Irving is an excellent businessman andinvestor. Thirty years ago he bought a pieceof property in the middle of the state, a yearlater Disney bought property a mile down theroad to start Disneyworld. Just one of manybusiness deals that fell his way.

However, as good as he was inbusiness, his luck with womenwasn’t. Things happened in theweirdest way. His last adventurewould be a good example.

He met Louise through his goodfriend Walter. Walter’s wife Selmahad let it be known quietly that shewould love get to really know himin the carnal way even thoughWalter was his good friend. Hewas always uncomfortable around her but hedid meet Louise at their home. He tookLouise out a few times and absolutelyenjoyed her. Then it happened. Walter sug-gested that the four of them go out to a showthat was in town. They had dinner and Irvingspent half the dinner removing Selma’s handfrom under the table. They went to the show

and suddenly he felt Selma’s hand travellingup one leg while the other leg felt Louise’shand coming up the other leg. Fortunatelythe two didn’t meet. When they left the showIrving went off with Louise and spent theentire evening and early morning really dis-covering each other. When he left that morn-ing to go to his home he was so happy that hedecided to call Louise to tell her how happy

she had made him. He called herand as soon as she picked up thephone he told her how wonderfulthe evening had been. Before shecould answer, he hung up feelingthat was a perfect way to let herknow how he felt.

That night when he came home, there was George’s wife Selma wait-ing outside his home, “Irving,” shesaid, “your call was so nice that I’ve

decided to leave Walter and move in with you.”Irving realized that he had called the wrongnumber and gotten Selma instead of Louise.

The result, Louise was insulted, his friendGeorge no longer talks to him and Selma keepscalling him. Irving has decided the he’ll staywith what he can do and maybe some dayLouise might talk to him again. Maybe...

Whether you live inSunny Isles Beach oryou’re just visiting, hereare some “Know-vember”reminders you shouldknow about in order toderive maximum enjoy-

ment from all the city’s great services andamenities…

• Knowing not to tune into easy listen-ing radio stations when stuck in traffic dur-ing holiday time is of upmost importancein order not to fall asleep behind thewheel! You may want to consider buyingsome new high-energy CDs or maybe evensome jazzy ones if you loved the recentSunny Isles Beach Jazz Fest featuringSpyro Gyra.

• Knowing not to park in shoppingplazas on the west side of Collins andcross the street to get to the beach will saveyou a lot of time and trouble looking foryour car when you get back – and discov-ering its been towed. It’s also wise to knowthe city frowns upon those who try to jay-walk by hurdling over lush landscaping inthe medians planted to promote the city’scommitment to beautification projects andgreen initiatives.

• Knowing parks in Sunny Isles Beachoffer free Wi-Fi service means now yourFacebook status can always say, “I’m bask-ing in the glory of warm winter weather” –making everyone else freezing in the showwant to delete you from their friends list!

• Knowing you don’t have to cook forThanksgiving and you can order a com-plete takeout feast from the city’s EpicureGourmet Market and Café is really some-thing to be thankful for!

• Knowing the qualifying period for run-ning in the next Sunny Isles Beach Nov. 6general election is August 14-17, 2012may motivate you to consider running fora commission seat in the northern or south-ern districts. But now, according to a char-ter amendment voters approved last May,candidates have to have lived within theparticular residential area they’re seekingto represent continuously for at least oneyear at the time of qualifying.

Prospective candidates should alsoknow that beyond having to reside withinthe district being represented, they’rerequired to remain in the district for theduration of their terms - but are allowed tomove within the same district of the city.Of course, this shouldn’t be a problembecause anyone with a Sunny Isles Beachaddress knows there isn’t anywhere elsethey’d ever want to live!

When a person is driven to distractionthey are almost driven to a state of mad-ness. They feel crazed. They may feel furi-ous, incensed and enraged. They cannotfocus or concentrate. This state is generat-ed by other people and situations. Theycause you to feel negative emotions thatyou do not normally experience.

