Children had a chance to slide downa slippery slope filled with snow mountedon hay, enjoy free carnival-style rides, explore their inner Picasso at the Arts andCrafts Stations and have their faces paint-

ed by an artist. If that wasn’t enoughexcitement, the children’s faces beamedwhen Santa Claus himself, having trav-eled all the way from the North Pole, appeared! He was personally deliveredthrough the streets of Collins Avenue bythe City’s Ocean Rescue Team in theirRed Rescue Truck, overflowing withlights! Santa took over 200 complimenta-ry photos with smiling faces in his spec-

tacular tent of holiday cheer with the helpof his friendly elves, made up of theCultural & Human Services Staff. Inaddition, a group of Holiday Carolerstraveled throughout the park, singingsweet melodies of familiar holidayfavorites as the guests watched.

Other activities at the event, included theawards presentation for the youth sportsprogram participants (cheerleading, base-

A child of 10 will look at someone fiveyears older and think that that’s old.Someone that’s 20 or 30 considers some-one of 40 or 50 as “getting up there.” So itcontinues to perhaps the 60s and 70s.

The question really consists ofwhere someone is old and could,in theory, retire to some retirementspot and start winding down. Intoday’s climate someone likeGeorge and Grace should be inthat situation. They have raisedtwo kids, one of each gender, worked long in their business orprofession and started checkingout retirement areas where they could per-haps just wind down and just enjoy the factthat they are retired. This could mean sell-ing their home which has now just them-selves in it.

However, their daughter has just gotten adivorce and feels that she has to go back toschool to get a masters to help her toimprove her personal position, that meansthat she wants to return to their home for

the two or more years she needs to accom-plish that goal.

Then there is the son, his wife and twochildren that has his house in foreclosureand feels that by coming home to George

and Grace, he can get a chanceto save enough perhaps to geta new start in business.

All this is well and good butwhere does it put George andGrace? These are after all theirchildren who need their help.If they continue to keep theirhouse open for the kids, whatall of a sudden what does that

mean to their retirement hopes? Here they are in their 70s and all of a

sudden it seems like they have to go backto their 40s and the responsibilities of 20or 30 years ago.

Their question seems to be exactlywhat and where does this winding downstart?

Where does it end? This is some retirement.

If you want to get intothe holiday spirit, just lookat all the festive decora-tions around town sublimi-nally putting you in themood to buy gifts. But ifthat doesn’t get your credit

card swiping, then try some of these “’tisthe season tips:”

• This year, do all your holiday shoppingat Target or Marshalls. Then after you fillyour cart with the most affordable gifts, head over to a designer store and buy your-self something really expensive so at leastyou can go into debt with a smile!

• Instead of getting an expensive finefragrance at a department store, bring yourlaptop to one of the parks in Sunny IslesBeach where you can get free WiFi. Thenshop on eBay and find the same fragrancefor half the price - just make sure you’renot buying a bottle that’s half the size!

• Go to Publix and buy a gift certificate

for your neighbor. Then start droppinghints that you haven’t been invited any-where for a holiday dinner so they’ll do allthe cooking and cleaning while you justenjoy the feast!

• If you want to drop a subtle hint toyour significant other that they need tolose a few pounds - put some passes for acomplimentary visit to Crunch Gym intheir holiday stocking – but then don’t besurprised if the lock has been changed nexttime you try to open the front door!

• Get stuck in traffic long enough to startdaydreaming about where you’d ratherbe…Then call your travel agent from yourcell phone and don’t be surprised when shetells you to stay in Sunny Isles Beach –where life is like a year-round vacation.

• Hire personal shoppers to get all yourholiday gifts for you…Then hire them againto return all the gifts you receive that are toosmall, too big or too ostentatious. After all, ifyou’re lucky enough to live in Sunny IslesBeach, it’s pretty hard to know what to getsomeone who already has everything!

To think is to contemplate ponder andreason. It is to mull over and arrive at a con-clusion. It has been humorously said, “Thatsome people think that they are thinkingwhen all they are doing is rearranging theirprejudices.” To see clearly and to be able tofollow the thread and chain of thought isvery important. There are many types andstyles of thinking. Some are more benefi-cial and accurate than others.

