II t has been a very busy year in theathletics department. We hit theground running starting in
January with youth basketball, youthcheerleading, Under-12 travel leaguesoccer team, soccer academy practice, adult league soccer, and our soccer tour-naments.
The basketball teams played in theNorth Miami/Sunny Isle Beach League;games were played at home, RK SportsCenter Gymnasium at PelicanCommunity Park, North Miami Senior
High School, and Alonzo/TracyMourning High School. We sponsoredtwo teams in under-8, one team in theunder-11, and two teams in the under-14.We had a very good season with theUnder-14 team, Space Jam. They com-piled a record of 12-0 and won the leaguechampionship.
The under-12 travel league soccerteam has played in several tournamentsincluding our own at the City of SunnyIsles Beach. This is the first time theteam has been ranked. They are ranked#76 in Florida and #399 in the Nation.

HONOR and all excitement and focus was on them. And to add to the excitement a little bitof American Idol Theme, was utilized to capture the nervousness and anticipation of those whowould come away with Major scholarships and those who would receive $500.00 toward theircollege expenses. In the end all were WINNERS, because the community learned more aboutthese (8) eight gifted and giving students from our own City of Sunny Isles Beach. I for onewas very proud to be associated with such an event. It seems hard to believe that just about(1) one year ago, this entire program was the brainstorm of the Mayor and our Commissionersto reward and encourage our best young citizens, our college bound seniors.
And so it came to pass that after a lengthy application process, (8) eight finalists weresummoned together, unknown until the end who were the major winners, in one elegantroom with great food, great camaraderie, great suspense. Strangers became familiar aseveryone there supported a common theme:

He found it difficult to deal with his sit-uation, after all he was 15 years older thanher. She had always run around with fel-lows much younger than she was, whoprobably in the physical sense operated ata full orchestra level while he was any incomparison, a small band. Therewas really no way he could com-pete at that level physically andsometimes that small band waspretty out of sync.
What bothered him more wasthat he really cared for her. Aftera failed marriage that left himwith many doubts and not the bestof self esteem, their meeting hadseemed like a tremendous bit of luck. Theygot along beautifully both into fitness, proper food to eat, dress code, even politi-cally on the same page.
All this was good but he had that terri-ble foreboding that she really enjoyedthose younger ones better in all ways hecertainly couldn’t cope with. How couldhe compete at those levels that seemedshe seemed to enjoy? He felt that it was
eating him up so much that it probablywas best that they perhaps stopped see-ing each other before it completelydestroyed his feelings and self respect inwhat he was seeing as a very bad ego sit-uation for himself and if the time to back
off before this hurt him muchtoo much.
He went over to her apartmentwhere he felt he would have totell her that it would be best toput some space between them.
As he walked into her apart-ment, she rushed over to him, flung her arms around him “Ijust love you so,” she purred, “I
used to have so little self esteem that Isurrounded myself with these young guysbecause it was an ego builder to me eventhough I really got very little out of it,then you came along and made me feel soalive. I finally find that I have a real manin my life that I love and fulfills all of myneeds at every level.”
He stared at her. He felt marvelous. Evenhis band had turned into a full orchestra.

Now that hurricane sea-son is upon us, everyonehas to be prepared for thepossibility of evacuationorders being issued.Although we should allstock up on supplies - if a
dangerous storm is headed this way, thegood news is it could be the perfect time totake an “evacuation vacation!”
• If you choose Las Vegas, maybe youcould join the betting pool laying odds onjust how many named storms there will bethis season!
• California is always nice to visit aslong as Murphy’s law doesn’t shake upyour evacuation vacation with an earth-quake or out of control brush fire.
• An affordable evacuation vacation toan Orlando theme park is always an option– just remember the old saying “you canrun - but you can’t hide” when an unpre-dictable storm decides to follow you to
Cinderella’s Castle (don’t think it has hur-ricane shutters).
• A lot of evacuation vacations mayrequire booking flights - but before board-ing the airplane, double-check with theairline to make sure all the passengershave had their flu shots.
