2016 SUMMER SESSIONSPRE-K PROGRAMS (Birth to 5)

PARENT/CHILD SWIM LESSONSParent/Child Swim Lessons (Ages 6 months to 3 years)Our parent/child swim lessons promote water enrichment and aquatic-readiness activities for children and their parents or other trusted adults.In this program, the developmental experiences of each child are usedto build the child's self-confidence in and out of the water. Parents learnfrom the instructor's example how to guide their children through positivereinforcement and appropriate praise.

There are four levels based on developmental abilities:

• Shrimp (6-8 months) Child can control their head and sit with supportfrom the hands.

• Kipper (9-12 months) Child can sit without hand support and stand withsupport from the hands.

• Inia (13-18 months) Child can stand without support and walk with orwithout support or aid.

• Perch (19-36 months) Child can run and jump Instructors are certified inthe YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Program.

WHERE CHILDREN LEARN,GROW AND THRIVE.At the Y, we regard each child as a uniqueindividual who needs to be understood, guided,encouraged and appreciated. At this early age,play is a child's most important form of learningand development. We provide programs andactivities where children learn, explore, developathletic skills, build a positive self-image anddevelop social relationships with other children.

Level 4: Perch (24-36 months) Parents are taught how to workwith their child to feel more comfortable in the water and to develop basicwater safety and swim skills. Each child should always be accompanied byone parent.

Pike With Parent Children are taught basic skills that are the buildingblocks of swimming, including water propulsion, floating, body awarenessand independence. They are also taught general aquatic safety andpool games. Children will be taught with and without the use of variousinstructional flotation devices (IFDs). Classes maybe combined based onenrollment. Is your child just not ready to be alone for swim lessons? This isa transitional class where we wean your child away from Mom and Dad. Yourchild must be at least 3 years old at the start of the session. The next levelfrom here would be Pike.

Level 1: Pike (Ages 3-5) The first level is for beginning swimmers.Swimmers should be able to listen to instructions and follow directions.Swimmers will learn the basic paddle stroke on the front, back and sides.They will also learn kicking skills and grow comfortable with putting theirface in the water.

Level 2: Eel (Ages 3-5) Swimmers will learn to jump into the water withoutassistance and float on their front and back for 20 seconds with or withoutan IFD. Swimmers will also learn to paddle on front, back and sides for 25yards with an IFD and 15 feet without.

Level 3: Ray (Ages 3-5) Swimmers will learn to front and back float for 30seconds without an IFD; front alternating paddle with rhythmic breathingfor 25 yards with an IFD, and for 20 feet without. Swimmers will also learnfront symmetrical paddle with rhythmic breathing for 25 yards with an IFD,and for 20 feet without; do a side alternating paddle for 25 yards with anIFD and for 20 feet without; back alternating paddle for 25 yards with anIFD and for 20 feet without; and back symmetrical paddle for 25 yards withan IFD and for 20 feet without. Prerequisites: To enter this level, swimmersshould be able to jump in the water without assistance and float on theirfront and back for 20 seconds with or without an IFD. Swimmers should alsobe able to paddle on front, back and sides for 25 yards with an IFD and for15 feet without.

Level 4: Starfish (Ages 3-5) In this class swimmers will learn to do astanding dive, basic front crawl with rotary breathing for 25 yards, basicbreaststroke for 25 yards, backstroke for 25 yards, elementary backstrokefor 25 yards, basic sidestroke for 25 yards and tread water for 1 minute.Prerequisites: To enter this level, swimmers should be able to front and backfloat for 30 seconds without an IFD, front alternating paddle with rhythmicbreathing for 25 yards with an IFD and for 20 feet without. Swimmers alsoneed to be able to front symmetrical paddle with rhythmic breathing for 25yards with an IFD and for 20 feet without, do a side alternating paddle for25 yards with an IFD and for 20 feet without, back alternating paddle for25 yards with an IFD and for 20 feet without, and back symmetrical paddlefor 25 yards with an IFD and for 20 feet without.

Semi-Private and Private Swim Lessons Student-to-instructor ratiois 1:1 or 2:1 for semi-private lessons. Skills learned are based upon theprogressive swim lesson program. Program is 5 or 10 weeks. Classes are 30minutes. Participants may register for this class more than once.

PRESCHOOL/EARLY LEARNINGPreschool is an exciting time as children embark on new adventures in theworld of learning. At the Y, we regard each child as a unique individual whoneeds to be understood, guided, encouraged and appreciated. Our programsprovide activities where children learn, explore, build a positive self-image and develop strong social and emotional relationships. Y programsencourage children to explore their creativity through multi-sensoryexperiences and create a language-rich environment to promote and fostera love of reading. Children are exposed to art, music, math and science asthey develop expressive and receptive language and gross motor skills.

