Greetings Sorors: Happy Valentine’s Day! February is a month of love, however it is also the month that we honor those who have made a contribution to history, specifically Black History! As a member of the first African American sorority, we are all a part of that equation. Every day that we serve our communities and our sisters, we are building upon the legacy that our Founders’ envisioned 108 years ago… one of SISTERHOOD and SERVICE! You may not know that we also have many sorors, and their children, who have contributed to the history of African Americans right here in Oklahoma City. For example, did you know that our very own, Soror Ada Louis Spiel Fisher was a key figure in the Civil Rights movement in Oklahoma and on the campus of OU, she was inducted posthumously in the Oklahoma Women’s Hall of Fame. The University of Oklahoma dedicated a garden in her name. She was a member of Alpha Zeta chapter. Stories, such as these, are happening every day in our communities and Beta Sigma Omega sorors are leading the way! We are building a legacy that is worthy to be praised! February is also the time when we focus on heart health. 1 in 4 women die of heart disease in the United States each year. There are very few people that I know who have not been effected by this silent killer. Ladies, we MUST learn to focus on our health. I am personally guilty of putting everything else ahead of my health. Family, work and even sorority… however, I am asking all of you to make a pledge with me to do better for ourselves! WE DESERVE IT! With Beta Sigma Omega Sorors, such as, Aquilah Ahmad, Bashreerah Ahmad, Taniqua Ward, fitness experts, we have absolutely NO EXCUSE not to focus on improving our health and our hearts! So in the words of my late grandmother, “Let’s get to it”! In closing, I just want to remind all of you that you are loved, you are appreciated, you are valued and I NEED YOU! I need you to be here with me for many more years, to continue to build on this lasting legacy of love… that is Beta Sigma Omega. Greetings Sorors:

Happy Valentine’s Day! February is a month of love, however it is also the month that we honor those who have made a contribution to history, specifically Black History! As a member of the first African American

sorority, we are all a part of that equation. Anti-Basileus Message

Sorors In The Know

Sorors, we have hit the ground running with our programs! As we celebrated with a toast last month to the re-launching of our programs, it takes all of us to make each program a success. If you have not joined a committee, please do so. This is where the work gets done. Please email me at [email protected] listing the committee(s) you will work.

Throughout the year, I will be highlighting different program areas. This month we are reminded about heart disease and the African-American woman. Please see below information from https://www.goredforwomen.org/.

HEART DISEASE IN AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN

Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 killers in women. Stroke disproportionately affects African-Americans. Importantly, African-American women are less likely than Caucasian women to be aware that heart disease is the leading cause of death.

Diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, physical inactivity, obesity, and a family history of heart disease are all greatly prevalent among African-Americans and are major risk factors for heart disease and stroke. What’s more, African-American women have almost two times the risk of stroke than Caucasians and are more likely to die at an earlier age when compared to women of other ethnicities. Remember to wear red with a splash of pink for Pink Goes Red at the February Sorority meeting.

Sisterly,

Soror Monica Finley First Anti-Basileus

Plug into the Power of Prayer

Great sisterhood can only come from love. Understanding true love comes from God. I Corinthians 13:4-5 (NIV) advises us that "4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs." Strive to love like God loves us.

Soror Adella Smith was briefly hospitalized and is home resting. She needs our continued prayers. Please keep her family in prayer as they are her caregivers- Sorors Chequita Owens, daughter and VaRhea Owens Hopkins, granddaughter.

You may still send cards to Soror Marie Walker, 16809 Ventana Boulevard, Edmond, OK 73012.
