good reports were received. HOOTC continues to be dedicated to preparing, cooking and storing food in the safest way possible for the good of our guests.

Our Benefactors

We are most fortunate to have received donations from the following individuals/groups. May God bless you abundantly for helping our less fortunate sisters & brothers.

Our program is a registered charity. Tax receipts are available and given out in January.

Media Coverage

Any of you who read the series by Jon Wells in the Hamilton Spectator the week around Christmas about Food Insecurity will know that HOOTC figured prominently. Sometimes news outlets don’t get it quite right but we believe Jon hit the nail right on the head. To me, what sums up what HOOTC is all about but which I had not thought of so starkly before Jon mentioned it in one of the articles is that the people who come for the meals are called ‘guests’, not clients or patrons or some other title. That is so true, that sums up what HOOTC is all about: we treat people with courtesy, dignity and compassion as we would for any guest in our own homes. We were also covered by a few articles in the Hamilton Mountain News which served to make our new Mountain site better known. Cable 14 did an item on HOOTC on their Hamilton Life program shown on Feb 24th which is available for viewing on their website.

Moving of the HOOTC Office

In March we received notice from our landlords that our office space would be needed for other purposes by January 1, 2016. We have been truly blessed to have received donated office space courtesy of Steve Pocrnic and Darivoj Vranich since 2006. Thank you gentlemen! We are putting out the word that we are looking for space to move into with either donated rent or a low rent. We need some office space as well as space for the produce we are now receiving from Lococo’s and storage. If anyone reading this has any ideas please let us know at the office: 905 308 8447. May God’s Blessings be upon you all.