A syllogism is an example of faulty andillogical thinking. It is circular thinking thatcomes to an erroneous conclusion. It is verytricky because it is a type of logic thatdraws inaccurate conclusions based onbasic truths. It is a mental formulation inwhich you have a major premise, a minorpremise and a conclusion based on theagreement or correlation between these twopremises. An example would be Majorpremise- Aristotle is a man. Minor premise

– All men have facial hair. Conclusion-Aristotle has facial hair. Stated anotherway, Aristotle has facial hair. All men havefacial hair. Therefore, Aristotle is a man.So, round and round it goes in ever expand-ing silly circles.

It is not unusual for illogical thinking tomasquerade as logical thinking. People doit every day and cannot see how illogical itis. It prevents you from having a meaning-ful or productive conversation with them. One technique that may reduce your frus-tration is to keep repeating the truly logicalstatement like a broken record. Some peo-ple may not be able to ever see the error intheir thinking. They lack the intelligenceand intellectual ability to follow the precisetrend of thought. You may have to just giveup on them.

But, don’t give up on yourself. In yourown life you may be prone to make thesame syllogism mistakes in your thinking.Hopefully, you will become aware of itwhen you use it. Ideally you will be ableto retrain yourself and learn to think logi-cally.

Inspired by the immortal words of ThomasJefferson in his Declaration of Independencethat “All men are created equal,” ToussaintLouverture, Haiti’s founding father, began aslave insurrection against France in 1791 thatwas to last for 13 years. Toussaint askedPresident John Adams for aid for the sameliberty that had been achieved by the UnitedStates. Adams, from Massachusetts, respond-ed with mercantile trade, appointment of aCouncil General and sent the American navyto help provide sea-power for Toussaint. OnJanuary 1, 1804, having defeated Napoleon’stroops, Haiti declared independence andsought American recognition. Jefferson, nowpresident, faced a problem. Recognition ofHaiti represented a possible insurrection byhis own slaves and his neighbors. HistorianRoger C. Kennedy states that Jefferson,“May have had theoretical objections to slav-ery, but he objected more strenuously topower in the hands of former slaves.

Freedom, he knew, is contagious. WhileJefferson had some anxiety lest Napoleon re-colonize beyond Haiti, he did not relent in hisefforts to ‘starve out the black republic.’”According to Kennedy, “Napoleon attemptedto restore to Haiti a notoriously cruel system ofservitude, a restoration to which Jefferson pro-vided aid and comfort.” In March, 1804,Jefferson proposed to Britain that America joinwith the European powers in “an agreement notto allow the former (slaves) to have any form ofnavigation whatsoever or to furnish them withany arms or equipment.” Jefferson thendeployed the U.S. navy to help the Europeanpowers restore slavery to Haiti and issued anAmerican embargo on all trade with Haiti.

Following Jefferson’s lead, many southernstates passed laws forbidding immigrationfrom Haiti. Printers were jailed for publish-ing the Haitian Declaration of Independence. In Jefferson’s home-state of Virginia, “thelegislature required that blacks who werefreed by their masters must leave the statewithin one year.” According to Kennedy,“Although slavery was never restored to theisland, in economic isolation and virtuallyunder blockade, it declined into poverty.”Every American president thereafter refusedto recognize Haiti until Abraham Lincoln in1862, despite the fact that in 1825 Francegranted recognition of Haiti.

Sunny Isles Beach City Commission Members wish you Happy Holidays!

December 12, 2011 COMMUNITYNEWSPAPERS.COM Page 9

BY KATHERINE FERNANDEZ RUNDLEState Attorney, Miami-Dade County

The holiday shoppingseason is again upon us and, unfortunately, it always is apeak time for crimes such ashome burglaries, thefts, rob-beries and even muggings.

Especially in these tougheconomic times, I want to share some valu-able tips that can help prevent you frombecoming the victim of a crime during theholidays, particularly since this week marksthe start of our busy shopping season.