• Other great evacuation vacation ideasinclude a second honeymoon in Mexico(bring bottled water from your hurricanesupplies to avoid Montezuma’s revenge);a diving excursion (don’t get too close toany stingrays); an African safari (check tosee if your cans of “Off” protect againstmalaria); or a single’s sojourn to Club Med(not everyone you meet at least 10 yearsyounger will be a gold digger or gigolo!)
Since living in Sunny Isles Beach is likebeing on a year-round vacation, odds arevoluntary evacuations won’t be too preva-lent – but the only good news about anactive hurricane season is now you have agreat excuse for getting that new plasmaTV you wanted to watch all the weatherreports following trouble in the tropics!

There is a story about Motherhoodthat is very touching. “After a forest fire inYellowstone National Park, forest rangersbegan their trek up a mountain to assessthe inferno’s damage. One ranger found abird literally petrified in ashes, perchedstatuesquely on the ground at the base of atree. Somewhat sickened by the eeriesight, he knocked over the bird with astick. When he gently struck it, three tinychicks scurried from under their deadmother’s wings. The loving mother, keen-ly aware of impending disaster, had car-ried her offspring to the base of the treeand had gathered them under her wings, instinctively knowing that the toxic smokewould rise. She could have flown to safe-ty but had refused to abandon her babies. Then the blaze had arrived and the heathad scorched her small body, the mother
had remained steadfast because she hadbeen willing to die, so those under thecover of her wings would live.”
This little story captures the essenceof Motherhood in all its glory. It is a storythat illustrates the ideal qualities webelieve mothers should possess. It mayarouse feelings of gratitude to your ownmother or it may make you feel sad andresentful that you did not have such amother.
If you did not have a mother or if youdid not have an ideal mother then you canbe your own mother. You can learn tolove and cherish yourself. It is veryimportant to realize that you are loveableeven if no one loved you or loves you.Make this belief a part of your being.Think about what you would want yourmother to say to you. Talk to her andshare your feelings. Tell her of youraccomplishments, dreams and desires.Think about how much she would appre-ciate you and how proud she would be.Be nice to the child in you. Nurture your-self with love every day.

Thomas Jefferson was insanely jealous ofthe successful oratorical skills in court by hisfellow Virginia attorney Patrick Henry.Jefferson had spent years preparing for thepractice of law under Virginia’s outstandingattorney George Wythe, whereas Henrybecame a lawyer without any legal training orpreparation. It is questionable if Henry everread a legal book before becoming a lawyer.Henry mesmerized juries and won almostevery case he tried, whereas Jefferson, a bril-liant legal scholar with a notoriously poorspeaking voice, “In not one of his major caseshad he succeeded.”
In 1773, Jefferson was preparing notes onthe subject of divorce. He sat in court observ-ing Henry try a matrimonial case for KittyEustice Blair who sued the Blair family for hersizable dower right to Blair’s slaves, after hisdeath. “The evidence,” Jefferson wrote as toHenry’s legal presentation, “was voluminous
and indecent.” Kitty, however, won her caseand her mother heaped praise in correspon-dence on Henry, her lawyer; “He shined in thecause of Justice backed by the law.”Jeffersonwas left sputtering by Henry’s performanceand results.
“If Jefferson ever ranted, it was on thesubject of Henry.” While their political viewsconformed exactly (Jefferson’s later Declara-tion of Independence and Henry’s ‘Give meliberty or give me death’), Jefferson said thatHenry could not draw up a bill or a brief “onthe most simple subject which could bear legalcriticism…for indeed there was no accuracyof idea in his head.”
Jefferson’s criticism of Henry was also“an indication of his growing disillusion withthe practice of law.” As a financial crisis in thecolonies continued, few clients were payinghim. As he turned away from trials and con-centrated on preparing briefs and pleadings, his earnings dropped nearly 50% in 1773, hislast full year of practicing law. Collectionsrarely exceeded 50% of his legal bills. Finally,in 1774, at age 31, he abandoned his law prac-tice and sacrificed two thirds of the moneysowed by clients. Jefferson’s jealousy of Henrylater turned to bitter hatred, which remainedwith him for the rest of his life.

