In Europe, the construction sector is one of the most resource-intensive industries. If you look at the complete life cycle of a building, from raw material extraction, production of construction materials, the construction process itself, through to the use and maintenance of the building, in the construction sector is responsible for:

· 60 % of total material use, · 30% of waste production, · 42% of carbon emissions, · 58% of water consumption. (Source: UK Green Building Council)

This is why energy efficiency is just as important as the durability and recyclability of products and systems. The use of high-performance insulation such as CALOSTAT® materials is recommended for meeting energy efficiency regulations such as the 2018 "Minimum Level of Energy Efficiency" standard.

CALOSTAT® is a pure mineral insulation material, consisting mainly of silicon dioxide. It contains no fungicides, algicides, binders, or flame retardants. The high-performance insulation material is vapor diffusion permeable but does not absorb liquid water.

Because of the material properties and the ecological and economic benefits, CALOSTAT® is recommended for a broad range of applications inside and outside the building envelope, such as interior insulation, cavity insulation for load-bearing walls (veneered, prefabricated composites) and even for the thermal insulation of various facade systems for residential, industrial, office, and administrative buildings.

Issue Description Intention Positive impact of CALOSTAT® on certification targets

Hea 01 Visual Comfort

Assuring adequate daylighting at the working place to improve user comfort and health.

Verification of the daylight levels happens either by a daylighting simulation or by measurements. CALOSTAT® contributes to good daylight levels by decreasing the required thickness of external walls.*

Hea 02 Indoor Air Quality

Requirements for the VOC-content of building products are specified, to ensure a healthy environment for all users. After construction activities are finished, air quality testing is performed to evaluate the indoor air quality as built.

CALOSTAT® has a very low pollutant content and contributes towards a healthy indoor environment.

Hea 04 Thermal Comfort

A comfortable working environment requires certain temperature and humidity levels during usage. This credit evaluates the the thermal comfort as designed.

A good thermal comfort is largely dependant on the insulating layer and the achieved interior surface tem-peratures. CALOSTAT® enables the heating- and cooling systems to provide an excellent level of thermal comfort.

Ene 01 Reduction of energy usage

The energy performance of the building is evaluated by comparing the actual building to a notional building constructed according to local code. The assessed per-formance metrics are energy consumption, primary energy consumption and CO2-emissions.

Utilizing high-performance insulation such as CALOSTAT® reduces heating and cooling demand and contributes to achieving good energy efficiency in line with the local national calculation methodology (NCM).

Mat 01 Life Cycle Impacts

By performing a life cycle assessment (LCA) a wholistic, life-cycle-oriented design approach is followed. The goal is to reduce both the environmental impact and the con-sumption of finite ressources during the entire lifecycle of the building.

Performing a LCA based on as-built data.Environmental product declarations (EPDs) supply additional infor-mation for individual building products. CALOSTAT® provides an EPD.

Mat 02 Environmental Product Declarations (EPD)

The environmental product claims provided by manu-facturers or other industry sources are often inconsistent and incomplete. By utilizing verified data, the validity and potential assistance offered by performing an LCA can be significantly improved.

CALOSTAT® is covered by a compliant EPD that achieves all available EPD points.

Mat 03 Responsible sourcing of construction products

This credit promotes the usage of responsibly sourced building products. Overexploitation and inefficient usage account for major environmental damage and waste of ressources.

Construction products have to be acquired from sus-tainable sources. A score for products used is cal culated by checking if the product supplier operates an envi-ronmental management system, such as ISO 14001. Evonik Industries operates such an EMS.

Wst 01 Construction Waste Management

The construction sector accounts for the majority of the waste produced worldwide. By focusing on the recycling of construction waste, resource consumption and landfill growth can be limited.

Pure products such as CALOSTAT® contribute towards good recycling rates of demolition waste.

Wst 06 Design for disassembly and adaptability

By accounting for future adaptions and refurbishments in a building’s design, waste and cost associated with such changes can be reduced. The usage of materials that are easy to disassemble is a further step towards a circular economy.

CALOSTAT® is mechanically assembled and mounted. This allows for easy disassembly and potential re-use.