THINGS TO DO AT HOME:• Be extra cautious and lock your doors

and windows at all times.• Don’t display gifts and other valuables

near windows or doorways where they canbe seen.

• If you go out in the evening, leave on atleast one light and the radio or television sothat the house looks occupied.

• If you go out of town, get an automatictimer for your lights. Ask a neighbor or trust-ed friend to watch your house and perhapspark his or her car in your driveway fromtime to time.

• Contact the post office and request thatyour mail not be delivered during the daysyou will be away. Your carrier will deliveryour “held” mail upon your return or youmay choose to pick it up at your designatedpost office branch.

• Newspaper deliveries also should beplaced on hold while you are away so theydo not pile up and alert passersby that yourhouse is unoccupied.

• After Christmas when the gifts have beenunwrapped, break down the boxes and foldthem so as the words are on the inside. Don’tput the boxes “as is” out on the curb for thetrash collectors as this just advertises your

newly acquired electronics and other valu-ables that are now in your home.

TIPS FOR SAFE SHOPPING:• Always stay alert to your surroundings

and the people around you. Avoid areas wherethere are people “hanging around” in parkinggarages, parking lots, or the outside of stores.Notify the police or security personnel.

• Try to shop before dark if possible andcoordinate shopping trips with a friend if youplan to be out late.

• Park your car in well-lit areas and neverin dark areas, no matter how convenient thespot might be.

• Always lock your car doors and windowseven if you are only gone for a few minutes. It takes a thief only seconds to steal a car.

• Keep packages and other valuables outof public view, preferably locked in thetrunk. If you place recent purchases in yourtrunk and want to continue shopping, moveyour car to another area. If thieves are watch-ing, they could very easily pry your trunkopen and steal your purchases.

• Have your keys in hand when you returnto your car, and always check the interior ofyour car before you unlock the door to get in.

• To discourage purse-snatchers, don’toverburden yourself with packages.

• Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.Pay for purchases with a check or credit cardwhenever possible.

• Be extra careful with purses and wallets.Women should carry their purses under theirarms with the strap across their body andmen should keep their wallets in an insidejacket pocket and not a back trouser pocket.

• Finally, be sure to teach your children togo only to a store clerk or security guard toask for help if they should become separatedfrom you while in a store or shopping mall. They should never go into a parking lot alone.

I wish you and your family a safe andwonderful holiday season.

BY CHIEF FRED MAAS Sunny Isles Beach Police

Department

Recently, PoliceOfficer AAllaann SSaallaaddrriiggaassof your Sunny IslesBeach Police Departmentwas the 3rd of our offi-cers to graduate from the

prestigious and extremely difficult RapidDeployment Force (R.D.F.) School.

Previously, Officer Javier Estevez andDetective Luke Plesa were graduates. Now, Alan joins their team. This elitegroup is trained in critical incidentresponse, dignitary protection, homelandsecurity issues and high tactical situations. The 2 week course is physically grueling(not just demanding) and mentally chal-lenging.

In Officer Saladrigas class, only 10 of 42candidates passed and received certification. It is an arduous but worthwhile trainingcourse. In the end we now have “3” mem-bers of this elite county wide team that ulti-mately will benefit our city and residents inyears to come.

Meanwhile, LLtt.. MMiikkee MMuullvveeyy whoheads up our Criminal Investigations Unit, recently graduated from Advanced TrainingCourse at the Unites States Secret ServiceAcademy in Washington, D.C.

This elite training is only offered to aselect few from around the country. Thecourses deal with Dignitary Protection,Homeland Security and Critical Incidentissues. Lt. Mulvey will supervise thoseevents and our officers who are assigned tothem, such as our R.D.F. trained officers.

SSggtt.. BBllaakkee RRooyyaall recently graduatedfrom a Senior Leadership DevelopmentCourse hosted by Broward Sheriff’s Officeand in conjunction with F.D.L.E the Stateof Florida Law Enforcement Agency. Thiswas a great opportunity to develop our cur-rent supervisors into senior management

leaders and the future of this departmentand city.