The Sunny Isles Beach Police Departmentrecently received a special package from aprominent local sports team. No, it was notfrom the Florida Marlins, Panthers, or theMiami Heat, but from the NFL’s MiamiDolphins. The gift was a commemorative“Game Ball” presented out of appreciation forthe Sunny Isles Beach Police Department’sparticipation in the first annual “DolphinsCycling Challenge”, which was committed toraise funds for the University of Miami’sSylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.
In typical fashion, the Sunny Isles BeachPolice Department stepped up to the plate forthis outstanding charity bicycle ride, which notonly raised substantial financial donations, butmore importantly raised the public’s awarenessof this lifesaving treatment and research center.
Our traffic unit under the direction ofSergeant Dan Gnagi provided pivotal trafficsupport, to assist the riders safely along their
way as they traveled through our city, en-routeto their final destination in Palm Beach.
As always, part of our police department’scommunity service philosophy will alwaysinclude participation in these very specialcharity events, as giving back to our extendedcommunities is an obligation we hold dear andwill never be overlooked.
This prominent memento will be on displaywith all of the other distinguished departmen-tal awards in the trophy case located in thelobby of the police department, which is situ-ated on the second floor of the GovernmentCenter.
On a sad side note, it is an unfortunate coin-cidence on the day of this writing, JimMandich, affectionately known as the “Mad-Dog” passed away after a long and courageousbattle against cancer. Mr. Mandich was affiliat-ed with the Sylvester Comprehensive CancerCenter as both a patient and generous fundrais-er. It was out of tribute to Mr. Mandich, whowas a former Miami Dolphin player andbeloved member of the Dolphin broadcastteam, that the Dolphin’s cycling team was

In front of their colleagues at a joint roll call on April 6,2011, several members of the police department were present-ed the prestigious awards by the Public Safety and AdvisoryCouncil. These awards have become very special over theyears as they are named for and sponsored by the families forwhom they are named. There were a few surprises this year, but without a doubt each award was presented to absolutelythe “Right” person. Each award stands for its own specialcharacteristics and qualities. The Awards Presented Were:
WILLIAM “BILL” PARRILLO AWARD TO OFFICER RUSSELL RIDLEY
This award in its 3rd year was created to recognize thosewith qualities of compassion, benevolence, community
involvement, especially helping with students, youth and theless fortunate. Officer Russell Ridley was the standout recip-ient for this year. Quiet, humble and behind the scenes arethe best way to describe this Officer. From feeding and car-ing for the less fortunate, to checking on the members andemployees of businesses in our city, Russell has a heart thatis bigger than his 6 foot frame. He exemplifies what theParrillo Award is all about.
“JOE BORRELL” AWARD TO DETECTIVE LUKE PLESAThis award is sponsored by resident Frank Borrell in the
memory of his father “Joe,” an International BoxingChampion of 3 countries. But the award is not based uponhis athletic prowess, but the qualities of benevolence, tenac-ity, hard work and dedication. The selection this year wasclear cut as Detective Plesa possesses all the above and moreand tackles his job with relentless spirit that is recognized
and appreciated. “JoeBorrell” would havebeen proud of this year’srecipient just like previ-ous years.
Congratulations to bothrecipients for these presti-gious and importantawards. Next edition wewill bring you the “Officerof the Month” and “BillLone Memorial Award.”

Officer Ridley Wins Parrillo Award! Detective Plesa Takes Home Borrell Award
BY CHIEF FRED MAAS Sunny Isles Beach Police Department
On Thursday, April 21, 2011, Mr. MichaelMills representing the National Committeefor Employee Support of Guard and ReserveOfficers presented a very special award tothe City of Sunny Isles Beach for their con-tinued support of military officers returninghome from war. Why is this award so sig-nificant? Well, for several reasons, the mostimportant being the humanistic side of theirsupport. Unbelievable as it may seem, thereare so many places where military officershave returned home after deployment towar, only to find their jobs eliminated, orchanged. However, in Sunny Isles Beach, their position was of support and caring andwelcome home to our soldiers and “we keptyour job open for you.” And this commis-sion thru the City Manager’s Office, dideven more I assure you.
