ood evening and welcome to Wheatsheaf Park for this, our first League match against Hanwell Town in close to a century, On 10 th December 1923, players from Staines Lagonda, as we were then known, got changed with their counterparts from Hanwell Town at The White Lion pub (between where Pets Corner now stands and the Iron Bridge – ie under the South Street junction), walked down Mill Mead (still there, but now truncated) to the ground at Hammonds Farm (now under the Reservoir), and contested a Great Western Suburban League fixture. Staines were pushing for top

spot, but had been beaten 3-1 in the away game just three weeks earlier – however, they more than avenged that scoreline by winning both points after a 10-0 victory!

The positions are now somewhat reversed, as it is Hanwell, recently deposed at the top of the table, who are out to avenge the reverse they suffered in the FA Cup at Reynolds Fields just under 8 weeks ago. On that occasion we were royally entertained by the Hanwell officials, and in return we welcome them to our home, and hope they enjoy the evening with us, and have a safe journey back to the northern part of Middlesex later on.

Since then, our fortunes have waned somewhat, and on Saturday – without kicking a ball – we slipped from the 19 th place in the table to which we’d been adhering for some while, to 20 th and last place. The previous week’s disappointing injury time capitulation against a rather limited Hertford side, marshalled brilliantly by their player manager Ben Herd, saw us miss the chance to climb above them and several other teams, and we were fortunate not to go bottom on the day when our neighbours Ashford also let a lead fritter away to defeat against Uxbridge – only our better goal difference keeping us above them. But on Saturday, despite fighting back once from 2-0 down, Hertford eventually lost 5-3 to Ashford, who duly clambered above us. Then on Sunday we travelled the Cheshunt to face another struggling team, FC Romania, again knowing that a win would see us rise five places. A nondescript first half was followed by the hosts breaking the deadlock with two quick strikes, but we found those reserves of determination that have served us well in early games, to strike back – first with a goal from the penalty spot by débutant Arif Hattabi, and then, right on 90 minutes, a super strike by Isaac Thompson salvaged a point.

We are still bottom, and still without a league win since 9 March, but responses like that lend justification to Mahrez’s squad rebuilding programme, and comparisons cannot realistically be made with last season while we remain competitive in all our League games, rather than shipping an average of 4 goals a time as we did in 2018/19.

We’ve added quite a few players to the Senior Squad in the last couple of weeks, and we will take this opportunity to introduce them in two stages – the second tranche will appear in Saturday’s edition for the visit of Bracknell.

Zaid AL-HUSSAINI Right winger / striker, 19. He began with the Phoenix Academy, but was then spotted by Derby County, where he spent a year and a half in their PL2 squad. During that period, he had a month’s loan loan last season with Gloucester City, appearing twice for them in the National League North, and an international match at U19 level for Iraq. Initially joining Potters Bar Town after his release by The Rams in summer 2019, he started the following season with Hampton & Richmond Borough, signing for Staines that October, as the first official signing for new boss Mahrez Bettache.

Joel FLAVIEN HOWARD Left winger / attacking midfielder, 20. Joey came up through the Development system at Colchester Road, until moving on at 16 to play youth team football for Sutton United and Metropolitan Police. From there he was signed by the Crystal Palace Foundation u19s, and is proud to have scored a goal at Selhurst Park. Played one pre-season game for Staines Town in July 2018, but signed for Carshalton Athletic, and had a spell dual registered with AFC Croydon Athletic later in the campaign. Began the 2019/20 season at Horley Town, then registered for Balham, before joining Staines in October 2019.

Rúben MARTINS DANTAS CARVALHO Left winger / central attacking midfielder, 18. Ruben joined Staines Town in October 2019 following a very short stay at Cheshunt FC, having spent the previous season at Enfield Borough, and earning a trial with Peterborough United. Before that he had five years with the Chelsea Centre of Excellence. He was born in Portugal.

Adam TOUBAL Winger / attacking midfielder, 23. A former Fulham U18 player, who then had a short spell with Cray Wanderers before gaining experience in Algeria with ES Sétif, and in the Gibraltar National League with Mons Calpe SC. Upon returning to England, he has played for Forest Hill Park, Holmsdale, Glebe, Peckham Town, and AMG Ballerz before joining Staines Town in October 2019. He is 5’8” tall, and last season was called into the Algeria U23 squad.