CALOSTAT® HAS POSITIVE INFLUENCE ON FOUR OF NINE CATEGORIES

BREEAM was the first of the major sustainability rating systems

and was initially developed for the UK market. Since then it has grown significantly, providing schemes for new-construction, refurbishment, in-use and infra-structure projects both on a

national and international scale. A building’s sustainability perfor-mance is assessed in nine catego-ries, for each of which the actual performance is compared against pre-defined targets.

THE INTENT OF THIS ISSUE IS TO ENSURE, THAT ALL WORKSPACES ARE SUPPLIED WITH ADEQUATE AMOUNTS OF DAYLIGHT. SUFFICIENT DAYLIGHTING INCREASES EMPLOYEE PRODUCTIVITY AND DECREASES SICK DAYS WHILE SAVING ENERGY OTHER-WISE USED ON ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING.

To ensure compliance with the requirements of this issue, a computer-based daylighting simulation is carried out that accounts for room geometry, wall thickness, reflectivity of the materials as well as local shading to ensure an accurate portrayal of the room as it will be built.

PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICSCALOSTAT® has an exceedingly low thermal conductivity of 0.019 W/(mK). This allows much thinner constructions compared to regular insulations. The reduced wall thickness increases daylight availability in the building, since a wider angle of light can enter the room. Thick constructions can lead to a heavily decreased daylight availability similar to the effect embrasures create in historic buildings.

EVIDENCE The information required for the daylight simulation can be found in the technical spec sheet. The daylight simulation is based on the architectural floor plans; no evidence specific to CALOSTAT® has to be provided. All documents can be downloaded from the website www.calostat.com.

THIS ISSUE AIMS TO REDUCE INDOOR POLLU-TANT EMISSIONS FROM BUILDING PRODUCTS SUCH AS ADHESIVES AND VARNISHES.

BREEAM imposes limits to the maximum permissible emissions of formaldehyde, TVOC and carcinogens. Insulation materials for example are limited to a maxi-mum of 0.06 mg/m³ of formaldehyde, 1.0 mg/m³ of TVOC and 0.001 mg/m³ of cat. 1A and 1B carcino-gens. By providing a healthy environment worker productivity is expected to rise and sick days to decline. Further points in this issue can be achieved by carrying out air quality testing before occupancy, to validate that no building products with inadmissible pollutant emissions have been installed.

PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICSCALOSTAT® has been assessed against the requirements of the Material Health category of the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ product standard and been awarded Plati-num. This encompasses low pollutant emission levels. Emission testing has shown VOC-levels of 0.04 mg/m³ after three days and 0.018 mg/m³ after 28 days –CALOSTAT® consequently fulfills all requirements of this BREEAM issue and contributes to creating a healthy working and living environment.

EVIDENCE Evidence for this issue is comprised of emission testing protocols conducted by eco-INSTITUT Germany GmbH in accordance with AgBB-scheme 2015. It covers VOC, carcinogen and formalde-hyde emissions over a testing period of three and 28 days.

A HEALTHY WORKING ENVIRONMENT PLACES STRICT REQUIREMENTS ON THE LOCAL TEMPERATURES TO ENSURE ADEQUATE THERMAL COMFORT.

BREEAM requires a confirmation of thermal comfort in accord-ance with ISO 7730 category B in accordance with CIBSE Guide A Environmental Design. This is done via a dynamic thermal simulation of multiple exemplary rooms.

BREEAM ISSUE HEA 04 Thermal Comfort

PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICSDue to its exceptionally low conduction properties, CALOSTAT® is predestined to provide a very good thermal comfort. With a lambda value of 0.019 W/(mK), CALOSTAT® ensures minimal heat transfers through the building’s shell. A further cause for discomfort is a large difference in temperature between the room air and the radiant temperature of walls and ceilings. The low thermal conductivity of CALOSTAT® effectively counteracts this by aligning wall temperatures with the room air temperature.

Another advantageous characteristic of CALOSTAT® is its con-sistent thermal conductivity, largely independent of the tem - pe rature. While many conventional insulation materials face a rapid degradation of insulation capabilities when heated in sum-mer, the thermal insulation of CALOSTAT® is nearly consistent.