Because of the support he received,Officer Albert Porro nominated his employ-
er, the City of Sunny Isles Beach for recog-nition as to how an employer SHOULDtreat their military soldiers both whiledeployed and upon their return home. Theyare the soldiers who keep us all safe fromforeign attacks and terrorism. Many ofthem paid the ultimate price.
In a previous article, I spoke of howOfficer Porro was so grateful to the Mayorand Commission and Manager for thereception and warm welcome he receivedupon his year of active war deployment. Now, it was the City who received recogni-tion for the treatment, style and class theyexhibit to their employees, especially themilitary ones. Chief Maas had the honor ofaccepting the award on behalf of the Citybecause Albert Porro works for your SunnyIsles Beach Police Department.
Congratulations to our Commissioners, our Community and our employees! And aspecial thank you to Mr. Michael Mills, arecently retired Assistant Police Chief forhis dedication to this noble cause and effort.

The new 2012 Bentley Continental GT isa deliciously decadent automobile. It is sen-sual in design, yet powerful and fast enoughto handle any challenge on the highway. Itis an amazing combination of style, speedand comfort.
The original Continental GT coupe wasintroduced back in 2003 and re-establishedBentley as a player in the ultra-luxury two-door sport sedan market. The new versionis an upgrade on the original, with numer-ous little improvements and subtle changesthat all contribute to making a better auto-mobile, but without seriously dating theolder original. The changes are subtle andinclude a more upright grille and LED run-ning lights trimming the main projectorbeams.
Interestingly, Bentley says the primarybody panels on the new Continental GThave been fabricated with a new techniquethat involves heating single sheets of alu-
minum to 950 degrees, then shaping themunder high pressure to remove welds andseams, allowing designers to produce muchtighter bends and curves. These advancedaluminum Super Forming production tech-niques allow for a more sculpted body andsharp power lines. The result is a new bodywith improved aerodynamics that delivers asmoother, quieter and more stable ride athigher speeds.
Under the hood, the Continental GT ispowered by Bentley’s six-liter, 12-cylinder,twin-turbocharged 567 bhp engine mated toa new Quickshift transmission capable ofdouble downshifts. And, thanks toadvanced FlexFuel technology, the enginealso can run on both standard unleadedgasoline and sustainable bioethanol (up toE85) or any mix of the two. All this powerdelivers a 0-60 mph clocking in 4.4 secondsand a top speed of 198 mph.
Later this year, an all-new, high-outputeight-cylinder engine will be available. It’san advanced power engine and will delivera 40 percent reduction in emissions, com-pared with the W12 engine.
Both engines are mated to an all-wheeldrive system with a sporty rear-torque biasto minimize understeer during hard corner-ing, allowing more experienced drivers tocontrol the car’s line and balance with pre-
cise throttle manipulation. On the inside, the cabin is handcrafted,
with a bold, sweeping dashboard andinstrument panel finished in premium soft-touch leather. The distinctive cobra-designseats give added comfort and rear cabinspace has been “enhanced.”
A new touchscreen 30GB infotainmentsystem includes new advanced satellitenavigation with dynamic route guidance,seven-digit postal code entry and GoogleMap compatibility. Audio systems have thelatest wide frequency Balance Mode
Radiator speakers as standard equipment, with Revolutionary Dirac Dimensions DSPfor exceptional sound reproduction fromthe Naim for Bentley premium audio system.
And all this luxury and power for a merestarting price of $189,900.

It’s ‘never too late’ for fitnessBY BARI AUERBACH
Too busy, too old, tootired, too out of shape to walkin a gym…There are all toomany reasons why many peo-ple give up on trying to lead amore active lifestyle promot-ing greater health and longevi-ty. But the philosophy “it’snever too late for fitness” is alltoo true and just about anyonecan ”Just do it!”