DANCEDoes your little one love to move to the groove? Then a Y preschool danceclass is just for them. Whether your child is a living room leaper, bedroomballerina or backyard hip-hopper, our introductory dance classes exposeyour children to different techniques and ways to stay active, all whilehaving fun expressing themselves through creative movement.

Level 1: Polliwog This is the beginning level for school age children and isappropriate for anyone new to the water or with little formal instruction.Children will learn kicking skills, the basic paddle stroke on their front, backand sides, and will become comfortable putting their face in the water.

Level 2: Guppy In the Guppy class, swimmers will learn to front andback float for 1 minute; front alternating paddle 25 yards with rhythmicbreathing, with and without an IFD; front symmetrical paddle 25 yards;back symmetrical paddle 25 yards; back alternating paddle 25 yards; sidealternating paddle 25 yards; and kneeling dive. Prerequisites: To enter thislevel, children should be able to front and back float for 30 seconds with orwithout an IFD; paddle 25 yards on their front, back and side with an IFDand 15 feet without an IFD; jump in without assistance; and be comfortablein deep water.

Level 3: Minnow In the Minnow class, swimmers will learn to do a standingdive; basic front crawl rotary breathing 25 yards; basic breaststroke25 yards; backstroke 25 yards; elementary backstroke 25 yards; basicsidestroke 25 yards; and tread water for 1 minute. Prerequisites: To enterthis level, children should be able to front and back float for 1 minute; frontalternating paddle 25 yards with rhythmic breathing, with and without anIFD; front symmetrical paddle 25 yards; back symmetrical paddle 25 yards;back alternating paddle 25 yards; side alternating paddle 25 yards; andkneeling dive.

Semi-Private and Private Swim Lessons: Student-to-instructor ratiois 1:1 or 2:1 for semi-private lessons. Skills learned are based upon theprogressive swim lesson program. Program is 5 or 10 weeks. Classes are 30minutes. Participants may register for this class more than once.

Kyuki-Do Martial Arts Kyuki-Do is a Korean martial art that primarilyincorporates elements of Taekwondo, Hapkido and Judo. Students willlearn self-defense, develop better hand-eye coordination and grow in self-discipline. All-ages and family classes are available to bring all ages togetherin this ancient martial art. The advanced section is meant for all studentswho are green stripe or above, or receive approval of the instructor.

Dodgeball Club Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive and Dodge your way to fun everyFriday evening with our Dodgeball Club! Teams will be formed each week anda variety of different dodgeball games will be played.

Sports of All Sorts Is your child always playing sports around the house?Let's get them in the gym early and play some sports during Sports of AllSorts! This is a fun class where the kids are introduced to a different sporteach week. Your child will learn the basic skills of an individual sport andthen play a variety of mini-games related to each sport.

Archery Learn the art of archery! This introductory program will teachyou proper body positioning, safety, arm turn and control, proper draw,increased distance and archery scoring. Archery at the Sage Y is a can't-miss opportunity!

Tennis Score an ace with tennis at the Y! This program is designed to helpyour youngster discover the joy of tennis. This introductory class will keepyour youngster fit and introduces them to a lifelong sport. Kids will learnthe fundamentals of tennis while having a blast!

Kids Marathon The Sage YMCA Kids Marathon is a summer-long fitnessprogram for kids ages 5-13. Walk or run 1 mile on your own with adultsupervision 25 times over the summer. Record your mileage in our mileagelog sheets. Then, on Race Day, come pick up your race bib and race shirt,and run your final 1.2 miles with all of the other participants. Every kid whofinishes the 1.2 mile run will receive a finisher ribbon. Open to members andnon-members. Space is limited to 150 participants.

• A family friendly, fun activity for kids between the ages of 5 and 13.• A way for kids to get fit, achieve a goal and learn how much fun running can be.• A summer of running that builds up to the celebratory final 1.2 mile run on August

Sunrise Outdoor Yoga Clinic Being outdoors gives you access to a wholenew world of sensations. It helps you feel part of a boundless existence, atone with an intelligent and sympathetic universe. The pure unpredictabilityof being outside and exposed to the elements can strengthen an existingpractice or inspire a new one. This class will combine elements of traditionalhatha and vinyasa flow yoga. Join us for an intermediate-level yoga class,outdoors! Ages 12+.

Yoga for Athletes - Outdoors No matter the sport you're involved in,this class will help improve your performance and can help take you to thenext level in your athletic career. Yoga for Athletes helps improve flexibilityand coordination by putting your body through a series of highly effectivestrengthening and stretching exercises that are key to the demands of anelite athlete. Class will be held outdoors, weather permitting.

Chakra Yoga Stimulate your 7 energy centers or chakras with this mind-and-body yoga class. This class will take you through a series of traditionalposes while being cued to focus inward on each chakra. Eventually eachparticipant will have the ability to completely link his or her mind withthe body, providing complete control and relaxation through day-to-daysituations. This class will be held outdoors, weather permitting.

