Summer Reading Activities

Did you know that reading four or more

books in the summer can help children

maintain their current reading level?

Choose a special time each day to read

with your child for at least 20 minutes.


Have your child practice reading skills this

summer by reading! Visit your local public library

and ask for a list of recommended books to read.

Start reading!


As your child reads during the summer,

create a graph of the different types of

books (genres) read.

Example: fiction, fantasy, historical fiction,

biography, mystery, animals, folktales,

science fiction, humor.


Reading Race

Have your child practice fluency skills by

timing your child for one minute as he/she

reads a familiar passage. Repeat and see

if he/she can complete the passage faster.

Or, have your child slow down and read

for expression.


• Create a reading time with your family.

Have each family member take turns

reading.


Book Club

Help your child create a book club with

friends. Children can choose a book to

read and meet once a week to discuss:

• Favorite parts of the book

• A special chapter summary

• A review of the major parts of the book


Turn off the iTunes and TV and

READ READ READ!


Have your child design a bookmark to use

during summer reading.


Have your child keep a review of books

read during the summer on index cards.

Have your child share these cards when

school starts in August.


Have your child watch a favorite TV show

and write a note to retell parts of the

show: beginning, middle, and end.

“It’s in the Funnies”

Have your child collect comic strips from the

newspaper. Clip them together and read!

Have your child make up new comic strips.


List Makers!

Have your child make lots of lists: favorite

toys, favorite movies, favorite books,

favorite animals, favorite pets, favorite

foods, favorite teachers, favorite places to

visit, favorite friends.



Have your child cut out pictures from

newspapers or magazines. Have your

child write with a friend and write some

captions for the pictures.


Have your child dress up as a character in a

book and act out parts of the story for

family and friends.

Game Time

Have your child play a board game. Have

your child read the directions aloud to you

before playing the game.


Chalk Talk

Have your child practice reading skills this

summer by reading and retelling! Have

your child read a book and illustrate the

text by using chalk on a sidewalk.


Be reading buddies with your child. Have

family members take turns reading aloud

each night before bed.


Build a reading tent with chairs and

blankets. Have your child grab a book and

read inside.


Have your child practice writing skills by

sending postcards, letters, or notes to

relatives!



Have your child keep a journal to record

the daily weather report during the

summer.

Build an indoor beach with your child. Get

a towel, a glass of lemonade, and a book.

Have your child read while relaxing on

your beach!


Have your child use sidewalk chalk and

write as many words as possible in 3

minutes.


Reading 15 minutes a day makes everyone

a better reader.

During a summer month set a goal of family

reading at least 15 minutes every day.

Eat and Chat

Allow books at the table and have your child

share parts of the text while munching!

Make sure there are no crumbs left on the

book!

Make a scrapbook with your child using

pictures and/or drawings. Have your child

Plan a party with your child. Have your child

make a guest list and write invitations.


Reflection Time

Have your child keep a journal of favorite

things he/she does during the summer.


Be an Illustrator!

Read aloud to your child but don’t share any

pictures. Have your child draw to illustrate

the portion of the book you shared.


Help your child make a book cover for a

book he/she has read. The following site

Have a book swap with neighbors!

Have your child and a friend collect “gently

used” books from home and switch books!