Most inappropriate irritating behavioris a bid for your attention. It says I ammore important than anything or anyoneelse in your life including yourself. Myneeds and desires supersede yours oreven the reality of the moment. Theirdrama is a way to force you to focus onthem. They attack you and force you todefend yourself. They insinuate that youare inadequate. They accuse you of let-ting them down. They consume you andyour energy with their demands. It is dif-ficult to enforce your boundaries. It is

impossible to assert your rights. It is futile to think that they will ever

respect you and your needs or the needs ofothers. They lack the awareness that othershave any needs. It is hard not to be angrywith them and resent them. But, perhaps, pity is a better response. These individualsare incapable of the basics of human inter-action. They lack the concept of courteousbehavior. They cannot treat others withconsideration. They do not understand thereactions that they create in others.

It is very important that you identify thecause and effect the attention grabbers haveon you and your life. Become aware andalert and notice what is happening aroundyou and to you. You have to establish someboundaries to keep the attention getters fromdistracting you from your own needs. Learnhow to protect your life force, focus andconcentration. Keep them from draining andconsuming your energy. Disengage from thedrama they create. Their dramas will notchange. You must be the one to change anddevelop your skills to respond to these indi-viduals and situations differently.

Many of us are professional web surfers. We know how to find what we need thequickest way possible on the Internet. Othersare less sure of what they are doing and howto access information. On the official SunnyIsles Beach website www.sibfl.net there isan easy system to find answers to your ques-tions about the City.

On the first page that opens, the home pageof the website, there is a grey bar underneaththe picture on the top. On the left of that greybar are several buttons such as Home,Contact, eSIBi and “Ask City Hall”. Click onthe Ask City Hall button and it leads the userto a page divided into 4 sections.

The top left section is FFiinndd AAnnsswweerrss. Here you can search through questions thathave already been asked by others. Typeyour topic into the search box and then readthrough all the answers on the topic. It is notnecessary to sign in to do this.

The other three sections on the pagerequire that the user create an account andsign in. That way the question will be sure tobe answered because the user is connectedby an email to the service on that page.

In the top right section a user can MMaakkee aa

RReeqquueesstt. This will send the question orproblem to the appropriate city department. There are various choices in this section andif a user does not see the correct request thenthey would move on to the third section.

On the lower left of the page is the AAsskk aaQQuueessttiioonn section. This is the spot where auser can type in the question in any form thatthey wish. There again are choices for gener-al categories, for instance, is this a questionfor the police or for building? The box inwhich the question is actually entered isdesigned for a person express their thoughtsor problems in their own words.

The last section on the lower right is sim-ply called MMyy AAsskk CCiittyy HHaallll.. This section isfor the user to keep track of their questionsand requests and the responses they receivefrom the City. It is helpful to track the con-versation if it happens to be a long one.

So in answer to the question, “What is AskCity Hall?” It is a place to find answers toquestions about the City. It is a place to ask aquestion if the answer required is not in theFind Answers section. Whatever question isasked will be answered by the appropriatecity department.

What is Ask City Hall?

Two outstanding historical authors raisedsimilar issues involving the Jews with a devas-tating conclusion - Jews were blamed for theProtestant Revolution. Max I Dimont (TheJews in America) questioned, “How had theJews – who fathered Moses, Isaiah andMaimonides – end up in the ghettos ofEurope?” Worldwide best-selling authorWilliam L. Shirer (The Rise and Fall of theThird Reich) questioned, “It is difficult tounderstand the behavior of most GermanProtestants in the first Nazi years unless one isaware of two things; their history and the influ-ence of Martin Luther, the great founder ofProtestantism.”

According to Dimont, in 1517 withLuther’s “Protest” of Church doctrines, theChurch began to associate “Christian heresywith Jewish influences.” Luther himself“made a bid for Jewish support for his‘Protest’ because he was convinced that his

Protestantism was a return to authenticJudaism.” The Jews remained out of the dis-pute “with catastrophic results.” Luther turnedbitterly against the Jews with a paranoidhatred. The Church also “washed its hands ofthe actions it was about to take. The first stepwas the segregation of the Jews in the ghettos.Within 20 years, the Jews were expelled frommost Papal States. By 1600, Western Europe, which had been the center of European Jewry, was practically empty of Jews, except forthose locked away and forgotten in the ghettosfor over 300 years. To the credit of the Churchand the Protestant hierarchies, neither groupmurdered the defenseless Jews, as did theNazis.”

