Lavagna:

Farm to Table Italian with a Capitol Hill Edge Michael Higgins

Nestled among the many shops and bistros of the Eastern Market area is a

gem which visitors are sure to enjoy — Lavagna. Exposed brick walls, and

austere, comfortable seating set a warm tone for DC’s answer to farm to

table Italian dining.

The appetizers are a hit with portions that are modestly priced and shareable for two. Lavagna’s

Bruschetta, in particular, sets a new bar for a popular standard. Lemon accented ricotta sitting atop

fresh, crunchy bread is layered with savory, caramelized shallots while heirloom cherry tomatoes top

this culinary delight. The Forest Mushroom Pate’ with pecans and port jelly is earthy, and rich — a

vegetarians dream.

Offering a refined menu, Lavagna’s house-made pasta dishes are among the best in the area. The ravi-

oli in meat sauce is a testament to the art of fine Italian cooking. Rich, creamy ricotta is encased in light

and freshly-made pasta. When cutting into the ravioli, patrons are greeted with a flowing egg yolk; a

technique few professional chefs achieve properly. Rich meat sauce proves to be the perfect accompani-

ment to this dish. The taste, presentation and ample portion size, are reminiscent of a much loved

grandmother’s kitchen and prove why their pasta dishes cannot be missed.

The poultry and beef entrees are somewhat limited but, nevertheless, wonderful. Lavagna’s farm to

table promise is fulfilled with meat which is free range, hormone free and secured from local distribu-

tors. The Bison Short Rib is expertly cider braised and simply delicious while the divine side dishes on

are more than enough for two.

Lavagna’s brunches are the perfect way to enjoy a Sunday with family or friends. Prices range from

$8.00 – $ 19.00. Throw in a $ 12.00 bottomless Mimosa special and you are sure to have delightful

experience.

The libation menu focuses on fine wines of varied vintages in assorted price ranges. A generous selec-

tion of local craft beers can also be found on the menu. Their Craft Cocktails are creative and innova-

tive, but lean towards the sweet side.

Not to be overlooked is the warm and knowledgeable staff of Lavgna,

which is always on point. No question went unanswered. No drink glass

unfilled. They are yet another reason to patronize this delightful establish-

ment.