Among others to be signed, we have added several of Pete Stanford’s U18 players to the squad to provide additional cover, including Mustafa ‘Musti’ AHMED, Lewis HENDERSON, ‘keeper Armando SHKOZA. As always, the ‘downside’ is that several players have had to be released (or in these cases – a ‘soft release’, ie they remain registered). Dan Choules was effectively in this category from the start of the League season, and – due to injury – Jack Battie even before that; Samuel Amure, Aaron McCallum, James Philpot, and Denzel Gerrar have not made the transition between managers; and more recently Andrew Demby was added to the ranks of the ‘soft departees’. Max Ndah is trialling at Colchester; Klajdi Cani continues to nurse his thigh injury, and Calvin Barreto ws sadly absent at the weekend owing to a family funeral abroad.

The fixture list later in this edition has been updated. Please note that in a week’s time, we travel to THE HIVE, the superb new home of BARNET FC, for our Middlesex Senior Cup 2 nd Round tie – do try to make the trip if you can. Kick-off is at 7:45pm. Before that, we entertain Bracknell here next weekend, but the following weekend’s visit to Barking will be off if they win their FA Trophy replay tonight. We have fixed up dates for our two games in the ‘lesser’ cup competitions (the Southern Combination and Aldershot Senior Cups) – 3 & 10 December as listed, and have a new date for the Ashford Velocity Trophy game. Finally, please note that our “home” Youth League Cup match vs Bracknell, postponed a couple of weeks ago, is going to be played AT BRACKNELL TOWN FC tomorrow night, 7:45pm.

Sadly, we have news of another loss to bring you, brought to our attention via former committee members Max Angliss and Andy Jones. JAMES ‘Jimmy’ CUMMINS has passed away in the middle of

this month, at the age of just 38, leaving two young children. An appeal has been launched at Max Angliss’s pub, The Foresters Arms (Egham), to help defray his funeral expenses. Our sympathies go to his family and friends. James William Cummins was born in Chertsey on 22 March 1981, and lived in Englefield Green when he signed for Chris Davey’s Staines Town Youth team at the start of season 1998/9. Originally a midfielder, he became a prolific goalscoring forward in his young career. While still at school, he was selected, in quick succession, for his school team, then for Runnymede District, and then for Surrey Schools, before coming to the attention of Southampton FC where he played as a schoolboy. In season 1997/8 he was at Egham Town, quickly progressing through the youth ranks there to earn a First Team place. After crossing the river, he made his Club début for Staines on 29.7.98, in a Youth team friendly at Flackwell Heath which we lost 3-2. By the end of that season, he was top scorer in our Youths, and had made his first Reserve team appearances, beginning with a defeat against his old club, Egham, on 18.3.99. He was added to the First Team squad during 1999/2000, making his début in the 4-0 Ryman league win over another local side, Chertsey Town, on 6.5.00. Two weeks earlier, he had scored a rare double hat-trick in the Reserves’ Player of the Year. He was involved in almost a third of the First Team games in 2000/1, and bagged his first senior goal

in a Middlesex Senior Cup tie against Hanwell Town. He scored a total of exactly 50 goals at all levels for the Club. However, with our ground-share at Chertsey and the consequent closure of the Reserve side, which was still seen as James’ ‘bread and butter’, he did not return to the Club for season 2001/2. Nicknamed ‘Owen’, he worked for Savoy Tailor’s Guild, a menswear firm, and was interested in golf, lawn tennis, and running.

There are now THREE ways in which you can enjoy the STFC official matchday programme! The first is of course the traditional paper copy, which has been thoroughly redesigned by our new consultant Sam Berni, and is printed by Tony Vella at Print Direct Solutions of Langley [www.print-direct.net]. The physical programme is sponsored and promoted by the Staines Town FC Supporters’ Club, so please do your bit to support the Club by purchasing one (a snip at £2) and also by providing any feedback to David Norris, Christine Harberd, or John Blair in the Shop.