Neverr Tooo Late:: Exerciseplans that incorporate weighttraining and cardiovascularactivities can help men andwomen of all ages get strongerand live longer. People whoroutinely exercise can reducebody fat, build muscle mass, strengthenbones, improve endurance for dailylifestyle activities and reduce their risk forheart disease. Youu Don’tt Havee too Gett Tooo Muscular:Many women are hesitant to start weighttraining programs because they’re afraid ofbecoming too bulky - but according to TheAmerican College of Sports Medicine, women generally have too much estrogenin their bodies to build large muscles.
The average woman who incorporatesweight training into her fitness plan at leasttwice a week can gain almost two poundsof muscle and lose 3.5 pounds of fat withintwo months. Beyond boosting confidence, weight training can also boost a woman’smetabolic rate, making it possible to burnmore calories throughout the day - evenwhen resting. Tooo Tiredd forr Cardio? Timing is everythingwhen it comes to engaging in cardiovascu-lar exercises that can actually make you feelmore energized by helping to improve oxy-gen consumption by the body and makingthe heart and lungs stronger. An optimaltime to do cardio is before you may be tootired from a long day at work - or afteryou’ve recharged with a nutritious meal orsnack.
The best kind of cardio to do dependson what won’t be so unappealing that you’llavoid it completely. According to TheNational Osteoporosis Foundation, womencan especially benefit from cardio exercisesthat help build bone density such as walk-
ing, jogging, stair climbing, elliptical ortreadmill training, jumping rope, playingtennis, dancing and hiking. Nott Tooo Old: Improved physical capabilitiesof today’s aging population have broughtabout the belief that exercise is the only real“fountain of youth” serving to shatter age-related stereotypes that used to define a per-son‘s ability to engage in exercise.
A study of healthy adults between theages of 60 and 72 participating in a standard12-week resistance program showed signif-icant improvement in the strength of seniorscan be achieved with weight training; andthat improvements in muscular strengthmay be the best way to reduce or preventthe incidence of injury. Enhanced strengthand endurance gained from weight trainingand cardiovascular exercises can also makedaily lifestyle activities easier and less tir-ing. Nott Tooo Goodd too bee True: The InternationalOsteoporosis Foundation emphasizes thatpeople who exercise can build and maintainbone density, slow down the process thatleads to osteoporosis and improve balance, strength and agility.
The American Heart Association alsohighly recommends exercising for weightloss, increased longevity and reduced riskof heart disease, high blood pressure, dia-betes, strokes and certain types of cancer.According to The Mayo Clinic, improvedmental health is yet another benefit of exer-cise, as it helps ward off depression byincreasing serotonin levels in the brain.

Miami-based Carnival Cruise Lines andthe Port of Miami have announced that theline’s newest ship, the 130,000-ton CarnivalBreeze, will launch year-round six- andeight-day Caribbean cruises from Miamibeginning in November 2012.
The 3,690-passenger Carnival Breeze willbe the sixth Carnival Cruise Lines shiphomeported in Miami. Collectively, thesevessels are expected to carry roughly 1 mil-lion guests annually — the most of anyCarnival homeport.
“The Port of Miami is a long-standing andvalued partner and we’re pleased to buildupon that relationship by basing the CarnivalBreeze in Miami year-round,” said GerryCahill, Carnival president and CEO. “Ourcompany has been based in Miami since itwas founded nearly 40 years ago and wecan’t wait to welcome this exciting and inno-vative new ship to our hometown.”
“The cruise industry supports thousands ofjobs in our community. This newest additionto our port’s fleet builds upon our longstand-ing partnership with Carnival,” said Miami-Dade County Commission chair JoeMartinez. “Miami-Dade County looks for-ward to welcoming the Breeze to the Port ofMiami.”
