ARBORETUM GUIDE SPOTLIGHTCottonwood Populus deltoidesThe cottonwood is a huge fast growing tree that can reach 100 feet tall and several feet in diameter. The tree lives its life in 30-60 years. Alamo is the Spanish word for the cottonwood tree; early pioneers used the trees to find water and as landmarks across the west. The state champion resides in Bandera County 80 feet tall and 372 inches in circumference. The leaves quake and rattle in the breeze sounding like rain. The seeds are attached to a tuff of “cotton” that allows them to be carried by the wind. Fall foliage is a clear yellow. The trees are easy to propagate and are short lived, very useful in the paper pulp industry. It is a host plant for several butterfly species: eastern tiger swallowtail, viceroy, mourning cloak, and red spotted admiral. Native Americans often use a hollow cottonwood tree to make drums.

An arboretum is a place for the study, display and preservation of trees. Thanks to the foresight and devotion of members of the Guada Coma Garden Club, Landa Park was designated as an arboretum in 1982. In 2007, the arboretum was named after William and Dolores Schumann, in honor of their endless devotion to this botanical jewel.

PICK UP YOUR GUIDE: The Arboretum Guide is available for purchase at the Parks Administration Office. The printed guide is $5. The guide and map are also available, free of charge, on the Parks and Recreation website www.nbtexas.org/ARBORETUM

SCHEDULE A GUIDED TOUR:Schedule your next group guided tour (minimum group size 8) with Kelly Eby, the City’s Urban Forester. Contact Sam at [email protected] or 830-221-4367.
