Men’s Breakfast, October 27 Join us at 7:00 a.m. at the Activity Building Sidewalk

The Men of the Church gather on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 7:00 a.m. for a time of fellowship and study. Join us for biscuits, coffee, and conversation on the sidewalk in front of the Activity Building.

Highland Worship Online There are several ways to access worship:

• Click the link in the Sunday morning email;

• Go to Highland’s website and find the “Highland Worship Online” page;

• Subscribe to Highland’s YouTube chan-nel where the worship videos are posted (Highland PCWS).

On our Worship Online page, there are links for the Bulletin, a virtual “Friendship Pad,” as well as a virtual “offering plate.”

Midweek Morning Prayer Wednesdays at 8:00 a.m., via Zoom Join us for a brief time of prayer and reflection on Wednesday mornings. Led by various

staff members, this 30 minute gathering offers time to read and reflect briefly on scrip-

ture, and to lift up prayers for the world, for the church, for those in need, and for those

concerns or joys shared by participants in this gathering.

Highland’s November Food Pantry Needs For the month of November we are in need of healthy

canned soup and stuffing mix. The food pantry supports the children of Moore Elementary School. Thank you!

Gourds of Gratitude Pickup Sunday, October 24, 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Finding blessings in this strange season can be a challenge, so to help you collect those blessings, Highland’s Christian Education Committee has a special gift for all of our church family and friends—Gourds of Gratitude! A Gourd of Gratitude (a.k.a. pumpkin) can be used to adorn your Thanksgiving table, your front porch, or some other place to remind you of the many things for which you are grateful. Then you and/or your family can add things that have been a blessing in this season, things that fill your heart with gratitude.

If you have already reserved your Gourd of Gratitude, you may pick it up on Sunday, October 24, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the parking lot.

(*Note: If you are unable to pick up your Gourd of Gratitude on October 24, it will be available for pick up in the Activity Building on October 25–27, 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. If you are homebound and need to have your "Gourd" delivered to you, contact the church office, 336-724-6303.)

Advent Devotion Writers and Artists Needed We are beginning to think towards Advent and Highland’s annual Advent devotion booklet. Once again we invite Highland members and friends of all ages to join in and share their thoughts, prayers, scriptural insights, and memories on the season of

Advent. If you are interested in serving as a devotion writer, or artist, or are curious to know what is involved please contact Courtney Stevens.

New Member Class, Sunday, October 31 We will be holding an in-person, outdoor class for those interested in membership at Highland on Sunday, October 31, following worship. If you are interested, contact Debbie Layman for more information. This is a great way to learn more about Highland and to connect more deeply with God and this church family.

Fall Poverty Book Read Fourth Mondays, at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom Our Poverty Book Group invites all to join in the discussion of our fall book read. Our book is Broke in America: Seeing, Understanding, and Ending U.S. Poverty by Joanne Samuel Goldblum, the founder of the National Diaper Bank Network, and Colleen Shaddox, a journalist.

The book, published in 2021, offers an eye-opening and galvanizing look at life in poverty in this country and how the pandemic exacerbated the divides we have often overlooked. Each chapter features action items we can use to combat poverty, both in Winston-Salem and nationwide. Contact Debbie Layman to participate.

The Present Word, 9:15–10:15 a.m., Available on Zoom or In-person This season, the Present Word lessons focus on acts of worship and praise that celebrate both God’s divine attributes and God’s actions on behalf of the whole created order. This class is facilitated by several class members. The Zoom link can be found on the Highland website and in the Sunday morning emails. Location: Ardmore Room and Zoom

Elective Classes, Zoom Only, Classes begin at 9:00 a.m. The following two elective classes are offered via Zoom only, therefore they begin at 9:00 a.m. so if participants would like to attend Highland’s in-person worship, they have suf-ficient time to get to Highland for the 10:30 a.m. service.

Short Stories by Jesus: The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi This class is hosted by the Lectionary Café Class. In her book, Short Stories by Jesus, Amy-Jill Levine shows just how controversial and up-ending Jesus’ parables were to his origi-nal audience. Facilitated by Mike Culler, we utilize brief films of Levine that lead into great discussion. Sunday, October 24 will be the last Sunday in this series. On October 31, the Lectionary Café will resume their explorations using the Revised Common Lectionary. The Zoom link for this class will be located on the church website and can be found in the Sunday morning emails.

Materiality as Resistance What is Materiality for the Faithful in a World in Crisis? Sundays, October 24–November 21, 9:00–10:00 a.m. via Zoom In his timely book, Materiality as Resistance, renowned theologian and bibli-cal scholar Walter Brueggemann reminds us that while God is personal, God is never private, and our faith can and should make a difference in the world. God calls us, as persons of faith, to work with God to change the world according to God’s purposes.

Materiality refers to understanding one’s place in the world as a physical being, respond-

Lunch & Learn: Reading Biblical Literature The New Testament, Thursdays, 12:00–1:00 p.m. via Zoom Join us at midday on Thursdays as we explore the New Testament. This study of scripture explores major themes, with presentations provided by Dr. Craig Koester, a New Testament professor at Lu-ther Seminary. Each week features a video, followed by group dis-cussion, as we seek to learn and grow together. Randy Harris and Curtis Patterson facilitate the class. If you would like to take part, please contact Randy Harris.

ing to the needs of others who are also material. This concept grows out of an acknowl-edgement of God as the Creator of a material world, a world into which Jesus, the Christ, became incarnate–that is, material–and proceeded to respond to the material needs that confronted him. Brueggemann identifies five dimensions of materiality: money, food, the body, time and place.

Our discussions, facilitated by Debbie Layman, will invite us to reconsider how we use ma-terial aspects of our faith to spur moral thought and action. For more information on this upcoming 5-week elective, contact Heather Ferguson or Debbie Layman.

with letter recognition and counting); the kids are loveable and masked, and the impact is great. If you can share an hour or two of your time with precious children of God, please let us know, and we will share information about next steps (such as being ap-proved by the school district). These kids are truly excited every time they get to work with someone one on one; they just love to learn. Contact Emily Collins or Debbie Lay-man with interest or questions.

Youth Fellowship on Sundays Join Us!!

October 24 11:15 a.m.–12:30 p.m. We are joining with our Highland family to share in the bbq fellowship meal after worship. We hope you have made your reservation for a meal and plan to join!

October 31 11:30–1:00 p.m. We have changed our plans a bit and are going to share a joint youth fellowship time for middlers and senior highs. We’ll order a pizza lunch and have Halloween activities to get everyone in the spirit of the day.

Senior High Beach Retreat November 19–21 We have missed many things about our ministry together, and having time away together is perhaps what we miss the most. With support of families, the Youth and Young Adult Ministry Committee, Highland's Covid Taskforce, and Session, we are thrilled to plan for traveling again! We know that no activity is completely safe, but we recognize that

community is an important part of life that we share. For this upcoming opportunity, we will require vaccinations and ask for a negative test before departing. Details are forthcoming, but save the dates for now, and get ready for a weekend of reconnection, rest, renewal, and worship.