According to Shirer (who is aProtestant), Luther became, “Both a passion-ate anti-Semite and a ferocious believer inabsolute obedience to political authority. Hewanted Germany rid of the Jews and whenthey were sent away (ghettos), he advised thatthey be deprived of ‘all their cash and jewelsand silver and gold’ and furthermore, that‘their synagogues or schools be set on fire, that their houses be broken up and destroyed…in misery and captivity as they incessantlylament and complain to God about us’ –advice that was literally followed four cen-turies later by Hitler, Goering and Himmler.”

BY CHIEF FRED MAASSunny Isles Beach Police Department

Every Thanksgiving Season for the past sev-eral years, I have written articles for our com-munity newspaper. This year is no exception, but then, yes... it is an exception, because thisyear for me it is an EXCEPTIONAL story. It isabout ONE remarkable human being who repre-sents an entire GROUP of remarkable humanbeings.

By way of Elaine Adler and the AventuraMarketing Council (AMC), Vice Mayor LewThaler of our city, contacted me about a pro-gram to help and to thank some of our WoundedWar Veterans who had returned home from warand might need some well -deserved assistance.

It seems that a contingent of generous, caringand grateful business persons from the DaniaBeach Design District consolidated their effortsto provide some “room makeovers and renova-tions” to the homes of several specially select-ed wounded veterans. Herein begins the story.

I immediately thought of Army VeteranJason Recio. Jason’s life dream was to becomea police officer. However, while in service tohis country and in combat in Iraq, Jason wasseverely wounded as parts of both legs wereblown away, rendering him incapacitated.

Jason returned home to his wife and twochildren. His dream of supporting his family asa police officer was now shattered; or at leastmany would think so. Well, you haven’t met aSOLDIER. You haven’t met Jason Recio.

Fully determined to overcome his injury, overcome his disability and reach his goal,Jason focused on recovery and rehabilitation sothat someday, he would pass the physical examand fitness for duty in order to wear the Badge.

I will not even attempt to describe the story ofhis pain, the suffering, and the setbacks he wentthru on his road to recovery. I would rather tellof the courage, determination, acceptance andhumility this man portrayed during that time. All with his eye on the one goal, one prize.

With the help of support braces for his legs inthe affected muscle areas, Jason proved toeven the most disbelieving that he was able toperform and pass the physical agility testsrequired to become a police officer. AND HEDID!

Today, Officer Jason Recio is a Coral Gablespolice officer, serving in uniform patrol, proud-ly and with dedication and service to his coun-try and now his community, for several years.Jason and his wife are also expecting their thirdchild shortly. They are a FAMILY of GRATI-TUDE and LOVE, to be sure.

So why is this story different from othersabout heroic soldiers? Well, when Jason wascontacted about being selected for this verybenevolent gesture by local businessmen, heasked to speak to me personally. I learned thenthat Jason was very appreciative of the honorand they sure could use the help but he wasreluctant to accept it because there were manyothers who DESERVED it more. Can you sayHUMILITY? Unbelievable, I thought. After

all this man has done, and has been thru and thesacrifices he made and the efforts and strugglesto accomplish his dream.

The fact that his life was changed forever bywar, in defense of his country! And he feels thatothers DESERVE it more? Well, no one whoknows him was surprised by his response. Jasoneven cited examples of other soldiers and militaryhe felt could use the help more. “That’s Jason!”was the constant refrain when I told people of hisreluctance to be honored and recognized.

Fortunately, for all of us, in spite of his reluc-tance and self denial, WE ALL insisted andJason caved in. More for his family than him-self, I am sure. With a new baby on the way, a3rd child, who couldn’t use some help?

Jason Recio, Army Veteran, WoundedWarrior, will be recognized on Saturday,November 5, 2011 for the Tribute to VeteransMilitary Room Makeover Program at the DaniaBeach Design District at Noon, by those whojust wanted to say “Thank You” for what youdo and what you did for our country and for us.

Jason will be among 7 others similarly rec-ognized, each one with their own special story. But for me, I couldn’t think of a better or moredeserving “Thanksgiving Story.” A storyabout a soldier, who almost died in service tohis country for you and me and still has theHUMILITY to say “Thanks, but give it tosomeone else please”.

