Approximately one third of flows remains excessive pollution

10% of the lengths of all streams are found water unpolluted or only slightly polluted

Water pollution in the Czech Republic

Caused by:-Lowering oxygen content- occurrence of pollutants in water- thermal pollution

The Bílina river – the most polluted river

The basic groups of harmful substances that pollute water:

1. Salt2. Heavy metals (mercury, lead, cadmium, copper,

arsenic) -Industrial technological processes - sludge from sewage treatment plants - fertilizers - burning fossil fuels

3. acid rains

4. Organic substances (oil processing, coal, paints and varnishes, ..)

5. Increased content of nutrients (chemical nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon, ..) -> effect of reducing the oxygen content in water

6. Viruses and bacteria (get into the water from the waste water from households, agriculture, ..)

- Urban and industrial wastewater treatment plant

- prevention, following good business practices and responsible approach to the environment

- small streams are then significant strengthening their natural self-cleaning

Drinking water in the Czech RepublicDrinking water is obtained by adjusting the raw water.

Raw water is extracted from underground in the Czech Republic (45% –55 %) or surface water  (45% -55 %).
