YMCA CAMP INFORMATION

CHARACTER MATTERS AT Y SUMMER CAMP! At summer camp your camper will learn:• CARING - putting others first • HONESTY - keeping their promises • RESPECT - being courteous and polite• RESPONSIBILITY - be accountable for

your choices.

Use this camp catalog as your one-stop source for planning and scheduling safe and fun summer days with the YMCA for your children. The Y offers a large selection of camp experiences for boys and girls ages 3-16.

If you have any questions as you read this catalog, please contact our branch at 630.551.0797 or visit our website at www.oswegofamilyymca.org. We look forward to serving your family this summer at Y Summer Camp.

STAFF Camp counselors are mature, caring, energetic individuals who have a genuine love for children. 80% of our camp staff are age 18 and older. All employees are carefully selected and trained in YMCA camp leadership, CPR, first aid, and YMCA child-abuse prevention. Supervision and leadership are provided by the Oswego Family YMCA Program Directors

Many of our camp staff are experienced, returning staff who are working toward, degrees in education, or are teachers working during their summer break. Numerous staff work during the school year in our YMCA and are familiar faces to the children. All employee applicants go through an extensive background check prior to hire.

ACA ACCREDITATION Oswego Family YMCA summer camps are ACA accredited! The Oswego Family YMCA is proud to partner with the American Camping Association to offer your children the safest experience possible. Achieving ACA accreditation is very significant as our camps and staff are continually evaluated and reviewed on over 300 standards for health, safety and program quality.

SAFETY IS OUR FIRST PRIORITY The Oswego Family YMCA is pleased to work with Praesidium, Inc., a national abuse risk-management firm, to ensure the safety of your children. As a key element of our child-abuse prevention efforts, Praesidium has evaluated our hiring policies and guides and trains our staff to help us provide the safest possible environment for your children. Praesidium also provides us with information to share with you, so that you are aware of issues that affect your children's safety.

YMCA VALUE FOR YOUR FAMILY Parent Comments from last summer• We loved the camp counselors! They were mostly

in their 20's and teachers or education majors in college. They all genuinely like kids!

• Great field trips throughout the summer and very caring counselors!

• No TV! And lots of great activities and games that were age appropriate!

• My kids loved summer camp! They never wanted to leave when I came to pick them up!

• Great price and flexibility of hours!

PARENT HANDBOOKS An informational Parent Handbook packet will be distributed to parents at the time of registration. If you register online, please download the Parent Handbook at www.oswegofamliyymca.org or stop by the YMCA to pick one up. It will contain details of your child's specific camp, such as field trip information, weekly themes, attire and additional parent responsibilities. We will also be distributing and going over the Parent Handbook at the Parent Orientation meeting.

FEE ASSISTANCE The Oswego YMCA does our best to keep Summer Camp cost reasonable, and is proud of its heritage and commitment to make its character-building, family-enriching programs available to everyone in our community. Fees are based on the cost of providing a safe and fun summer day camp experience. Due to the limited scholarship resources available, we first refer interested families to the Dept. of Human Services to apply for funding. We must have approval letter in hand in order to honor the discount. Any co-payments are the responsibility of the parents, and must be received prior to the week registered for camp.

If after you qualify for DHS funding and still need further assistance, we encourage you to apply for fee assistance here at the Oswego YMCA. Annually, we receive support from hundreds of members, community leaders and businesses who believe in our purpose. They contribute generously to our You are Y Campaign, investing in youth and families. These funds are distributed on a sliding needs scale to families with a documented financial need in our communities.

Subject to available YMCA resources and program space, no person will be denied participation because of an inability to pay. Drop by any Chicago Metro YMCA branch for an application, or visit us at www.oswegofamilyymca.org to download the application.

YOU ARE Y CAMPAIGN Each year many families receive fee assistance for membership and programs thanks to our You are Y Campaign. Our YMCA is committed to instilling values in kids and families regardless of their financial circumstances. To learn more or to sponsor a child at camp, go online to www.oswegofamilyymca.org.

COUNSELOR IN TRAINING Love Camp? Interested in becoming a Y Camp Counselor some day? Then CIT is for you! Counselor In Training is a program for teens too old to be a camper, but too young to be a counselor. This program is best for those who have been a YMCA camper for at least one summer.

Counselor In Training is an interactive learning environment that provides an "insider" view into how camp runs and the responsibilities of the counselors who run it. CIT's will be instructed on much of the same material covered in our counselor staff trainings, and will be mentored by a Unit Leader in camp, helping them with programming, lessons and day to day activities. This is a great opportunitiy to develop leadership skills, build self-esteem and prepare for a future opportunity as a day camp counselor. Candidates interested in joining our CIT program must submit an application with references, and proceed through an interview with the Program Director and Site Coordinator.

CIT's application packets will be available beginning March 1st. Please contact Mitch Bunkofske at [email protected] for more information.
