This camp is designed for the student who would like to be primed for reading instruction or who is looking to build oral language and rhyming skills. It is also designed to ready the reader for the next step in reading comprehension: blending. Improvement in these skills, along with recognizing and naming the letters of the alphabet and understanding the sound/symbol relationship of each, will be main goals of the camp.

• JUMP INTO MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH •Math sessions for JumpStart have been divided by skill level and approximate grade level for concept introduction and mastery. Any questions regarding student placement should be directed to the stu-dent’s grade-level math teacher.

.........................................................................................................................

Just the Facts• July 24–28 • 9:00–10:25 a.m. • Grade: 5• Instructors: St. Francis Middle School faculty • Cost: $175

This course is aimed at helping rising fifth graders who need to solid-ify their knowledge of basic math facts and operations. Fundamental number sense will be emphasized as students aim to improve their speed and accuracy in working with math facts and applying them to word problems and problem-solving strategies.

.........................................................................................................................

Fractions, Decimals, and Division• July 31–August 4 • 10:35 a.m.–12:00 p.m. • Grades: 5 and 6• Instructors: St. Francis Middle School faculty • Cost: $175

Before students begin algebraic processes, they need to truly under-stand and be comfortable working with fractions and decimals—and comprehend what they represent. Students will also work with divi-sion, as fractions also suggest the operation of division. Mastery of these skills is key before entering pre-algebra.

.........................................................................................................................

Number Sense• July 17–21 • 9:00–11:00 a.m. • Grades: 5–7• Instructors: St. Francis Middle School faculty • Cost: $175

Before students can effectively manipulate numbers and solve equa-tions, they need to have a basic understanding of how numbers work and how functions really affect them. In this class, students will gain a deeper understanding of doubling, halving, estimating, and grouping. They will also learn to determine whether, after solving a problem, their answer makes sense. Applying number sense to future mathematical learning will be the key to deeper understanding.

.........................................................................................................................

All About Integers• Session I: July 24–28 • 9:00–10:25 a.m. • Session II: July 31–August 4 • 10:35 a.m.–12:00 p.m. • Grades: 6 and 7• Instructors: St. Francis Middle School faculty • Cost: $175 per session

This course helps students understand integers versus non-integers, and how integers can and cannot be used. This knowledge is key to helping students grasp pre-algebraic concepts and understand how to solve simple equations.

.........................................................................................................................

Combining Like Terms and Integer Operations• Session I: July 24–28 • 10:35 a.m.–12:00 p.m. • Session II: July 31–August 4 • 9:00–10:25 a.m. • Grades: 7 and 8• Instructors: St. Francis Middle School faculty • Cost: $175 per session

Students in this session will practice combining like terms, in the process becoming more comfortable with variables and exponents and how simple expressions can be simplified and combined. Understanding that 2x is not the same as x2 lays the foundation for recognizing expressions and how operations can be applied to them. Through individual and group activities, students will gain a stronger understanding of these underlying concepts—and a leg up in alge-bra classes.
