IMPORTANT HEALTH & SAFETY ALERTS:

Netball post protectors Although there is no statutory

requirement to use post protectors it may be worth considering them in future PE budget discussions. With

the increase in competitions and with more pupils participating in lessons, clubs and at break/lunch times it is always advisable to protect pupils

from any serious injury that might occur when colliding with a metal post. Please note also that it is essential that moveable posts that are on wheels must be weighted down with appropriate equipment. It

is also wise to remove posts from playground areas when not in use to avoid any potential malpractice and serious injury.

Concussion in PE and school sport

Following a serious case review this year, much information and guidance has been produced to support individuals, clubs and schools when concussion occurs. For up to date guidance and support follow the link:

UPDATE: THE SUFFOLK KEY STAGE 1&2 LEARNING AND TEACHING RESOURCE FOR PE (THE PURPLE FOLDER)

Over the last few weeks the Suffolk Key Stage 1&2 Learning and Teaching Resource for PE has undergone a re-edit. We are re-producing the ‘purple folder’ ready for use in September 2014. It will be aligned to the new national

curriculum expectations but will keep the core tasks as a focus for learning. We will be introducing new guidance for assessment and also a set of new core tasks for athletics and OAA. These two areas of activity were not

included in the 2007 edition. We will also be including a new gymnastics transitional unit of work that supports progressions from KS2-3 which feature the Key Steps skills. These form part of the gymnastics competition element of the

Sainsbury’s School Games. This gymnastics unit of work and

accompanying case study has been developed and trialled by Pakefield High School, East Point Academy and several of their feeder primary schools.

More details will be presented at the forthcoming Primary Network Seminars. The ‘new’ resource will be launched

and used at the New National Curriculum PE Planning and Assessment course at Trinity Park

on the afternoon of the 17th September 2014.

QUEENS BATON RELAY COMING TO SUFFOLK

The Queen's Baton Relay will notch

up some 120 miles and will be seen by an estimated 10,000 people as it makes a special visit to Suffolk next week (9th June 2014)

Having criss-crossed the world and travelled around 68 Commonwealth countries and territories since it left

Buckingham Palace in October, the Baton will reach Suffolk on 9 June - its only visit to the East of England on its way to the XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

SKILLS FROM BRAZIL

Dan Freedman is an acclaimed author and writes children’s books based on

the theme of football. The key character is Jamie Johnson. Several schools in Suffolk have been visited by Dan who provides a great day of exciting writing and reading activity

based on the stories. Kedington Primary School Academy is the latest

school to be visited and by all accounts it was a great day. The brand new Jamie Johnson book – SKILLS FROM BRAZIL – has just come out. It’s perfectly timed for the

World Cup. In celebration of this, Dan Freedman is running a National Book Review Competition to win a Signed England Shirt! For further information and how to enter please follow the link:

PE HOMEWORK RECOMMENDED!

Judy Murray, the mother of tennis player Andy, has called for children to be given “physical education homework” to improve children’s fitness. Ms Murray said introducing

compulsory PE homework would help to improve the activity levels of children outside of the school day. She added: “Modern diets and the multitude of sedentary activities that kids are used to certainly do not help, but it is the fact that children are not

developing the basic aptitudes for sport and exercise that is most worrying.”