Meanwhile, Clive Stevens and Jaki Green of JustBeThere.com provide an online version which you can access by visiting and registering at www.justbethere.app, or by pointing your smartphone camera at this (new) QR code to gain immediate access, and/or to download it free of charge. The JBT edition includes additional interactive content, quizzes, Club shop, enhanced graphics, and several other experimental and innovative features (including an audio version for the visually impaired or simply to listen to in bed), and we are proud to be the initial partners of what we hope will become a major player in the world of “e-programmes”. This version is extensively reformatted for reading on a smartphone or tablet computer while at the game, but works just as well on a PC. JBT have also uploaded a back catalogue of old programmes, including those previously produced in hard copy, for you to enjoy free of charge.

Lastly, STFC’s own online portals allow you to view and download, completely free of charge, an exact replica of the physical edition, which once downloaded, you are authorised to print copies for your usein colour, black & white, or with colour only on the cover sheets as with the physical edition.

Don’t forget that in addition to the programme you are looking at right now, which we term “Part 1”, we also have a “Part 2”, available only as a physical document from the Club Shop. This 80 page Handbook is split in two for production reasons, each volume costing £3, of both together for £5. Volume I mainly deals with historical data—a Club history, honours board, past and present names, grounds, managers, and Life Members, and full stats of last season (senior and Academy). Volume II concentrates on the current season, with addresses, fixtures, cup draws, who’s who, statutory info and more.

TODAYS VISITORS

HANWELL EARLIER CLUBS

An earlier Hanwell FC played in the London League in 1898/9 and 1902-5, and the Great Western Suburban League 1905-11. They first entered the FA Cup in 1903/4 but failed to win any of their 7 ties. However, their first FA Amateur Cup campaign of 1904/5 was more successful, scoring 25 goals in 6 games to reach the 1 st Round Proper before losing to Ealing.

FORMATION Hanwell Town was originally founded in 1920 by a team of ‘Geordies’ working in the area and it is believed that this explains the black and white striped colours which are still used today. The pre- WW2 history of the club is largely undocumented, but it was reformed in 1947. There are now over 20 youth sides at the club, which has Charter Standard accreditation at both senior and junior levels.

GROUNDS For 20+ seasons up to June 1981 they played at Ealing Central Sports Ground, but then achieved a ground of their own at Reynolds Field where they remain today. Volunteers worked hard to get the former hunting lodge ready for the new season, and it enabled them to gain senior status in 1983. The lights were installed in 1989, and improvements have been made steadily ever since, which has enabled it to attract many prestigious games to Reynolds Field.

LEAGUES The club played in the London League from 1924 to 1927. They were members of the Great Western Suburban League between 1921 and ’25, initially under the name Hanwell Athletic. Upon reformation, Hanwell played in the Dauntless League, climbing the divisions with promotions in four successive years. They then switched to the Harrow, Wembley & District League (although leaving a 3rd XI in the Dauntless), remaining here until 1970, during which time they reached 8 cup finals ... and lost the lot! The club gained promotion to the Middlesex County League for 1970/1 and in that season won the League Cup, under the captaincy of Bob Fisher, who is now Chairman. Upon achieving senior status, they stepped up to the London Spartan League, immediately winning the Senior Division and with it promotion to the Premier. In 1994 they met Willesden Hawkeye in the League Cup Final at Charlton Athletic’s Valley ground, although losing the replay at the start of the next season. They finished 12th in the final season of the Spartan League, meaning they were placed in the Senior Division of the newly merged Spartan South Midlands League for 1998/9. For 1998/9 Ray Duffy took over as Manager from Roy Nairn, and immediately guided them to promotion to the Premier as runners-up to Homer Green on goal difference. They then enjoyed top-half finishes in 6 of the next 7 seasons, as well as

beating Harefield United in the Premier Division Cup final of 2003. A stumble at the end of 2004/5 saw them slip from leading the table most of the season to 2nd place behind Potters Bar Town, but despite the resignation of Duffy midway through the following campaign, Danny Vincent and Pat Gavin guided them to 3rd place and promotion to the Southern League. They were relegated back after just one season, and endured something of a slump. That was until 2013- 14, the most successful season in the club’s history, as they won the Spartan South Midlands League with a 14 point lead over Ampthill Town, with a record of P42 W35 D6 L1 F127 A36. Back in the Southern League Central Division, they finished 7th, just outside the play offs. In 2018, the club was switched from the Southern to the Isthmian League Division 1 South Central.

