Welcome to our July edition of Sturt Street News!

This month our mission’s focus is on children’s ministries. As a church we support various children’s ministries throughout the nations. Within this issue of Sturt Street News we have included articles on children’s ministires in Fiji, Sri Lanka and the Philippines.

I am excited to be leading a team of young people to the Solomon Islands this month. I’m sure we will have a lot of footage and stories to share with all of you on Facebook and in next month’s Sturt Street News. An outline of our trip is available on page 37.

INFORMATIONCONNECT GROUPS

EMPOWER AND ENGAGE CONNECT GROUPMikaela Groom

Our Empower Youth and Engage Young Adults connect group is held on Tuesday nights during the school term from 7-8:30pm.

Our connect groups for term two have begun with an ice breaker activity, a short video relating to the study, a whole group discussion of the night’s study, and a tea and coffee break followed by smaller group discussions.

We have a great number of people who attend our connect group. Everyone comes from all different backgrounds and

circumstances which makes our group an interesting one! We have high school students, university students and people who are out in the workforce.

We enjoy coming together as a united group where we have the opportunity to have a lot of fun and engage in Biblical discussions. It is awesome that we have the chance to connect with one another and hear each other’s hearts through group discussions.

If you are between the ages of 12 and 25 we would love for you to join us in our connect group! Please speak to one of the Empower Youth leaders if you have any further questions.

We have included an interview with one of our connect group members on the following page (page 10) so be sure to check it out!

CONNECT GROUPS

GET TO KNOW JOSH GROOMHow old are you?

21 years old

Where were you born?

Auckland, New Zealand

When did you move to Australia?

January 2003

What do you do with yourself? Job/Study?

I have been unemployed and begging mum and dad for money since leaving school three years ago. Nah, not really. I previously had a part time job at Royal

Adelaide Golf Club for two and a half years. At the beginning of this year I was offered a professional golf traineeship at another golf club which will go for three years. This traineeship involves me working full time, completing a Certifcate III in Sport Career Oriented Participation and a Certificate IV in Small Business Management and a Diploma in Sport Coaching, as well as playing on the trainee circuit.

If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why?

I would be a lion because the image of me running down a wild zebra would look impressive to my lion wife.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was young I wanted to be a professional skateboarder. Growing up I knew I always wanted to do something in sport when I finished school. Golf has ended up being the one.

If your friends/family were to describe you in three words what would those three words be?

Annoying, lazy and fun.

Do you prefer Coke or Pepsi?

Coke! Pepsi doesn’t agree with me.

What are the best aspects of being involved in a connect group?

The name in itself gives my answer, connecting with others. That is pretty cool. Building relationships with people, having good times together and learning with each other is pretty cool.

GIGGLE PATCH PLAYGROUP0-6 Years

We identify playgroups as holding many benefits for children, families and the overall community.

Giggle Patch Playgroup runs every Wednesday morning from 10am-12pm at 27 Sturt Street, Adelaide during school terms. An indoor playground and a variety of other activities are available for children under 6 years of age.

Parents are encouraged to come along to enjoy some time together where they can create new friendships and continue to develop existing ones. The children are able to play together and have some fun.

Tea and coffee is provided for parents. Everyone is requested to please bring a gold coin donation.

Giggle Patch Playgroup only runs during the school term and does not run during the school holidays.

We have enjoyed seeing some new faces in 2018 and are expecting really great things for the remainder of this year.

If you would like any further information on the Giggle Patch Playgroup or if you would like to volunteer, please contact Raquel Edwards or Rebekah Groom for details.

The church office is also available to offer further information. You may contact the church office via email or by phone.

CRÈCHE0-3 Years

Our crèche is open every Sunday morning during the service for all those aged 0-3 years. Parents are welcome to sign their kids in anytime from 9:45am and are asked to sign them out no later than 11:45am or whenever the service finishes.

Whilst crèche is running there are at least two of our church volunteers in the room to supervise and look after the children. Our volunteers do their best to make sure your children feel comfortable and settled in our crèche environment, and will ensure they have lots of fun!