MMoottoorrccyyccllee aanndd TTrraaffffiicc UUnniitt OOffffiicceerrJJaavviieerr EEsstteevveezz travelled all the way toTallahassee, Florida to become a trainer forour current and future motorcycle officers. This will enable our traffic and motor squadto train in house and locally, embellish theirskills under the supervision of certifiedinstructor (Estevez) and produce new ridersto the unit for the future of this agency. This is a rigorous and physical training andinstruction course. We are fortunate tohave talented and safe motorcycle officersand now under the watchful eye of OfficerEstevez, they will become only better andsafer riders while doing their job.

Finally, on December 16, 2011, CCaappttaaiinnDDwwiigghhtt SSnnyyddeerr will graduate from theprestigious National Academy of the F.B.I.in Quantico, VA. This is probably the mostdifficult and demanding training of all as itrequires a commitment of (11) elevenweeks of full time training, separated fromfamily and loved ones while attending theAcademy. This exclusive opportunity isextremely difficult to get accepted for andthe number of positions are few and farbetween. But our agency has a great work-ing relationship with the local F.B.I. and weare grateful to them and Special Agent inCharge Mr. John Gilles for presenting thisopportunity to our department and CaptainSnyder. He has represented the City ofSunny Isles Beach and our police depart-ment with pride, professionalism andrespect. He has made a great sacrifice, sohas his family while he has been gone. Buthis accomplishments will serve him, ourdepartment and the city in high regard formany years to come.

As Police Chief, I am proud of my offi-cers and their commitment to this city andour community of residents. This trainingand others like it, helps to develop ourOfficers and Command Staff to serve youeven better for the future.

cheering gifts of services and amenitiesthat make the holidays even more enjoy-able for residents and visitors alike.

‘CHEER FOR A SAFE CITY’Encouraging the community to step-up

crime prevention measures, the Sunny IslesBeach Police Department led by ChiefFred Maas advises, “You should never feelhesitant about picking up the phone to callthe police about a suspicious incident, per-son or something you feel uncomfortableabout. We are far more willing to ‘check itout’ even if it turns out to be nothing – thento come out after the fact and discover acrime has been committed.

“During this time of year, have a height-ened sense of awareness - you can be fol-lowed after leaving a store when peoplecan see you putting packages into yourcar…We’re also stepping up our policepatrols around banks and ATM machines. One of the biggest safeguards is to be surenot to leave valuables inside vehicles. Theaverage thief looks to prey upon yourattempt to conceal gifts. Our goal is tomake the opportunity for a crime as diffi-cult as possible for the criminal.” Here areways to “victim-proof” yourself:

• Never leave valuables inside an unat-tended vehicle or out in the open

• Whenever possible, shop with anotherperson or a group.

• Be aware of you surroundings, reportsuspicious activity.

• Do not carry large amounts of curren-cy. Physical currency gets the attention ofcriminals when it is exposed, and it is verydifficult to replace if stolen.

• Use safer means to purchase items -debit cards are a good choice. Even ifstolen, the probability of a criminal beingable to use them before you cancel them isslim. If they are used fraudulently, thecharges are insured.

• Utilize safe online payment methods ifmaking online purchases.

• Make sure you’re not being followed.People watch certain “high end” stores foritems such as TV’s, stereos and computersto be brought to the car in boxes. Thenwhen you make your next stop and leavethe items inside, you can return to find asmashed window and your recent purchas-es gone!

‘CHEER FOR PROACTIVE INITIATIVES’ “Getting better all the time!” could be

the slogan for Sunny Isles Beach thanks toongoing beautification projects and capitalimprovements enhancing the city’s infra-structure and aesthetic appeal. Changingdemographics have also served as a cata-lyst for progressive efforts spearheaded bythe City Commission to build more parksincluding the new Heritage Park plus evenmore parks coming soon to Sunny IslesBoulevard and the south end of the city.

‘CHEER FOR INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE’ Early snow falls, along with exceptional

values on air fare and room rates nation-wide have helped set the scene for a “sunnyholiday season” in the city of Sunny IslesBeach. Just before Thanksgiving, millionsof travelers packed their bags while resortsand businesses along Collins Avenuespruced up to welcome holiday guests.

