I don’t remember a more exciting time to be in the cow/calf business than right now. It doesn’t matter who you talk to, or what you hear or read, prices are at an all time high and the future looks even better. For over 30 years, our cow herd has focused on producing bulls that work for our customers. Many things have changed over those 30+ years, but many have stayed the same. Our ability to find the cream of the crop has been fine tuned over the years, however we still stay focused on our three basic principles of providing genetics. My dad, Maurice, was very instrumental in getting us on the right path many years ago and his advice still holds true today. He stressed that for our business to work for our customers we had to have these three principles. 1. We provide a product our customer not only wants, but needs to be successful. 2. Our genetics are dependable, consistent and predictable without any surprises. 3. Most importantly, stand behind our genetics 100% and make every decision based upon the profit of our customers. To this day we still operate under these three rules. We have bred our cows to calve easy, grow fast and produce a carcass that is wanted by the consumer. We feel as we are on the right track and our genetic trends on page 5 reflect our goals very well. We have improved our calving ease while increasing post weaning gain. Both represent the direction we push our genetics. The API and TI charts also show our direction in genetic improvement made in these traits along with the improved carcass traits.Family has always been an important part of our ranch and it continues today. Jake returned home after graduating from Kansas State and Virginia Tech. He works with the cow herd and probably most noticeable is his work with our advertising, web site and catalog production. Ben will graduate from Kansas State this spring and is planning to return home with his focus on the reproduction side of the cow herd. Needless to say, the help is welcome. Becky is employed in Topeka and helps out when she can. Joe is a freshman at Fort Scott Community College and Sam is a freshman in high school. Genetics that come easy, grow, and fit about any situation

EPDs are a good indicator of the differences in a group of bulls or heifers. As such, they are a valuable tool to use in the buying process. Before you can turn to the EPDs, a look in the mirror can prove advantagous. Ask yourself a few questions.

1. What kind of cowherd do I have? 2. How do I market my calves? 3. Do I keep replacement heifers? 4. What are my feed and labor resources? 5. Where do I want to take this cowherd/business?

Your situation is unique in many ways and by no means are these the only questions you may ask. Use the data to help find the bulls that fit into your program. If you desire, we can help in your decision making process.

Using EPDs and selection indexes in your decision making process can be very confusing or very simple. The sheer number of available tools can be daunting that is one reason

for using selection indexes. However, the way indexes are calculated is a confusing process that involves settling on a desired goal and backtracking to find the economically relevant traits to achieve that goal and weighting them based on significance. Therefore, if a bull is extremely superior for a certain trait and lacking in another, the superior trait may cancel out the inferior trait. Who’s to say that negative trait isn’t the most important one when your herd is the sub-ject. Therefore, while indexes can make things much easier, caution should be used because sometimes 1 number just doesn’t tell the whole story. At Sunflower Genetics we are focused on the value of selection indexes because of the eco-nomic affect they can have and the simplicity of their final nature. At the same time we try to keep an eye on the big picture to make sure all the important numbers are in line with what we deem acceptable.

Heterosis | It’s Like A Free Lunch

What is Heterosis?Heterosis can be defined as increase in such characteristics as size, growth rate, fertility, and yield of a hybrid organ-ism over those of its parents. Plant and animal breeders exploit heterosis by mating two different purebred lines that have desirable traits. The first-generation offspring generally show, in greater measure, the desired characteristics of both parents.

Why Simmental and Angus?To maximize heterosis, breeds need to be genetically different. Therefore a continental and british breed are a good place to start. One advantage is that both breeds have potentail to be homozygous black, enabling offspring to capitilize on a color driven cattle market. Also, why not combine two of the industries most powerful breeds. Supporting evidence can be found in the table below.

Creating Maximum HeterosisThe first step to achieving a goal is to know what the goal is

and then to gain knowledge of how to get there. Across the page is a definition of heterosis. As it relates to

creating maximum heterosis, two different purebred lines need to be used. The more different the

breeds the more heterosis is gained. The result is an animal with the most heterozygous genes

as possible. However, the challenge is to maximize heterosis while not sacraficing

consistancy, color and polled status. This is were our 25 years of experience comes in and what we feel can be described as the “Perfect Blend of Genetics Designed for Profit$.”