Our crèche consists of an open space where children have access to a variety of fun toys, craft materials, books and more.

Children also have the opportunity to enjoy our indoor playground where they have the freedom to play and interact with other children.

Attached to our crèche is a feeding room for breast feeding mothers and babies. An audio link and a window looking out into the auditorium allows mothers to see and hear what is going on in the church service whilst they are using the room.

In term three our team will continue to run a fun biblical series made for toddlers. The overall series is called ‘My Big Backyard’ and teaches our kids that God is a good friend and shows them how they can be good friends too! The main character, Jack, faces some backyard dilemmas. With the help of a few backyard bugs, he learns how to be a good friend. The series also features relevant Bible stories.

GROW3-6 Years

It is already July - I am amazed by how fast this year is flying by!

With July comes school holidays which means no Grow for two weeks. The school holidays will begin after our special Sturt Street Kids family service on Sunday 8th July.

In June our Grow children spent some time learning about why we should obey God and how we can obey Him.

In July our focus will be on family, in particular on grandparents.

I hope everyone has a lovely break from school and that you all enjoy your holidays.

My challenge for July is for everyone to find a hero in the Bible. This should be easy as there are a lot of them!

Your challenge is to learn about them and the time in which they lived. The next step is to share this information with a friend - tell them about your hero!

Hopefully they have also done the challenge so that they can share with you about their hero also.

See how many heroes you can gather throughout July!

Thank you everyone for your ongoing support and prayers for our Grow program. Your support and prayers are very much appreciated.

God Bless, Cassie Beattie

ELEVATE7-11 Years

Term two has been a fantastic term for Elevate. We have been learning about Bible superheroes and have covered characters such as Moses, Joshua, Elijah, Daniel and Paul.

The impression we hope our Elevate children leave with after these studies is that Bible heroes can live in their hearts with an even more dynamic impact than today’s superheroes.

July brings about the school holiday break which means Sturt Street Kids will be taking a break for two weeks. Elevate will begin again in term three at the end of July. We hope everyone has an enjoyable and safe school holiday break!

July Dates and Topics

Bible Superheroes: Jesus Sunday 1st July

Our first Sunday in July will be focusing on our final Bible superhero Jesus!

Sturt Street Kids Family Service Sunday 8th July

Our morning service on Sunday the 8th of July will take a different spin as our Sturt Street Kids team will be leading it.

Come along to church for a 10am start and join in the fun as our junior band leads worship and our children perform various items.

Feel free to invite your friends and families as we come along and join together to celebrate our children.

SENIORS50+ Years

Welcome to the seniors ministry of Adelaide Christian Centre! Our seniors ministry aims to provide our senior members of our church with a challenging, inspiring and encouraging support network. A place where they can gather together to support one another and share life together. Thank you to all those who gather regularly to build relationships, give encouragement and do life together.

In Philippians 1:27 Paul inspires us in our faith as we stand together in life. The scripture reads: Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ. Then, whether I come and see

you again or only hear about you, I will know that you are standing together with one spirit and purpose, fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News.

ADELAIDE CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS

A significant part of the mandate of our church is Christian Education. Leo Harris had a vision for Christian Education and plans were developed in 1976 and 1977 for a Christian School. Sunrise Christian School was founded in 1978 in Fullarton. A few years later Temple Christian College was founded as a sister organisation for high school students.

Adelaide Christian Schools (ACS) is an organisation that aims to oversee and support its schools ranging from Reception to Year 12 in co-educational settings and other training establishments. ACS is called to educate and train children in all aspects of life in such a way that God is seen to be the centre of everything - to be an extension of the Christian home, fulfilling the God-given mandate for parents to bring up their children in His ways.

The schools are governed by a Board with membership comprising individuals with vast experience and expertise from a variety of industry sectors. The Board works closely with Committees and Advisory Groups that have been established in each school community to engage with local leadership at a grass roots level, providing an opportunity for local input and expression.