Happy Thanksgiving Jason and family and toALL military officers who serve and haveserved. There is no Thanksgiving table largeenough to hold our love and gratitude for you.

city’s demographics have totally changed. Thisis now a young, vibrant community with a newschool I’m honored to have named after me.The pulse of the city has also certainly pickedup as a result of our City Commission’s workto encourage progressive developments.”

DID YOU KNOW…Adding yet another positive note to the

city’s reputation for inviting the communityto enjoy great cultural events, the 4th annualSunny Isles Beach Jazz Fest in |October wasa great success featuring Spyro Gyra - therenowned American jazz fusion band. Inkeeping with the city’s commitment to giv-ing back to the community, the event helpedraise funds to support Joshua’s HeartFoundation and Miami Children’s Hospital.

DID YOU KNOW…At the Oct. 20 City Commission meeting,

an ordinance passed on first reading author-izing capital improvement revenue and rev-enue refunding bonds in an amount notexceeding $10 million. Mayor Edelcupnoted, “The new 2.3% interest rate is morethan 50% less than the 2001 rate…This is atribute to the city’s financial stability…Ourtax payers will be the beneficiaries of thissignificant savings [totaling $1.8 million].”

DID YOU KNOW…At the Oct. 20 City Commission meeting,

an ordinance was passed providing for trans-

ferring building heights within the SunnyIsles Boulevard south-edge street type with-in the Town Center District; and amending asection of the Mixed Use-Resort District(MU-R) to modify Floor Area Ratio bonuses, establish Federal Aviation Administrationrestrictions as height limitations [increasingfrom a maximum of 550 feet to 649 feet];and to permit connecting bridges betweencertain adjacent properties.

Mayor Edelcup emphasized, “The city isn’twaiting for the Federal government to bringstimulus [for new development]… We’re tak-ing positive steps to bring new, wonderfulconstruction back to our beautiful city.”

Attorney Cliff Schulman representing theTrump Group [of Williams Island fame] noted,“None of these changes add density or intensi-ty…it allows larger units and gives architectsadded flexibility. The Trump Group [is plan-ning to develop] The Mansions of Acqualinawith average unit sizes of 4,000 square feet and8,000 square foot penthouses - so there will bea significant improvement in tax revenues col-lected by the city. A skywalk to integrate [theexisting Acqualina tower with the new buildingis also being designed].”

DID YOU KNOW…The qualifying period is now between August

14 and August 17, 2012 for the Nov. 6, 2012Sunny Isles Beach general election for the fol-lowing City Commission seats: Residential areacommissioner – Seat 1, northern area (currentlyheld by Lewis J. Thaler); and residential areacommissioner – Seat 3, southern area (currentlyheld by George “Bud” Scholl). At the Oct. 20City Commission meeting, an ordinance was

passed amending the City Code to move thequalifying period dates up by a week in order tocomply with Miami-Dade County mandates.

In accordance with a charter amendmentvoters approved last May, prospective candi-dates have to have lived within the particularresidential area they’re seeking to representcontinuously for at least one year at the timeof qualifying. They are now also required toremain in the district for the duration of theirterms - but are allowed to move within thesame district of the city.

DID YOU KNOW…The “battle for the Alamo” was still being

waged? As of the Oct. 20 City Commissionmeeting, two developers, the WeintraubCompanies and Dezer Development, wereboth vying for the site next to the Sunny IslesBeach Government Center commonlyreferred to as the “Alamo property” (18080Collins Avenue).

Both the Weintraub Companies and DezerDevelopment presented Letters of Intentoffering the city a $7 million purchase price;however the Commission concurred the bestcourse of action would be to have each of thedevelopers submit more detailed proposalswith “final and best offers” before coming toa decision about which would be in the city’sbest interest.

DID YOU KNOW…The city recently celebrated the grand

opening of the new Heritage Park. Now,Sunny Isles Beach is moving forward tocomplete a comprehensive “green initiative”highlighted by the development of evenmore parks and green space coming to SunnyIsles Boulevard and the south end of the city.