Tabata Cardio - Outdoors It's been called the world's greatestfat-burning workout, a high-intensity interval training which utilizes 8exercises, all done in 4-minute intervals. Tabata Cardio can be used forweight loss as well as improving overall fitness. Modifications can be madefor all fitness levels. Tabata Cardio for Summer 2016 will be held outdoors,weather permitting.

TRX Suspension Training Take your performance to the next level bydeveloping your strength utilizing functional movements and dynamicpositions that challenge your back, shoulders, chest, hips and legs. TRX issuspension training that delivers a total-body workout and offers a wholerange of movements focusing on abs. This class is suitable for all fitnesslevels and no experience is necessary.

Barre Burn Based on a fusion of Pilates and classic Barre techniques, thisresults-driven class incorporates the perfect blend of deep-muscle toningwith resistance, the grace of ballet, the flexibility of yoga and the corestrengthening of Pilates. This class is suitable for all fitness levels and noexperience is necessary.

Weight Lifting for Women Set yourself up for success with a weight liftingfor women class! With the guidance and supervision of a personal trainer,you will learn proper form, strength training techniques and the importanceof strength training. Become comfortable in the weight room and learn howto use the equipment safely. Class space is limited to 8 participants. Bestrong, be bold, be you!

American Muscle Get your workout on before the fireworks and barbecuesthis 4th of July. Join one of our Independence Day workouts! Adult 3-on-3 Basketball League An outdoor 3-on-3 basketball league.7-game regular season, June 9 - July 21, with a single-elimination playofftournament July 28; tournament seeding determined by regular seasonteam record. All games will be played on Thursday evenings starting at 6:30p.m. Games will be officiated in a league-play, 3-on-3 format. Teams mustsubmit a completed team roster form at time of registration. FLUID RUNNINGFluid Running is a deep water running class that provides all the benefits ofrunning on land and more without any impact. The benefits include burningup to 40% more calories than running on land. Builds muscular strength andendurance by working legs, core and arms. There is zero impact, so runnerscan participate even with many injuries. You don't have to be a runner or anathlete to participate. Floatation belts are provided.

Adult Beginner You've always wanted to learn how to swim. Now is thetime to learn. This level focuses on the beginning swimmer with no or verylimited swimming ability. During this class, swimmers will be taught how topropel themselves in the water with little to no assistance on their front andback. We will work on the fundamentals of breathing and body position.

Adult Intermediate This is for swimmers age 16+ who are comfortablein the water and know the fundamentals of swimming (breathing, kicking,floating). Swimmers should be able to swim one length of the lap pool andtread water for 1 min. The class will focus on strengthening the front crawland back crawl, with additional work on sidestroke and breaststroke (lappool). This class is great for those looking to do a triathlon or join Mastersbut are need of a little extra guidance.

Private Swim Lessons Student-to-instructor ratio is 1:1. Skills learnedare based upon the progressive swim lesson program. Program is5 weeks. Classes are 30 minutes. Participants may register for this classmore than once.

Masters Swim Team This group helps to bridge the gap between endingswim lessons and the introduction to more competitive swimming for adults.

LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATIONInterested in a great summer job or a challenging career as a professionallifeguard? Through videos, group discussion and hands-on practice, you'lllearn teamwork, rescue and surveillance skills, First Aid and CPR/AED, andother skills you need to work as a professional lifeguard.

Red Cross Lifeguard TrainingLearn the skills and knowledge required to become a lifeguard, including howto recognize, prevent and respond quickly to aquatic emergencies. Participants will receive certifications after attending all class sessions,passing all written exams, water skills and tests. Lifeguard and first aidcertifications, CPR-Pro, AED and Oxygen Administration certifications are allvalid for two years. See pool prerequisites for this class below.

Red Cross Lifeguard RecertificationThe American Red Cross Lifeguard Recertification course will be offeredto anyone who has a current Red Cross Lifeguarding certification. Proof ofcurrent certification is required to participate. If a participant passes theaquatic portion of the recertification (including the prerequisite skills), he/she will then be given the opportunity to complete the classroom portionand written test of the program. The written test must be passed with atleast 80% accuracy. See pool prerequisites for this class below. Prerequisitesfor Red Cross Lifeguard Classes: Participants must be age 15 or olderby the first day of the class, and be able to complete all prerequisites: swim300 yards using front crawl with rhythmic breathing and also use the breaststroke without stopping, along with a timed, 20-yard swim using eitherstroke, perform a surface dive and retrieve a 10-pound brick in 10 feet ofwater and then return the brick 20 yards, and tread water for 2 minuteswith hands out of the water. Students unable to pass the prerequisites atthe start of the class will not be able to finish the class.