NATIONAL CUPS In 2013-14, they reached the FA Vase 5th Round, but were hampered by fixture congestion, beating Ashford Town less than two days before the big tie with Ampthill which was lost 3-1. In 1925/6, at Staines’ expense, they reached the 1 st Round Proper of the FA Amateur Cup, losing to Uxbridge.

COUNTY CUPS The club’s first major honour was to share the 1926 Middlesex Junior Charity Cup with rivals Roxeth & Har-row Old Boys. They won the London Senior Cup in 1992 and ‘93, and were finalists in ‘94. In 1993 they reached the Middlesex Charity Cup final, losing in extra time to Harrow Borough at Uxbridge, and they again lost in this final in 2001, this time to Ashford Town (Middx). They were Middlesex Senior Cup finalists in 2015, but lost 1-0 to a late Harrow Borough penalty.

PERSONNEL Former Staines Town man Roy Nairn managed the side from 1986-1998, and later became coach and was rewarded with a testimonial visit from Chelsea to mark his 20th anniversary there in 2002/3: Hanwell’s 5-3 win was achieved with the help of a goal by Martin Rowlands. Martin’s father Arthur is a legend at both Staines and Hanwell, having played 351 games for the Swans be-tween 1971 and ‘80, and then played for The Geordies from 1982, as did all five of his sons, Adam, Keith, Martin, Stephen and Anthony, with Keith holding the scoring record and managing the side from 2010-2011 before handing over to another ex-Swan, Tommy Williams along with Luke Evans. Ray Duffy had three spells as manager between 1998 and 2019, spanning 997 matches in all. Bob Fisher received a 50-year medallion from the FA, and had a stand named after him at Reynolds Field after completing 60 years. Ron Walker, who passed away in 2011 at age 90, was Secretary for over 40 years up to 1988 and is one of those whose contribution to HTFC has been enormous.

THE NON-LEAGUE COLUMN on the recent incident at Haringey Last Sunday’s front page of The Non-League Paper was going to be about the First Round Proper of the FA Cup. About the excitement of the upcoming draw at Maldon & Tiptree as Non-League clubs eagerly awaited those life-changing ties to come out of the hat – and what a draw it turned out to be. It was going to be about those clubs daring to dream. Isthmian Premier club Carshalton Athletic after they upset National League side Dagenham & Redbridge. Or Nantwich Town, who beat National League North high-fliers King’s Lynn Town. Then there was the story of Kingstonian beating higher league opposition in Dartford. There was also the drama at Potters Bar Town (whose team included Thomas Gogo and R’avan Constable), who scored an equaliser against neighbours Barnet in the 11th minute of stoppage time to set up a replay. And there was the excitement of goalkeeper Alan Julian heading an injury-time equaliser at Sutton United to keep Billericay Town’s FA Cup dream alive. The front page was supposed to carry pictures capturing all the emotion of this great competition on another action-packed day in Non-League football. Instead, for the second time in a month, it carried a story about allegations of racism. Once again, the ugly side of society has reared its head in Non-League, and English, football. On the back of the shameful scenes in Bulgaria when England players were racially abused and

the game was twice suspended, Haringey Borough walked off the pitch following alleged racism towards goalkeeper Valery Douglas Pajetat. Two men, aged 23 and 26, have since been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated common assault. The incident came in the 65th minute following a Yeovil penalty where he claims he was spat at and verbally abused by fans. The match didn’t restart and was abandoned. Boss Tom Loizou also said defender Coby Rowe was targeted. English football was appalled when the men’s senior team was on the end of horrific abuse and there have been calls for strong action against Bulgaria and their authorities. We are equally appalled at these allegations. FA chairman Greg Clarke spoke in the immediate aftermath of the Bulgaria game. He rightly pointed out that we must also look at the game in this country because there are issues that clearly need addressing. There is no hiding from that fact. The conversation must include what we are doing about our game. It’s four weeks since allegations were made during the National League game between Hartlepool United and Dover Athletic. Dover players Inih Effiong and Ricky Modeste were subjected to racist abuse and gestures. Pools players heard it and were upset at what they saw coming from some of their home fans. While they considered walking off the pitch, in the end the game was played to a conclusion. Hartlepool were rightly praised for their response to the situation and it looks like