DID YOU KNOW…Sunny Isles Beach has one of the lowest

property tax rates in Miami-Dade County;and this year, the city was among just tenMiami-Dade municipalities that had anincrease in property values – up by 8.3%from the previous year.

DID YOU KNOW…The City of Sunny Isles Beach helps fund

scholarships for high school residents. At theOct. 20 City Commission meeting, a resolutionpassed authorizing a $5,000 charitable contri-bution to the Sunny Isles Beach K-8 Trust Fundfor the College Scholarship Program.

Mayor Edelcup noted, “The CityCommission has made a commitment to pro-vide educational opportunities to our young res-idents.” Last year, the City Commissionapproved a college scholarship program forhigh school students who graduate from a highschool in Miami-Dade County. The first schol-arship recipients were selected by a committeecomposed of Police Chief Fred Maas and theprincipals from the Norman S. Edelcup/SunnyIsles Beach K-8 and the Alonzo and TracyMourning High School. Four students wereeach awarded $5,000 scholarships.

DID YOU KNOW…Almost one million vacationers visit Sunny

Isles Beach every year. The city is becomingone of the most desirable travel and leisuredestinations thanks in part to promotionalcampaigns launched by the Sunny Isles BeachTourism and Marketing Council, working incooperation with the Greater MiamiConvention and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB).Right now, special “2011 Winter StaycationPackages” are available at Acqualina Resort &Spa, Double Tree Ocean Point Resort & Spa,and the Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort.

According to Rolando Aedo, GMCVBExecutive Vice President and ChiefMarketing Officer, “Sunny Isles Beach is partof an amazing destination with its own uniquebrand recognized globally… Last year, the occu-pancy and revenue per available room went updramatically and in 2011 we’ve continued to seerecord growth. This is great news for Sunny IslesBeach and speaks to the amazing things that havehappened here. Ninety-six percent of visitorsexpressed their intent to return and this satisfac-tion reflects the city’s [exceptional] hotels, parksand beautification projects - indicating touristsand residents appreciate [the city’s amenities].”

BY RICHARD C. SCHULMANCity Historian

On November 11 wewill remember andacknowledge those whowere and are calledupon to put their liveson the line for theUnited States ofAmerica. For those who

died in the service of our country and forthose who live serving our nation, deservenot merely the grateful thanks, but also thesalute of each and every citizen ofAmerica. The most remarkable thing aboutveterans in general is that they came homeas motivated in peace as they were in war.

Calvin Coolidge once said, “The nationwhich forgets its defender will be itself for-gotten.”

In 1950, 37 percent of the male popula-tion 18 years and over were veterans. By1975, thanks to a couple of newer wars thatfigure had risen to 41.8 percent.

Perhaps the greatest honor we can payour veterans, living or dead, is bestexpressed in another quotation from thatmost eloquent of American presidents,Abraham Lincoln, “It is for us, the liv-ing…to be dedicated here to the unfinishedwork that they have thus far so noblyadvanced…that we here highly resolve thatthese dead shall not have died in vain; thatthis nation, under God, shall have anewbirth of freedom, and that government of

the people, by the people, for the peopleshall not perish from the earth.”

Lincoln spoke those words on November19, 1863. For some reason, November is aparticular month of remembrance andthanksgiving, going to the polls to vote, carrying the flag, and commemorating theend of World War I. So many of our citi-zens are Veterans of many wars, serving onthe front lines or in support behind thelines.

In fact, we are paying tribute to the greatheritage that we all share in this nation, andas a people devoted to the ideals ofFreedom and Democracy.

This era is also known as the Warring States period. Qu Yuan, disgruntled with the ruler and the state of affairs, protested against the regime by jumping into

the Mi Lo River. According to legend, local fishermen, upon seeing their

beloved poet’s act of courage, raced out with their boats in an attempt to save him. To their dismay, they arrived too late. To prevent his body from

being eaten by the fish, they beat the waters furiously with their paddles and threwrice dumplings wrapped in silk into the river to distract the fish.

The re-enactment of the villagers racing out to save Qu Yuan has become today’sdragon boat race festival. Celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month

of the Chinese calendar, dragon boat festival is not only one of the most important Chinese traditions second to Chinese New Year, but now

is an annual event held in over 40 countries.