Port director Bill Johnson noted that Carnival
is the Port of Miami’s largest cruise line.“The Carnival Breeze adds to an already
distinguished fleet that includes some of themost modern and exciting ships on the seastoday,” Johnson said.
As Carnival’s newest “Fun Ship,”Carnival Breeze will offer a host of excitinginnovations, including expansive top-deckareas such as WaterWorks, an aqua park withexhilarating water slides and other attrac-tions; SportSquare, an open-air recreationcomplex with a ropes course, mini-golf, andoutdoor fitness area; The Lanai, a wrap-around promenade with whirlpools extend-ing over the ship’s sides, and a 270-square-
foot poolside LED screen displaying movies, and other programming.
Carnival fans can learn about the CarnivalBreeze’s many features and view its colorful newstateroom designs at <www.carnival.com/breeze>.
As part of its innovative Miami-basedcruise schedule, Carnival Breeze will offer ayear-round three-port, six-day cruise pro-gram operating Sundays-Saturdays begin-ning Dec. 2, 2012.
This schedule will be offered on alternatingweeks and will feature visits to three popularports of call: Grand Turk, BWI; Ocho Rios,Jamaica, and Nassau, The Bahamas
Expanding upon its role as the leader in
Caribbean cruising, Carnival Breeze will
offer two distinctly different four-port, eight-
day itineraries year-round from the Port of
Miami operating Saturday-Sunday beginning
Nov. 24, 2012.
Each of the eight-day cruises from Miami
will provide guests with ample opportunities
to sample the best that the Caribbean has to
offer, from sunning and relaxing on gorgeous
beaches to shopping for duty-free bargains
and savoring delectable island cuisine.
The Saturday-to-Sunday rotation is partic-

across two weekends. The schedule includes
an eight-day southern Caribbean itinerary that
will feature Grand Turk, La Romana

meeting, Rolando Aedo, GMCVBExecutive Vice President and ChiefMarketing Officer, explained the GMCVBhas been working closely with the city’sTourism and Marketing Council to “putSunny Isles Beach on the map.”
“Sunny Isles Beach is part of an amazingdestination with its own unique brand recog-nized globally thanks in part to Ibis Romero, who spent many years working with theGreater Miami Convention and VisitorsBureau,” Aedo said. He went on to providean update on the state of the industry includ-ing good news about a “record-setting2010.”
RECORD-SETTING STATISTICS“In 2010, we had record overnight stays
(international and for conventions) and totalexpenditure records of more than $18 bil-lion…Visitors came through [MiamiInternational Airport] in record numbers, fueling our industry and bringing a lot ofguests to Sunny Isles Beach…There was asignificant increase in both domestic andinternational arrivals.
“The Port of Miami, benefitting the com-munity as a whole, also saw record growth in2010 driven by new ships…there were a lotmore cruise passengers and every ship is likea ‘floating hotel.’
“Regarding the convention and develop-ment tax – revenue from tourism is a main[economic] driver for Sunny Isles Beachand Greater Miami. The convention anddevelopment tax is the only tax levied inMiami-Dade providing a good indicator ofthe increase in collection of revenue…thatnumber is up by close to 17 percent. Just ayear and a half ago, coming out of a reces-sion, predictions were for it to be flat – sothe fact that it’s up is quite an accomplish-ment attributable to the industry and localhoteliers.
“To gauge how Sunny Isles Beach hotelsare doing, we look at occupancy and roomrates…The occupancy and revenue peravailable room went up dramatically and for2011 we’re continuing to see record growth. The fact that rooms rates held steady from2010 to 2011 also speaks to the strength ofthe Sunny Isles Beach brand as well as strongnumbers and good growth rate of overnightvisitors.
“Numbers for January 2010 based on datacompiled by Smith Travel have also trackedthe city’s success. Occupancy went up overthree percent; room rates [held steady]; androom revenues were also up close to threepercent. There were 617,000 visitors whospent one night generating close to $700 mil-lion in economic impact.