Yeovil have reacted in a similar way. Boss Darren Sarll says they stand alongside Haringey and the club say they will be cooperating with the investigation which The FA say is ongoing. The tie is to be replayed on Tuesday, October 29. If proven, the two supporters should never watch a game of football in this country again. Of course, 99.9 per cent of Yeovil fans will be ashamed of what has allegedly happened. Hopefully anyone who has seen or heard anything comes forward to ensure the investigation can be as thorough as is needed. As we’ve said before, we all have a responsibility to drive this abhorrent behaviour out of our game and out of our society. No footballer, no person, should be attacked just because of their skin colour. In a high-profile competition, Haringey’s actions will be seen far and wide. Hopefully this can be a stepping stone towards a better future. Their stand is to be applauded. In times gone past, the incident may not have come to light until after the game. By stopping an FA Cup game in its tracks, the message will be louder. Racists are not welcome in our football grounds at any level. Only then can we get back to talking about the football.

By Matt Badcock; provided by the Non-League Paper, published by Greenways Pub-lishing, and forwarded by Edd Paul (Advertising Executive) and Kellie Discipline (Secre-tary & CEO, Isthmian Football League).

SPELTHORNE SPORTS AWARDSNominations are now closed for the Spelthorne Sports Awards Volunteer of the Year sponsored bySpecsavers. We will advise any news affecting STFC in due course.

AWAY TRAVELHaving so far organised minibuses to Ware, Phoenix Sports, and Haringey Borough, it is intendedthat the Supporter’s Club will put on a minibus - subject to demand - to the following away games:-● Barking ● Waltham Abbey ● Harlow Town ● Hertford TownPlease note that the Barking game is subject to them losing tonight’s FA Trophy replay: if they beat Margate, their next round tie will bounce our fixture. Also, apologies for the inconvenience to any supporters hoping to travel to FC Romania on theminibus – the game being moved to Sunday unfortunately made it impossible to run, as the hirers do not work Sundays, and several of those intending to come could not swap their plans to a Sunday. As it was, it was pleasing to see that there were plenty of our regulars at Theobalds Lane on Sunday– the official crowd of 69 (our estimate: 82) comfortably exceeded their 53 seasonal average, and in fact was their largest home gate so far this season. Also, thank you to the sharp eyed supporter who spotted that we’ve been advertising a minibus to the game with Chipstead on 11 January, and even tried to book a seat on it, despite the fact that this is a home game! The “MB” symbol should of course be attached with the previous week’s game, which is away at Harlow.

The fare to travel on these minibuses will be £10 per seat.If you are interested, please see John Blair in good time, or call him on 07770-546862.

GROUND MAINTENANCEIt had been noticed that, when the dugouts were moved back to St Pinnocks side of the ground in July, two protruding bolts remained by the perimeter wall in front of the main stand. Rob Gunning kindly volunteered to remove these with an angle grinder and this job was done by him last Friday evening.

Thank you, Rob!

By John Blair & David Norris

APPEAL FROM STEWARDSWe are always eager to hear from people who wish to volunteer for various jobs around the ground, whether on matchdays or otherwise. One aspect that the Club is looking to strengthen is that of Stewarding, so if you think you can help out with this important task, please let John or David know, or contact Kevin, the Club’s Chief Ops Officer.

AWARENESSRon Windsor - on behalf of the Supporters’ Club - ran a market stall in Staines High Street on September 4th (Wednesday market day) advertising the football club by handing out leaflets , fixture lists and advertising various merchandise, including an appearance from our then-manager. There was a certain amount of interest displayed by shoppers/market stall visitors - maybe not at the levels that were hoped for - but this is something we will looking to do again in the future - maybe in early Spring.

The Supportevrs’ Club is arranging kit sponsorship for the First Team players and management, at the following prices:

£60 to sponsor a player’s home kit.

£60 to sponsor a player’s away kit.

£60 to sponsor a member of the management coaching staff.

As you will see from the chart elsewhere in this issue, some players so far have only one kit sponsored (home or away), and there are others – listed on the TEAMS page – awaiting their first sponsor, so please contact John Blair on 07770-546862, or by see him at any of the forthcoming home or away games, if you would like to take up one of these sponsorship opportunities, and see your name in each programme.