To let the whole world know about thecity’s remarkable renaissance, the SunnyIsles Beach Tourism and MarketingCouncil is always on a mission to buildmarkets for the “here and now” as well asthe future. Beyond the vacation values atSunny Isles Beach resorts, the Council pro-motes the great intrinsic value associatedwith enjoying a vacation in Florida’s

Riviera…From multi-million dollar devel-opments and beach renourishment - tosweeping beautification and capitalimprovement programs initiated by theCity Commission - plus heightened securi-ty ensured by the Police Department,Sunny Isles Beach is now being heraldedas “one of the most desirable and safeSouth Florida destinations.”

‘CHEER FOR A HAPPY NEW YEAR’ Aside from taking time off for Christmas

and New Year’s Day, city officials and citystaff continue to work tirelessly to ensure“everyday’s a holiday” for residents andvisitors enjoying the highest quality of lifein Sunny Isles Beach.

Promising to be another prosperousNew Year, recent City Commissionmeeting agendas have already been fea-turing requests for property site planapprovals and zoning code amendmentsdesigned to help bring even more luxu-rious new developments to Sunny IslesBeach. The Commission Meeting Agenda

December 12, 2011 COMMUNITYNEWSPAPERS.COM Page 13

Since its launch in 2008, the HyundaiGenesis sedan has captured honors fromjust about every automotive association inthe country — including the Miami-basedSouthern Automotive Media Association— and it continues to draw rave reviewswith the 2012 model.

Hyundai engineers keep improving thebeautifully styled car, this year adding newdirect injection technology to the standardLambda V-6 engine, a new eight-speed auto-matic transmission and enhanced chassistuning. They have even added a new poweroption, a 5.0-liter direct injection Tau V-8engine available on the 5.0 R-Spec model.

The new Tau V-8 is the most powerfulHyundai engine ever, producing 429 hp at6,400 rpm and 376 pounds-feet of torque at5,000 rpm, and the cylinder bore wasincreased for a total displacement of 5.0 liters. At the same time, direct injection technologyhas been added to dramatically increase

power and torque, while reducing fuel con-sumption and emissions. Compression ratiohas been increased from 10.4 to 11.5:1 forgreater efficiency and output.

The Tau also has a revised bedplate forimproved block rigidity and less noise, aswell as camshaft carriers and a roller timingchain to improve valvetrain stability. Thisnew V-8 still offers all of the premiumengine technology from the 4.6-liter V-8,including Dual Continuously VariableValve Timing (D-CVVT), a tuned variableinduction system, and low-friction dia-mond-like coatings (DLC) on piston skirts, rings and tappets.

Even with these power increases, fuel econ-omy is 16/25 mpg, almost matching the 4.6-liter engine (17/26 mpg).

The Tau 5.0-liter V-8 is mated to a neweight-speed transmission. This new Hyundai-developed transmission adds two more ratiosfor better acceleration, shifting smoothnessand efficiency over the old six-speed gearbox. All eight-speed transmissions includeSHIFTRONIC manual shift capability and thisnew eight-speed transmission is the firstoffered by a non-luxury branded manufacturer.

Hyundai engineers have made furtherrefinements to the 3.8 and 4.6 model sus-pension damping calibrations. These pre-

cise adjustments minimize the compromis-es between handling precision and ridecomfort. In addition, body roll control forthe 3.8 model is enhanced with a larger rearstabilizer bar, while diameter increasingfrom 17 mm to 18 mm.

Braking also is improved with rotor sizeon the 3.8 model increasing from 12.6 inch-es to 13 inches and the addition of higherperformance four-piston brake calipers, and the 4.6 model front brake rotorsincreasing from 13 inches to 13.6 inchesfor better fade resistance.

There is little change to the exterior; the

grille has been enhanced and the headlightshave been redesigned with the addition ofLED accents and daytime running lights, whilethe taillights have been redesigned and newdual asymmetrical exhaust tips are more clean-ly integrated with the new bumper fascia.

Pricing on the 2012 Hyundai Genesisranges from $34,200 to $46,500.