“This is great news for Sunny Isles Beachand speaks to the amazing things that have
happened here. Ninety-six percent of visi-tors expressed their intent to return and thissatisfaction speaks to the city’s [exception-al] hotels, parks and beautification projects -indicating tourists and residents appreciate[the city’s amenities].”
PREFERRED DESTINATIONProviding a snapshot of markets bringing
visitors to Sunny Isles Beach and surround-ing communities, Aedo noted, “New Yorkgenerates one-third of all tourism.” This sta-tistic is especially appreciated by newSunny Isles Beach City Manager Alan J.Cohen, who formerly served as Mayor ofIthaca, New York from 1996 to 2003. Cohenalso formerly managed a restaurant – one ofthe industries the GMCVB focuses on pro-moting in South Florida.
According to Aedo, Chicago andPhiladelphia also have a big impact on localtourism. “Domestic visitors represent 52 per-cent and international visitors represent 48percent - we have the highest percentage ofinternational visitors of any destination inthe country,” he said. “People from aroundthe world love to call Greater Miami theirholiday destination
“Brazil and Canada are also top marketsthat play a very important role in the successof Sunny Isles Beach…Brazilians spend themost and that market is up by 50 percent, trending upwards because their unemploy-ment rate is low…Brazil is our first billiondollar market – bringing more than a halfmillion visitors and generating over $1.1 bil-lion in expenditures. For Sunny Isles Beachand Greater Miami, ‘all eyes are on Brazil’and we’re working closely with IbisRomero, your hotels and your [city staff]team to make sure Sunny Isles Beach gets itsshare of all customers.”
Aedo reiterated Miami InternationalAirport is a primary driver for tourismgrowth as 98 percent of all visitors comeinto South Florida via air services. “Thereare now new flights from Russia, Germany,Italy, France, Spain, Brazil and even theCayman Islands,” he said. “In 2011, thegrowth of our airport hasn’t stopped…Thereis also new service from Amsterdam, theUK, Barcelona and Lisbon. One of the mostexciting things we’ll be seeing in June is thenew A380 Jumbo Jet that will be flying intoMiami. The influx of passengers as well asthe public relations and excitement sur-rounding the jet will [help put GreaterMiami in the limelight].”
WIN-WIN PARTNERSHIP According to Aedo, the city’s partnership
with the Greater Miami Convention andVisitors Bureau provides access to theGMCVB’s international network of offices.
“We have branches in Miami and satelliteoffices in Washington and throughout theworld that help us when we go on missionsto promote sales and activities,” he said.“By virtue of our affiliation, these officesare all partners with the city so Sunny IslesBeach can take advantage of this network.
“The GMCVB also continuously con-ducts marketing programs – devoting a lotof time in key markets to build global andregional marketing programs. The GMCVBis behind the Miami Spice restaurant cam-paign; the Miami Spa program; andMuseum and Romance months…We devel-op incremental specialty marketing pro-grams during slower months to help bringyear-round visitors to your hotels andrestaurants.
“We also have a bevy of GMCVB publi-cations, websites and tours…Sunny IslesBeach is a key part of our message - receiv-ing dedicated pages in our editorial publica-tions…We consider Sunny Isles Beach to bean integral part of everything we do…TheGMCVB recognizes [achieving success] isall about the key players, the product, thepassion and partnerships. Thank you for giv-ing us the privilege to represent Sunny IslesBeach around the world. The city haschanged a lot over the years. It’s an amazingplace that’s better than ever and you’re mak-ing our job easier to promote the area.”
At the conclusion of Aedo’s presentation,Sunny Isles Beach Mayor Norman S.Edelcup noted, “One of the great partner-ships we’ve forged is with the GreaterMiami Convention and Visitors Bureau. Weenjoy being part of the GMCVB’s overallefforts – it’s a ‘win-win situation’ for all ofus. We appreciate everything the GMCVBdoes as Ibis Romero continues to work withhotels and businesses to help promoteSunny Isles Beach and make us famousthroughout the world as ‘Florida’s Riviera.’”
