The current socio-economic situation of Luxembourg

6

For 2 residents out of 3, Luxembourg is facing a crisis

Results are amplified in the population group of “Luxembourg citizenship holders”(77%)

Foreign residents and cross-border workers show a more positive perception of the current

situation, with however half of them believing that Luxembourg is engulfed in a crisis.

Half of the young respondents believe that Luxembourg is facing a crisis. However, roughly 75%

resident in the age bracket 50+ make this assessment.

Though largely believed of facing a crisis, Luxembourg is perceived by 88% of respondents as being in « a

better situation than elsewhere ».

2/3 of residents believe that Luxembourg is resisting well to the current worldwide economic slowdown.

Luxembourgers’ opinions is more negative (68%) than foreign residents’ (80%) or cross-border workers’.

Eventually, even if the situation is widely considered as being « better than elsewhere », the situation

cannot be considered as being « very good ». Again, Luxembourg are less inclined than foreign residents

or cross-border workers to evaluated the economic situation as being “very good”.

A general overview of the economy in Luxembourg

9

Residents and cross-border workers largely agree, about 90%, that Luxembourg could carry out more

infrastructure projects by spending more wisely.

Only 60% of the surveyed residents agreed on the fact that the education system is operating well

taking into account the funds allocated to public education. In general, the luxembourgish citizens

have a more positive opinion about our education system (63%). In contrary, foreigners (54%) and

cross-border workers (47%) are less enchanted by our education system.

56% of the residents consider the duration of the public construction works as insufficient.

Luxembourgish citizens (66%) are more concerned by this issue than foreigners (52%). An interesting

fact to be noted is that residents with a higher education level consider the duration of public

construction works as more bothersome. Among cross-border workers the opinions are mixed, 48%

consider the duration as too long while 41% believe the contrary.

Residents and cross-border workers agree on the fact that economic growth will be generated by

productivity gains rather than employment growth. Similarly, public funds invested in research and

development foster the diversification of Luxembourg's economy.

Analogously, poverty could be alleviated more effectively by targeting more selectively the

beneficiaries.

Finally, 59% of the residents consider that the public sector could perform its tasks more effectively

by sub-contracting certain administrative functions and services to external specialists.
