Student Impact Summit

We will be having an NJHS

meeting on Tuesday after

spring break to discuss our

tutoring service initiative. We

will meet in Mrs. Nagle's

room from 2:30-

3:15pm. Students should be

planning to commit to either

Tuesday's or Thursday's and

working with our primary

students during the 2:30-3:20

time frame. We will try to run

follow up meetings during

lunch time so that students

are able to work that into

other commitments. We are

looking forward to making

NJHS more than just an

award, but a movement here

at St Peter!

The Scoop on Homemade Slime

The use and making of homemade slime or putty has become increasingly popular in

the past several years and has become a craze here at St. Peter as well. One of the

ingredients often used in homemade and store-bought slime is Borax. Borax, or

sodium borate, is a chemical that can be toxic if not safely diluted, especially if it gets

into the eyes or lungs. While it may be toxic if ingested, pediatricians say that using

small amounts of the substance for making slime shouldn’t cause any harmful

effects. Caution however, should be taken to limit the amount of dust raised when

using Borax. Also, be careful to avoid splashing the Borax mixture around in the

kitchen or other areas when the slime is being made. A final suggestion would be to

wash your hands regularly after using the slime, especially before eating. This helps

to limit the possible dangers of the Borax and bacteria and germ exposure that may

occur from the slime coming into contact with numerous hands and surfaces.

MAP TESTING

Students in K-8 will be taking the MAPS assessment for the second time in the two

weeks following Spring Break. Your child’s homeroom teacher will know the

specific days. Results will be shared after all assessments are completed.

AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS PLANT & FLOWER SALE

Its spring and the American Heritage Girls are having their annual plant and flower

sale. A list of available items and order forms are included in the Friday Flyer. Our

ten inch hanging baskets make a wonderful Mother's Day Gift and our flats are

lush and full! We continue to use the same, high-quality supplier. Order forms are

due to any AHG Troop Member or the school office by Friday, April 28th and the

delivery day is Wednesday, May 10th. Thank you for supporting our young women

and their scouting program.

AUTISM AWARENESS APRIL 7TH

Information about autism will be shared with students during this week with an

Awareness Day on Friday, April 7th. Wear blue that day to support awareness.

ST. BALDRICK'S UPDATE

Thank you so much for all of your generous support during our St. Baldrick's event.

We had 18 participants who shaved their heads and donated hair to stand in solidarity

with children fighting cancer. Thanks to your generous donations we were able to

reach our goal this year, raising $5,162.85 to help fund childhood cancer research. A

special shout out to our top fundraiser, Miles Smith, who donated his hair and raised

$1,715, our fifth graders who collectively raised over $2,000, and our first through

eighth graders who donated $838.85 in coins. We are grateful for your support

All 6th

and 7th

grade tech students have a Schoology

account in which projects and assignments are

posted. Schoology is an online learning management

system similar to Google classroom but more powerfull

and with greater capabilities. It is also the main learning

management system used in surrounding district high

schools. Student Schoology accounts were set up using

their secure school Google accounts and can be accessed

from any computer – both school and home.

All 6th

and 7th

grade students are currently completing

projects and assignments using 100% online tools which

can also be accessed from any computer.

6th

grade: Students should be finishing up the 6 assigned

Tynker lessons (online) plus the Tynker game. These lessons

should be completed upon return of spring break. Completion

of the Tynker lessons and game will be their first grade of the

new (4th!) quarter. If students have completed Tynker, they can

move on to the next coding activity using an MIT program

called Alice. This program is one of the few we will be using

that are not online and, therefore, can only be accessed at

schoo,l as their progress is saved on our local server.

7th

grade: We have finished designing our 3D land tiles and

moved on to creating virtual reality space in an online program

called CoSpaces. With written parent permission, students

may download the CoSpaces app on their phone and students

may bring their phone to tech class only, on the day of class,

to test out their designed space. Written permission (on any

paper) must be given to me first. We have also tinkered with the

3D printers in our lab and students have enjoyed creating and

printing 3D objects.

8th

grade: 8th grade tech has started a new project, a

Washington D.C. brochure that they will be working on in

class. It is tentatively due on May 12.

solving real world problems involving

systems of equations

when there is not a point of intersection

and what that means about the system.

8th Grade Students will be working on correcting

their mistakes on the cumulative

Science in the News…

Did you know…that smartphones may be changing the way we

think. Laboratory studies hint that technology, and its constant

interruptions, may change our thinking strategies. Our devices have

become “memory partners,” allowing us to dump information there and

forget about it — an off-loading that comes with benefits and drawbacks.

Navigational strategies may be shifting in the GPS era, a change that might

be reflected in how the brain maps its place in the world. Constant

interactions with technology may even raise anxiety in certain settings.

Specifically speaking…

6th Grade

We finished a lab on temperature and the angles of sunlight and have

begun our unit on major weather events—thunderstorms, flash floods,

tornados, and hurricanes—how they form, are detected, and how they are

rated. As we move into spring this is a very timely topic! We will end the

unit with a lesson on weather forecasting.

7th Grade

We finished our unit on modern genetics with a test over this unit on

Thursday. When we return from spring break, we will be doing a lab on

extracting DNA from our cells. We will then spend a few days on the topic

of evolution as we examine this theory from a Christian perspective,

helping students form sound, scientific responses to it from a Christian

viewpoint.

8th Grade

We have finished our unit on chemical equations and chemical

reactions with a test over this unit on Thursday. We will then start our next

unit on solutions, acids and bases and their importance in our everyday

lives after spring break.