JOINING FORCES On Dec. 14, 2006, the City Commission
adopted the resolution approving the part-nership between the city and the GreaterMiami Convention & Visitors Bureau(GMCVB).
Mayor Norman S. Edelcup explained,“During a ceremony to dedicate a beachaccess park to [the late] Bill Lone, [formerpresident of the Sunny Isles Beach ResortAssociation] I had the opportunity to meetthe senior vice president of marketing andtourism for the Greater Miami Conventionand Visitors Bureau. We discussed the pos-sibility of partnering with GMCVB to assistthe city with its marketing.”
During the Dec. 14, 2006 Commissionmeeting, it was announced Ibis Romero (aGMCVB employee at the time) would beassigned to help promote Sunny Isles Beachas a tourist destination..
Discussing the benefits of partnering withthe GMCVB, Mayor Edelcup noted, “The
GMCVB is an internationally recognizedentity with links to various marketinggroups and sites that can amplify the city’sidentity as a preferred tourist destination topotential tourists, business persons andinternational travelers.
“Sunny Isles Beach has become a havenfor local tourists and international travelers -thus, this is a great opportunity for the cityto maximize its exposure to local vacation-ers and the world.”
By partnering with the Greater MiamiConvention & Visitors Bureau, Sunny IslesBeach benefits even more directly from themission of the private, not-for-profit salesand marketing organization to “attract, encourage and induce all persons and organ-izations to visit Greater Miami and itsBeaches for conventions, business andpleasure.” Acting on behalf of its members,inter-local partners and citizens of Miami-Dade County, the GMCVB markets and pro-motes all segments of the community as apreferred destination.
The GMCVB also has a Tourism SalesDivision focused on increasing leisure trav-el and its economic impact on GreaterMiami and the Beaches by working with thetravel trade to promote the destinationworldwide through partnerships with air-lines, travel agents, tour wholesalers andtrade organizations. GMCVB staff assiststravel planners in developing tour programsfor individuals and groups, as well as incen-tive travel programs.
The GMCVB Marketing and TourismDepartment is organized into three geo-graphic market-based teams: Europe/Asia,USA/Canada/Caribbean and LatinAmerica/Spain. These three interdiscipli-nary teams, led by the sales director for eachterritory, include public relations, advertis-ing and publishing to assist in planning andimplementing comprehensive strategies foreach market.
The Division annually takes GreaterMiami and the Beaches’ message to thou-sands of travel industry representatives viapartnership programs with GMCVB mem-bers. Key industry buyers experience thedestination first-hand throughout the year indozens of organized familiarization (FAM)tours. The Division also meets with hundredsof top producers at trade shows on a one-on-one basis to identify their product needs.
The City of Sunny Isles Beach and theSunny Isles Beach Tourism and MarketingCouncil have launched the ““SSuunnnnyy IIsslleessBBeeaacchh SSttaayyccaattiioonn PPaacckkaaggee” targetingFloridians to come and experience a resortvacation in their own backyard. BY RICHARD C. SCHULMANCity Historian
That day setapart each year, first by customand later bystatute, for thepurpose of honor-ing the memory ofthe soldiers whofought in the CivilWar, is a succes-
sor to Decoration Day which originated
with the southern states when flowerswere strewn over the soldiers’ graves.
After hostilities between the Unionand Confederate forces had ceased, thewidows and friends of the slain south-erners showed their sincere love andgratitude to their fallen heroes in thisfashion. This was not confined to con-federate graves only.
These fine women of the South alsodecorated the graves of the northerndead. The news of this touching tributeflashed across the North as a ray of newlight and hope for brotherhood, and in
1868, General John A. Logan, thenCommander in Chief of the Grand Armyof the Republic, showed his deep admi-ration of this symbolic custom by issu-ing an order designating May 30th ofthat year as the one on which all postsof the G.A.R. should commemorate thedead of the Civil War by decoratingtheir graves with floral bouquets andwreaths.
Action was soon taken by the legisla-tures of various states and the 30th ofMay was set-aside for that purpose inthe majority of states.