As previously mentioned and promised, it is our intent to educate thepublic in specific areas of traffic law, especially those that are mostcommon for violations and hazardous to the safety of all. If one life issaved, one accident is prevented, one driver is kept from receiving acitation, because they are now better educated in the law, then our pur-pose for this column will be SSUUCCCCEESSSSFFUULL!!

SSeeaattbbeellttss aanndd CChhiilldd CCaarr SSeeaattss!!Fla. State Statute 316.614

SEATBELTS This law is strictly enforced and heavily campaigned for during traffic safetyevents. It is a NON-MOVING VIOLATION which will NOT cause points onyour driver’s license, but it is still an EXPENSIVE fine for violations, in mostcases $129.00 per violation. Passengers in the front seat are required to wearseat belts as well.

CHILD RESTRAINTSFla. State Statute 316.613

This law was created to protect our children, sometimes from their own par-ents. Some of the most horrific fatalities in car accidents have been that ofchildren being ejected from a vehicle because of no car seat or improperlyinstalled restraints. An adult driver should ALWAYS insure that ALL his pas-sengers, most especially CHILDREN, are in a proper restraint. What is prop-er or legal?

55 yyeeaarrss ooff aaggee aanndd uunnddeerr::Restraint must be a crash tested, federally approved child restraint device.

33 yyeeaarrss ooff aaggee aanndd uunnddeerr::The device must be a separate carrier or a vehicle manufacturer’s integrated

child seat and a seat belt may be used to lock it into place.Additionally, sometimes size and weight of the child factor into the restraints, but that is due to manufacture’s suggestions, not necessarily the LAW.

LAW AND SOLUTION:The federal, state and local governments are serious about these safety cam-paigns. You see the ads on TV all the time. You also see the devastatingeffects in commercials about the stories of loss of life.Repetitive practice is the BEST way of insuring auto-matic buckle-ups. In other words, when the carstarts, before you put it into reverse or drive, take asecond to insure that All your passengers andYOURSELF are RESTRAINED

Several years ago, amovie was produced thatbecame very popularamongst people of all ages.It was called “The BucketList.” It starred someHollywood big names

including Jack Nicholson and MorganFreeman. It dealt with people who made alist of things they wanted to accomplishbefore their life on earth ended. When a fel-low employee used that term a few weeksago, that something was on their “bucketlist” to do and they planned on accomplish-ing it that next weekend, some of us wereable to help by providing the “kite” that shealways wanted to fly with her niece. It gotme to thinking. What would my “BucketList” of thanks be for this Thanksgiving? Here is some of my list:

I am grateful to have a job, in today’seconomy.

I am grateful to work in the City whereI perform that job.

I am grateful for those I work for, thoseI work with and those that work for me;especially those who work for me.

I am grateful for the beautiful parks and

green space and facilities that have been pro-vided to the City for our children and adultsover the past 13 years, when we had none.

I am grateful for those who continue togo the extra step, that go above andbeyond in providing quality customerservice to our citizens, which sets us apartas a city from many others.

I am grateful to all the Veterans past andpresent, living and deceased that providedthe opportunity for each of us to live in thiscity in peace and tranquility.

I am grateful for the Wall ofRecognition that family members andfriends can visit, dedicated to thoseVeterans, at Heritage Park.

I am grateful when I see the smilingfaces of the kids at our school in the city, knowing that although challenging attimes we are making every effort to pro-vide them with the best and safest educa-tional environment.

Lastly, I recognize that sometimes mygratitude is overshadowed by other emo-tions, but once a year, this time of the year,I am again reminded of how much I haveto be Thankful for and How long myBucket List actually is…..

BY RICHARD SCHULMANCity Historian

One hundred andsixty-seven yearsbefore the birth ofChrist, a Syrian Kingnamed AAnnttiioocchhuusscaptured the land ofIsrael. He ordered

the Jews to give up their religion andworship his idols. All who refused toobey his command were put to death. What followed was the first fight forreligious freedom. The Jews foughtback. Even though they were greatlyoutnumbered by the Syrian forces, theJewish Maccabean army defeated theenemy and recaptured Jerusalem.

