Higher Education students at Manchester’s Churchgate Academy, part of Skills Solutions, are celebrating their success after a record number graduated this summer.

The Academy delivers a range of Foundation and Honours Degree top ups as well as the Professional Diploma in Education and the Professional Graduate Diploma in Education. The courses are validated by the University of Bolton.Director of Churchgate Academy, Lesley Noone said: “We’re really proud of the achievements of this year’s group of students. They’ve all worked hard and deserve this great success. Many of this year’s graduates are in Early Years and Childcare, and that really highlights the professionalisation of the sector.

“Almost all of our students are in full time employment, so it’s important that we offer the flexibility they need to be able to fit their studies in with their work commitments. Also the fact that our part time tuition fees are considerably lower than full time university courses makes studying at Churchgate Academy an attractive prospect.”

“We’re also offering Access courses for people who don’t have the entry qualifications for university in Health and Social Care, Education, and Business. Our mission is to open up opportunities to people who would have found it difficult to access higher education in the past.”

“We’re particularly pleased that a number of this year’s graduates have progressed after completing Apprenticeships with us.”

Carl Tanner, who works at Milk, a digital marketing agency in Manchester said: “I did my Level 3 Apprenticeship in Marketing with the Academy, and at the end of that, one of the tutors came in to talk to us about the Foundation Degree in Business Management. I decided to sign up for it. Working and completing this course has really helped me to develop further, I have been able to apply the theory to my work and my work to my theory. It’s been a really enjoyable experience”

GM APPRENTICES UNDER THE SPOTLIGHTAT SkILLS AWARDS CEREMONY

The awards recognise and celebrate businesses across all sectors who excel in the training and development of their staff. The ceremony was hosted by Dara O’ Briain, comedian, broadcaster and host of the BBC’s ‘The Apprentice You’re Fired’. Dara announced that apprentices and employers supported by Skills Solutions were shortlisted in four categories at the Awards, the ‘Rising Star’ Award, ‘Top Small Business’, ‘Retail Skills for Business’ Award and the ‘Public Sector Skills for Business’ Award and were delighted to congratulate Tonetec and Manchester City Council for coming top in their groupings.

Enterprise apprentice Ciara Fletcher joined Bill Quinn, Managing Director of Stockport-based Tonetech - a specialist supplier of parts for guitars and other stringed instruments who were also nominated in the ‘Top Small Business’ category – to collect their award for ‘Best Retail Business’ at the ceremony.

Ciara, Bill and the rest of the team received this award in recognition of their exceptional contribution to skills and learning on behalf of businesses based in Greater Manchester.

Also representing Skills Solutions was Luke Warburton who was one of only five young people in the region shortlisted for the ‘Rising Star’ award.

Present at event, Fiona Mellett, Managing Director of Skills Solutions, said: “This is great news for Skills Solutions and I’m especially pleased that both the nominations and the award that we’ve achieved, reflect on the efforts of all of our trainees and apprentices.

“We’re delighted to see company’s like Tonetech excel with the support of apprentices like Ciara; it’s fantastic to see a small business embracing apprenticeships in such a positive way and we wish them the best of luck as they continue going from strength to strength.”

Welcome to the Summer edition of the Like Apprenticeships Jobs Newspaper!

As the academic year comes to a close, in this busy edition we outline how we can help you find the right Apprenticeship job, Traineeship or course, include news of the exciting awards we’ve won and, of course, a round up of some of the fantastic vacancies available with us across the region.

It only seems like yesterday, but this month we are also celebrating the first birthday of the country’s first Like Apprenticeships shop in Manchester city centre. Over the past year we are delighted to have placed hundreds of customers into Apprenticeships jobs and training. Our newly established Information & Advice Team are on hand Monday to Saturday at the Like Apprenticeships shop to chat to adults

and young people about how we can help you get a head start on your career. And, as the crucial exam results days loom (A Level results on 14 August and GCSE results on 21 August), our team will be attending a number of schools and Sixth Form Colleges to advise young people of the job and vocational options available to them across the region.

On Thursday, 4th September we will be holding a unique Recruitment Fair where we will speed late applications through to interviews with employers, start dates on vocational courses and our GCSE maths and English programmes.

What’s a Traineeship? A Traineeship is new type of training programme designed to give you the work experience you need to progress onto an Apprenticeship or other type of paid employment in your chosen career area.

You will spend most of your Traineeship with an employer whilst learning in the workplace, you may also spend some time working towards vocational or employability qualifications. You can also improve your maths and English.

• a traineeship can help you to build up your confidence and give an employer the chance to get to know you before taking you on, without the pressure of a formal recruitment interview.

• you will build up valuable work experience and have plenty of new things to add to your cv.

• 85% of our trainees gain employment directly as a result of their traineeship.

Where will I train? Your work experience placement will be with a local employer. You may attend your local Training Centre to undertake any qualifications you have chosen, we have lots of local Training Centres so you won’t have to travel far.

When can I start and how long will it last? You can start with us at any time - we don’t have set start dates, your Traineeship will last any time between six weeks and six months. What will I earn? Traineeships are unwaged but you can apply for a Bursary (of up to £40 per week) and will get help towards the cost of your lunches and travel. If you aren’t eligible for a Bursary you can also apply for a Learning Grant. Get in touch for more details.

We will work with you to help you secure paid employment as soon as possible.

Who can apply? You have to be aged between 16 and 24 years old and want to succeed.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t have any qualifications, or didn’t get the grades you expected at school, your Traineeship will be designed around you and where you want to be in the future.

Skills Solutions has received the highest quality standard for its range of work experience placements and traineeships, which benefit more than 1,000 young people a year. This award comes on top of Skills Solutions already featuring as an Ofsted good practice case study for the provision of work experience.

Luke Warburton from Salford, a Study Programme success story who benefited from a quality work experience placement, received the Fair Train Gold Standard award on behalf of Skills Solutions. Luke has been shortlisted for the Rising Star award in the Greater Manchester Skills for Business awards 2014, following his successful placement at Travis Perkins. Luke’s supervisor at Travis Perkins says he’s come on leaps and bounds during his work experience, and he is now a valued member of the team.

Fair Train is the Group Training Association for the voluntary sector who work with employers and training providers to encourage organisations to offer work based learning opportunities, from work experience to Apprenticeships. The Gold Standard is a nationally-

recognised quality benchmark, the highest quality award for work experience and demonstrates exemplary performance in employment practices, including commitment to the progression of learners and supportive supervision throughout the work experience. Commenting on the award, Alan Benvie, Director of Study Programmes at Skills Solutions said:

“Work experience is one of the cornerstones of our work in helping young people gain employment. A huge amount of work goes into providing meaningful work experience placements for our young people and we know it is worth it. I would like to congratulate staff from our Training Centres who put so much effort into working with employers to identify suitable opportunities, and supporting young people throughout the process.”