EVIDENCE The energy model is based on design documentation by the architects and their design team. If the design docu-mentation does not include heat transmission coefficients, the technical specifications of CALOSTAT® can be found on the technical data sheet available on www.calostat.com.

THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT ACCOUNTS FOR AROUND 40 % OF THE UK’S NATIONAL CARBON FOOTPRING. WITH THIS LARGE A FOOTPRINT, IMPROVING THE ENERGETIC EFFICIENCY IN THE BUILDING SECTOR HAS THE NEC-ESSARY LEVERAGE TO GREATLY DECREASE THE OVERALL ENVI-RONMENTAL IMPACT.

Reducing the CO2 footprint of a build-ing can happen in a few different ways: increasing component efficiency, de creasing consumption by changes of habit, incorporating renewable energy sources into the building design or improving the buildings shell. BREEAM judges the energetic perfor-mance by calculating the percentage improvements of the actual building against a notional building and compar-ing these savings against modelled building stock. The analyzed metrics are heating and cooling demand, primary energy consumption and the total resulting CO2-eq emissions.

EVIDENCE The energy model is based on design documentation by the architects and their design team. If the design docu-mentation does not include heat transmission coefficients, the technical specifications of CALOSTAT® can be found on the technical data sheet available on www.calostat.com.

BREEAM ISSUE ENE 01 Reduction of Energy Use

PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICSCALOSTAT® excels in this credit due to its low thermal conduction of only 0.019 W/(mK). As a very high performing insulating material, CALOSTAT® reduces heat transmission losses by up to 50 % at the same thickness of the insulating layer compared to a regular insulating material. These reduced transmission losses are directly translated into energy savings and a potentially great energetic performance of the proposed building.

Besides the high performance in a winter case, CALOSTAT® further improves energy savings during the summer case. Due to its low temperature amplitude ratio, temperature fluctuations of the outside air are reduced on the interior of the building.

Overall, CALOSTAT® as a high performance insulation material is a great choice for improving the overall energetic performance of a building, for example in the frame of a BREEAM certification.

EVIDENCE The assessment parameters necessary for the LCA calculations can be found in the EPD of CALOSTAT. It is verified by EN 15804 and covers a Cradle-to-Gate scope with scenarios for disposing or recycling the product.

BREEAM ISSUE MAT 01 Life cycle impacts

PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICSDue to its low environmental impact, CALOSTAT® has the premise of decreasing the overall LCA impacts. Based on its low conduction coefficient of only 0.019 W/(mK), up to 50 % of layer strength can be saved while achieving the same U-value. This reduction in product volume correlates with a decrease in the over-all environmental impact associated with material extraction, product manufacture and transport. CALOSTAT® is covered by an EPD with a Cradle-to-Gate scope plus scenario for disposal or recycling of the product. The environmental impact largely stems from the manufacturing process – a dedicated recy-cling effort allows savings of 48 % to 91 % of the baseline emissions.

A LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT (LCA) ANALYZES THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF CONSTRUC-TION PRODUCTS OVER ITS ENTIRE LIFE CYCLE, CONSIDERING PERFORMANCE INDICATORS SUCH AS CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS, WATER USAGE AND PRODUCED WASTE.

A LCA should be carried out in the design stages to inform building owner and design team on potential measures that may reduce the buildings environmental footprint. BREEAM encourages building owners to carry out a LCA and to minimize the buildings ecological footprint based on the findings.

11

Page 12: SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION - Isolation · the construction industry with an attractive alternative to conventional insulation materials, which is ecologically and economically sustainable

ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCT DECLARATIONS ARE USED TO SHOW A PRODUCT’S OVERALL IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT.

Multiple indicators, such as the primary energy consumption, the global warming potential or the equivalent carbon emis-sions, provide an overview with the envi-ronmental effects associated with the product. By including products covered by an EPD in the project, the overall project’s impact can be assessed more accurately and the awareness over corresponding environmental factors can be increased.

EVIDENCE

The necessary certificates for this issue is available on www.calostat.com in the menu "Product Information".