ABOUT USACS governs and supports 11 schools. These schools comprise of approximately 2300 students and in excess of 250 staff. Each school offers its own distinctive qualities that focuses on the role of the family in education, character development and excellence in academics.

A HISTORY OF BETHEL CRUSADE PRESCHOOLS IN FIJIRitchie Yagomate

In 1989 Ps Alipate Yagomate was in Papua New Guinea with his family in the highlands doing his practical for bible school.

During visitation one day he came across a child that was crying and rolling on a dusty track. As he walked closer the Lord asked, “what can you do to stop this child from crying?”

Ps Alipate made a lot of excuses but the Lord continued challenging him as he walked past the child.

As he walked the child’s cry echoed in his ear. He decided to turn back.

Ps Alipate asked the Lord what he should do. The Lord replied, “what do you have in your pocket?” The only money he had was 20 toea. As he pulled the money out the child stopped crying and smiled.

The Lord told Ps Alipate that he had met the need of a single child but there were still millions of crying children out there with no one to meet their needs.

Ps Alipate and his family returned to Fiji in 1991 to register the CRC work and reach the lost, with a focus on reaching Hindus and Muslims.

Unfortunately during this time there was a lot of racial discrimination amongst the Indians and Fijians due to the Coup in 1987. Ps Alipate faced difficulties as a Fijian

man trying to reach Indians for the Lord. He spent many months praying and seeking the Lord for direction.

One afternoon in 1994 Ps Alipate and his wife Boila were going for a walk. The Lord reminded Ps Alipate of the child in the highlands and asked, “how about starting a school of nine for preschoolers?” He shared what the Lord had placed in his heart with Boila and she agreed. They registered the preschool that same year.

Since that time God has brought people alongside them with the same heart for children and the vision to reach the lost for the Kingdom.

We have seven Bethel Crusade Preschools on the two main islands of Fiji (three in Viti Levu and four in Vanua Levu), and one on Koro Island. Our preschool centres in Viti Levu are located in Sigatoka, Suva and Lakena. Our preschool centres in Vanua Levu are located in Savusavu, Nacavanadi, Labasa and Daku.

Since Bethel Crusade Preschools began in 1994, we have graduated more than two thousand children from all of our preschools combined. In 2018 we had to close enrolment in many of our preschools because we have passed our limit.

In addition to this , Hindu and Muslim families are bringing their children into our preschools even though they know we follow a Christian curriculum.

Children learn Bible verses as rhymes, sing gospel songs and make pledges to the Bible. At home they quote scriptures when their parents ask them to say their rhymes. We are beginning to see open doors into

Hindu and Muslim homes and families are coming to know Christ as their Lord and Saviour.

Due to our good reputation and high standard of education, primary schools are asking our teachers to tell our preschool parents to consider their schools for their children’s further education.

Many of the children who graduated from our preschools in the past are now working as police officers, nursers, teachers, local airlines workers, in university etc.

On behalf of Bethel Crusade Preschools I would like to thank everyone that has donated towards our preschools, sponsored our teachers, provided materials for learning, or has visited Fiji for voluntary work or to conduct workshops for our teachers. Thank you for being so faithful and for being obedient to God’s voice.

To the churches that have been with us through the tough times - Waurn Ponds Community Church, Adelaide Christian Centre, Kingston City Church, etc. - thank you for all of your prayers and support. Ps Mike Groom and the team, Dion Beasley and the team, Global Development Group, Door of Hope International and everyone else who provides finances, thank you for your donations.

The preschools have come a very long way but this is not the end. With a new slogan - Better Foundation, Brighter Future, Better Nation - there are plans in place to take our preschool ministry to the next level to impact Fiji and other Pacific Island nations.

If you are ever in Fiji please feel free to drop by, give us a call or even stay with us!

SRI LANKA CHILDREN’S MINISTRY UPDATEOn our boys’ home property we have a building for the kitchen, dining and study area. The roof on this structure was badly damaged due to storm damage and age. We have had to replace the roof because of this. As you can see from the pictures above, the repair work on the roof is now complete. The building still needs painting.