In a setting where some cows need a calving ease bull while others need a shot of growth a SimAngus bull brings a balanced package with the bonus of heterosis. Another scenerio where we feel a SimAngus bull earns his keep is in smaller operations. Here again the need for a heifer bull limits the potential pounds weaned by mature cows. Why buy 2 bulls when you only need one? For best results use purebred bulls on the opposite breed cows. The blend of brisith and continental cattle is one you will be happy with.

Not sure where to start other than A337 is the complete pack-age. He excelled in almost every trait. Starting off with a 78# birth weight, he went on to post an impressive 749# adjusted weaning weight with a 120 ratio. Followed that up with an equally impressive 1380# adjusted yearling weight with a 116 ratio. Maybe his most outstanding stat is his 21 inch rib-eye area measurement! I gaurantee you’ll drive a lot of miles and study a stack of catalogs to find a bull that can match his performance. His EPD profile puts him well above average in all traits and of course he shines on the growth traits and is in the top 1% in REA. His API and TI are also at the top of the breed. Phenotypically he is also a standout. If you study his pedigree on the cow side, you will also find an equally impressive cow. His dam has raised 7 calves with a 365 day calving interval that have ratioed on average of 110 at birth, yes that is an average of 10% lighter at birth! Those 7 calves averaged 75# at birth but yet weaned off with an aver-age ratio of 105 and went on to average 107 at yearling. Start them small and grow them big is how we want our calves and 410 does it as good as any cow in the herd. The big rib-eye is also no surprise as her calves average 117 on this trait. Genetically they don’t get any better than her. A Sitz Alliance daughter who exemplifies his ability to sire cows who simply work hard for a living. Her dam was sired by Emulation 5522, who many know as the sire of EXT, the mainstay sire of cows in the entire Angus breed. 5522 daughters are known for their fleshing ability and great udder quality. Deeper down in the pedigree is 9J9 and New Trend. Not sure you could make a more maternal, cow making pedigree on any Angus cow. Undoubtably, the most intriguing SimAngus bull we have ever raised and is a serious herd sire candidate for the most discriminating breeder.

Most years A347 would have easily been our Lot 1 bull but it was a pretty tough position to attain this year. Light birth weight, top end performance in a very attractive package. Admired by everyone who has seen him, he is a super thick ended bull with added rib and shape. Great performance from end to end. His dam raises a good one every year.

SimAngus bull with calving ease and performance. Sired by Rito 6EM3 and out of a 1st calf heifer this bull is a very complete package. Light birth weight followed with great performance as he ratioed 114 at weaning and 111 at yearling. Very impressive for a bull whose calving ease EPD is in the top 5% of the entire breed but yet his weaning and yearling EPD is in the top 10% and 15% respectfully. His birth weight spread from -1.8 to a yearling EPD of 112 is almost unheard of in the breed. A320’s dam is sired by a bull we raised that was a great calving ease sire with added growth. The Opportunity bull worked very well and left an outstand-ing set of daughters. Y97 did a great job for her 1st calf and we look for great things to come for this really good young cow. In turn, his grand dam is a former show heifer that was shown very successfully. Maybe not quite as successful as her dam, who Jake showed to Reserve Grand Champion Percentage heifer at the South Central Regional Junior Simmental show. She also won several shows and was rarely beat in class no matter where she was shown. A320 is built very similarly to his sire in terms of moderation of frame with add-ed depth, spring of rib and fleshing ability. All traits some of our Simmental cattle need in today’s environment. He has the look of calving ease with a clean made front end, smooth shoulders and clean bone. But don’t be fooled into thinking he doesn’t have enough power. He ratioed 102 on REA and is in the top 20% for that trait. There’s a chance A320 should have been our Lot 1 bull as he definitely has the performance and pedigree to be a solid candidate for those wanting calving ease and added performance from a solid cow family.

We used the Hoosier bull as an outcross for our Purebred Simmental cows and did it ever work. Matter fact his calves averaged 106 weaning and 107 yearling ratios, respectfully. Even the calving ease was outstanding. We used him some on heifers and they all calved un-assisted and the calf vigor was super good. Even though A340 was a twin his perfor-mance is outstanding and he himself is an impressive bull to admire. Thick made with added stifle and hip this Hoosier son is cleaner fronted and straighter lined with more eye appeal. Being homozygous black adds to his appeal.