Immediately they marched to theHoly temple, smashed the idols theSyrians had put there. When theycleaned and repaired the temple, every-one gathered to celebrate the rededica-tion. However, only one flask of HolyOil was found to light the new Menorah. This was just enough oil to burn for one

day. But, a great miracle happened; toeveryone’s amazement, this little flaskof oil burned for eight days and nights.Because of this miracle, we celebrateChanukah for eight days.

One of the things that make a Christmasparty so delightful is that it is everybody’sparty. Most other parties are in honor ofsome friend, relative, or colleague. We cel-ebrate and salute the guest of honor’s greatnew achievement or anniversary. We cometogether to congratulate a particular indi-vidual for a notable accomplishment. ButChristmas is something else.

Christmas, of course, is a birthday party, but it is an idea, a symbol and above all aspirit of fellowships. At the same time, aChristmas party has another unique attrib-ute we cannot ignore. Christmas is a gift-giving occasion and gift-giving and gift-receiving are times when most of us havemore reason than elsewhere in the year tofeel happy, to feel friendly toward our com-panions, perhaps even to be wallowing inthe milk of human kindness.

A great many of the things we accept, asancient Christmas customs are a lot youngerthan we think. It was little more than a hun-dred years ago that Americans began send-ing each other Christmas cards. The nightbefore Christmas was a fine time for thekids long before Clement Moore wrote a

poem about it in 1822. The Christmas tree, however, is a good deal older, and so is theChristmas party. George Washington won agreat victory over the British in theAmerican Revolution when he surprisedHessian troops who were sleeping off theirChristmas revelry.

I think it is only fitting to remember thatSaint Nicholas, who is more celebrated atthis time of year as Santa Claus, is not onlythe patron saint of children and of sailorsbut also of pawnbrokers, suggesting that itis all right to go into hock at Christmas time, but prudence argues as strongly against thatcourse as against overestimating one’scapacity for spiked eggnog. Think beforeyou drink and take stock before you hock.

With electric vehicles increasing inpopularity, some might wonder if gas-powered cars eventually will become athing of the past.

With gas coming at such a high cost, many people are looking for an alterna-tive to having to pay at the pump. Getready to see fewer gas stations and moreelectric re-charging stations in the nottoo distant future as more and moreelectric cars start popping up on localstreets and flying down the highways.

The latest all-electric cars share onething in common — they need to berecharged. And that can take as long as20 hours or more using commonhousehold electrical current. That’s

why public, high-voltage charging sta-tions are starting to pop up all over thecountry.

With major plans being put in placefor Miami-Dade County, everyoneagrees that new electrical charging sta-tions definitely are needed. It also turnsout that South Florida just was awarded$500,000 by Uncle Sam, a grantintended to initiate a new grid of publicchargers.

However, the $500,000 grant isn’tdesignated for any stations that actual-ly will be built. Those funds are onlyto pay for the planning process for thestations.

Owners of the new electric cars wouldbe able to plug into public charging sta-

tions around South Florida — when theyare available — but insiders say that itcould still take years.

Broward County CommissionerSuzanne Gunzburger, who chairs theSouth Florida Regional PlanningCouncil, agrees with that assessment.

“It may take up to three years to seeelectric charging stations in SouthFlorida,” she said. “If you were won-dering where the money for the elec-tric charging stations would be comingfrom, don’t look any farther. You and Iand everyone else will be paying forit.”

Some $350 million dollars in federalfunding already is committed to build-ing more than 20,000 charging stations

in other parts of the country, but thoseconstruction dollars have yet to arrive inMiami-Dade County.

In the meantime, some private compa-nies are spending their own money toinstall chargers for their customers. Thebrand new units at the Aventura Mall arejust one example.

Still, there are those who believe aninvestment in new charging stations islike sinking money into a black hole.Others think that the money can berecouped, and that it’s a good invest-ment for the state.

It may not be until early next yearbefore the $500,000 electric car study iscomplete. For now, there is no plan as towhere public chargers will be builtaround South Florida, or ultimately, who’s going to pay for them.