Our Door of Hope Preschool is in need of some major adjustments. The local government has requested for the preschool to be relocated from one building on the property to another. In order for this to happen the new building will need some considerable renovation

work. This work is not yet complete but should be finishing off soon.

Another need for our preschool was finding a new teacher. We are happy to report that a new teacher has been found and is a good fit for the preschool and its needs.

Please continue to pray for our children’s homes and preschool in Sri Lanka.

• Prayer for the health of the children. One boy has recently been having serious problems with his kidneys.

• Prayer for an English tutor for the children as they need to learn English.

• Prayer for a new cook for the boys.

• Prayer for three children who are preparing for their high school exams in August.

PHILIPPINES MISSIONS TRIP REPORTMikaela Groom

On Monday 28th May Shekinah and I headed to the Philippines! We flew via Hong Kong and landed in Cebu in the evening. When we arrived we felt the heat straight away!

We spent the following day preparing for and participating in two children’s feeding programs. Both of these were run in squatter settlements. It was an eye opening experience for the both of us.

The second feeding program of the day was in an area which was quite a walk from the main road. To get to the area we had to

walk past many houses via thin cement paths until we finally reached the program. I was amazed how far back these squatter settlements go. From the main road the entrance looks like a tiny path which may lead to one or two houses. However, as you continue following the path you walk past so many houses and community areas. You would never predict for there to be so much life down a thin cement path.

Early on the Wednesday morning we flew to Tacloban with Ps Allan Manzanilla and two other girls. As soon as we arrived we dropped our bags off at a pension house and then drove about an hour and a half out of Tacloban to a community where we participated in another feeding program.

Many members of the community and neighbouring communities joined in on the program. It consisted of welcome speeches, song and dance, games and

That afternoon we participated in our final feeding program which ran very much the same as the others. One of the highlights of my trip occurred after the feeding program when we had the opportunity to walk with the children back to their homes.

This journey took place in the dark and we had to walk through a pretty rocky mountain. My shoes broke at the beginning but we persevered and had a lot of fun with the kids! They were very chatty and seemed to love having us walk with them.

Both Shekinah and I enjoyed our time in the Philippines and are thankful for having the opportunity to be involved in a great children’s ministry. It was great to see the hard work and determination of those involved in running the feeding programs. Their work and the lengths they go to reach people who may not usually be reached is very inspiring.

On Saturday 14th July the team will head back to Honiara where they will spend their remaining days.

In Honiara the team will be participating in a number of exciting programs. They will have the opportunity to attend a Kenneth Copeland Crusade, participate in outreach in two communities outside of Honiara, run a kids club for children around the church property, as well as participate in night meetings and open air outreach. Their final night will include a fellowship dinner.

Fundraising

All proceeds raised through our Sturt Street Cafe will go towards the fundraising campaign for this missions trip.

concluded with food for the children.

The following morning we made our way to another feeding program in Tacloban. This program was held on a basketball court and was very hot outside the shaded area! After the program we had an opportunity to sit and talk with the community leaders before we headed off to the airport.

We stayed in Cebu overnight. We flew to Iloilo early the following morning with Cleofe Manzanilla. When we arrived in Iloilo we caught a bus and drove six hours to a town where we caught a small boat to Maralison Island.

Although it was raining heavily, the island was beautiful! We were lucky enough to spend a night there with a local family. We spent the afternoon and evening relaxing and even went for a late night swim in the beach when the rain calmed down!

The feeding program was postponed until the following morning due to the bad weather. We got up early the following morning and decided to hike up a mountain before we had to go to the feeding program. We got way too hot and sweaty but the views were worth it!

We left the island straight after the feeding program because we had to travel all the way back to Iloilo. We spent the night in Iloilo with Aunty Cleofe’s sister before flying back to Cebu the following morning. We have now reached Sunday 3rd June in case any of you are lost.

When we arrived in Cebu we made our way to Danao City where the Philippines School of Ministry (PSOM) is located. We arrived just in time to attend their bible school graduation. We were happy to be involved in the celebration and enjoyed the lunch after the service!