BREEAM ISSUE MAT 02 Environmental impacts from construction products

PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICSCALOSTAT® is covered by an EPD with Cradle-to-Gate scope plus scenarios for disposal or recycling of the product. The EPD follows the requirements set out by ISO 14025 and EN 15804 and fully meets the requirements of this BREEAM issue. By including CALOSTAT®, the design team can increase the accuracy of the building level LCA and therefore help to reduce overall life cycle impacts caused by the building. In accordance with the calculation approach used, CALOSTAT® achieves the maximum of 1.5 EPD points.

12

Page 13: SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION - Isolation · the construction industry with an attractive alternative to conventional insulation materials, which is ecologically and economically sustainable

RESPONSIBLY SOURCED CONSTRUC-TION PRODUCTS INCREASINGLY BECOME A NECESSITY WITH DWINDLING GLOBAL RESOURCES AND INCREASING OVERALL CONSUMPTION.

BREEAM rewards product manufacturers that adhere to third-party recognized environmental management systems such as ISO 14001 or the BES 6001 framework standard.

EVIDENCE

The necessary evidence for this issue is the ISO 14001 Certificate of Evonik Indus-tries AG, available on www.evonik.com in the menu "Responsibility – Enviroment – Management System".

BREEAM ISSUE MAT 03 Responsible sourcing of construction products

PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICSEvonik Industries AG is certified according to ISO 14001 by DQS GmbH. The certificate covers manufacturing of the basic chemical ingredients, manufacturing, development, marketing and sales of the building products. In accordance with the BREEAM methodology, this allows for a RCS sum-mary score level of 2 RCS points to be attained for each Evonik product used on site.

13

Page 14: SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION - Isolation · the construction industry with an attractive alternative to conventional insulation materials, which is ecologically and economically sustainable

THE INCREASE IN GLOBAL CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY IS LEADING TO AN INCREASING SCARCITY OF RESOURCES IN THIS SECTOR. A SUSTAINABLE APPROACH TO RESOURCE MANAGEMENT CALLS FOR INCREASED USAGE OF RECYCLING OPPORTUNITIES.

One such opportunity is diverting construction waste from landfills; in 2015 construction activities accounted for 30 % of total generated waste in the UK. BREEAM encourages construction waste to be reused or otherwise recycled in order to reduce the amount sent to landfills.

EVIDENCE Evidence for this issue has to be provided by the dis-posal company, for example in the form of weighing receipts. No product specific evidence is required.

BREEAM ISSUE WST 01 Construction waste management

PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICSIf CALOSTAT® insulation boards are available in a pure and unmixed form, they can be fully reused to create new insulation boards. Additionally, CALOSTAT® has been designed to be recycled for later usage such as the rigid core for vacuum insulation panels. With these qualities, CALOSTAT® can be considered fully recyclable and can contribute to this credit.

CALOSTAT® boards are supplied on wooden pallets by the manufacturer. These pallets may be handed in to the supplier of construction materials to be returned to the manufacturer and put back into usagehence no construction waste is created by the transport of the insulation boards.

14

Page 15: SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION - Isolation · the construction industry with an attractive alternative to conventional insulation materials, which is ecologically and economically sustainable

A BUILDING THAT IS CONSTRUCTED TODAY WILL LIKELY FACE CHANGES OF USAGE, REFURBISHMENTS AND CHANGING TENANTS IN ITS LIFETIME.

The design should therefore consider the potential for future adaption and maximize the ability to reclaim and reuse materials. By employing materials that are easy to disassemble and reinstall, both waste and cost associ-ated with future works are reduced. In addition, the dis-mantled elements may be recycled or re-used in other projects, furthering the principle of a circular economy.

EVIDENCE Evidence for this issue is typically issued by the architect in the form of an adaption strategy. There are no universal assembly instructions for CALOSTAT®, instead these are individually adapted for each project. These instructions can be used as part of the adaption strategy, if applicable.

BREEAM ISSUE WST 06 Design for disassembly and adaptability

PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICSCALOSTAT® has been designed with future recy-cling or re-use in mind. CALOSTAT® boards are always mechanically mounted, i. e. with screws and dowels or clamping fixtures. Even newer composite products, such as CALOSTAT® Sand-wich boards, are joint by mechanical means such as sewing. In this manner, CALOSTAT® can be completely disassembled and re-used. This con-tributes a vital part towards designing the enve-lope along the requirements of this issue.
