Suicide!

Introduction

In this presentation, I will explain about suicide, its causes, effect, and even the study case that occurs in Indonesia.

Suicide is social issue because the cause of suicide have the relation with their social condition

I choose this topic because it makes me curious, why people really wanted to commit suicide.

What is Suicide?

Based on the Apple dictionary, suicide refers to the actions of killing oneself.

Suicide comes from the Latin word “Sui” means “of oneself” and “Caedere” kill.

Cause of SuicideDeath of someone we love.

A divorce, or breakup of a relationship

Serious illness

Serious loss (loss of jobs, money, house)

Feeling depressed because of the trouble

Being Bullied

Feeling things will never “get better”

Lost of hope

Cultural based*

Misunderstanding of Religion*

Effect of Suicide to Our Friends, Family, and even to our Loved One

When one of our friends, family or our loved one commit suicide, (we call ourselves as a suicide survivor) And the suicide survivor will have a great sadness, disappointment, even anger.

The suicide survivor can get mental illness as well because of the great loss from the friends, family, or loved one that commit suicide.

Even the suicide survivor can commit suicide as well.

Suicide and Culture

Even suicide attempt can be caused based on the culture.

For example in Japan, long time ago, they have a culture of suicide to gain their honor, the suicide is called “Harakiri” or “Seppuku”

Is a culture of suicide that comes from Japan to gain its honor.

Cut out his/her stomach and take out his/her intestine.

To gain its honor, he/she do this culture.

Misunderstanding of Religion

Some people misunderstand how to defend their religion.

Some people used mass-suicide to “defend” their religion

For example: Jihad, it is one of misunderstand how to defend their religion

Jihad kill other people to defend their religion

They suicide using the bombs so that they can do a mass killing as well.

Jihad Case in Indonesia

On 30th of September 2010, a guy with an initial AH do a suicide attempt using bomb.

It is located in Sumber Artha Kalimalang

Eye witnesses said that this guy put the bomb on his bicycle and attempt a suicide under the name of Jihad.

He also write a letter that saying that he will take a revenge.

“Ini adalah balasan untuk kalian sekutu-sekutu setan yang membunuh, menghukum, menghukum mati dan menahan mujahidin. Kami siap mati untuk agama yang mulia. Bom syahid ini adalah untuk kalian semua orang-orang kafir, kalian akan kami kejar walaupun kalian lari ke awan, kematian itu pasti mujahidin masih hidup di Indonesia”

Find item to commit suicide (guns, knives, poison)

Writing poems or story about death

Don’t care about his/her health anymore

Being suddenly happy after something that is depressing.

How to Prevent it

Give a lot of hopes

Motivate them that there is still hope

Told that things will get better

Keep them away from guns, knife, poison liquid, and other harmful object. That can cause them to commit suicide

Study Case

I take the case study of David Hartanto, a brilliant students that commit suicide after kill his own mentor. Professor Chang in Singapore

At march 7th 2009 David Hartanto commit suicide after kill his own mentor. People said that his mentor have taken David’s idea.

David get mad ant kill his mentor, maybe he is getting depressed that time then he ended his life by cutting himself and jump from the university.

Conclusion

There are many cause of suicide, we as the suicide survivor need to take care of someone we love so that they don’t commit suicide.

Don’t let your loved one depressed and stressed out.

Help decrease the suicide rate

We all need to be responsible to decrease the suicide rate
