From The Desk of President, SBCCI:

Greetings.

On behalf of SBCCI, I would like to extend our warmest congratulations to the people of Switzerland on the occasion of the Switzerland National Day. SBCCI joins the excitement and celebration of the Swiss community on this annual event. I take the opportunity to express my special thanks to Zuellig, Holcim, Arifs, and SGS for sponsoring the SBCCI felicitation message published in the Daily Star on 1st of August.

We also congratulate Her Excellency Madame Caroline Trautweiler as the new Charge d’affaires and for the inauguration of the new Switzerland Embassy in Gulshan. We wish the Embassy all the best.

It’s so far been a busy year for SBCCI following a number of activities including the 3rd AGM, farewell of some close friends of SBCCI including the Swiss Ambassador, visit of high profile delegations from Switzerland, EC nominations/election of SBCCI and many others. We are also pleased to announce the new SBCCI website. It has full of information including new graphic de-signs and photos. The link to the SBCCI Facebook account can also be found in the same website.

On the Swiss delegation, we thank the Switzerland Embassy for involving some members of SBCCI to have opportunity to in-teract and share our Bangladesh experiences with the Swiss delegates. We believe that such important visits will boost the trade and investment of both Switzerland and Bangladesh.

This newsletter highlights some important activities of the SBCCI, Switzerland Embassy, SBCCI member companies and our friends. We hope that these articles may provide valuable insights and information to the readers. We further encourage every-one to contribute by providing comments and articles for the next newsletter. From The Desk of Swiss Embassy, Bangladesh:

Welcome to the latest issue of the SBCCI newsletter. This issue of the SBCCI news letter commemorates the Swiss National day which was celebrated on August 1, 2013. On this special event, I would like to ex tend belated but sincere wishes and greetings to the readers.

The Swiss-Bangladesh business and economic ties have been growing

rapidly in the recent years. The total bilateral trade volume had surpassed the USD 400 million mark last year. It is projected that the growth will

maintain its upward journey this year as well. Small and medium Swiss

enterprises are also increasingly becoming interested to invest or to do business with Bangladesh.

It gives me immense pleasure to inform you that an official business delegation comprised of senior Swiss Government officials visited Bangladesh in April. The visit underscores the point that Switzer-land regards Bangladesh as a country with vast economic potentials; a further business enabling envi-ronment in this country will provide fresh impetus to this end.

The Switzerland-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry- SBCCI, since its inception, has been playing an important role in fostering trade and investment relations between our two countries. I take this opportunity to thank SBCCI for its continued effort to expand the trade and investment ties between Switzerland and Bangladesh. I wish SBCCI every success in its endeavors.

DINNER TO BID FAREWELL TO MR. ASHFAQUE UR RAHMAN AND

MR. LAURENT THEROND

Switzerland-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry had arranged a dinner to bid farewell to Mr. Ashfaque ur Rahman, founder president of Switzerland– Bangladesh Chamber of commerce and Industry and former managing Director, Novartis (Bangladesh Limited) and Mr. Laurent Therond, treasurer of SBCCI and Managing Drector of Nestle Bangladesh Limited.

This event was hosted by Ms. Vidiya Amrit Khan, The Convener of Cultural & Communication Development Sub committee, SBCCI and Executive Director of Tutelar Oil Services Co. (Pvt.) Ltd.

Since the time Bangladesh is a sovereign country, Swiss businesses were already operating with appropriate organizations contrib-uting services to the society and the infant economy. With local presence of global companies in the 70’s decade Swiss business presence were in pharmaceuticals, plant protection, textile & industrial chemicals, infant nutrition. Gradually over the years the country today benefits from Swiss businesses in diversified field – food, chocolates, infant nutrition, textile and industrial chemi-cals, cement, textile machinery, food processing machinery, watches, agro chemicals, logistics services, pre-shipment inspections, pharmaceuticals. Not only was Swiss business contributing directly to the economic arena of the country but was simultaneously generating employment opportunity and revenue generation in the form of taxes and duties.

Against the backdrop of such robust economic ownership of Swiss businesses and social commitment, in late 2004 with the guid-ance and facilitation of the Swiss Embassy in Bangladesh the Swiss business organizations in Bangladesh integrated to form a busi-ness chamber. Subsequently in early 2005, The Switzerland Bangladesh Business Forum (SBBF) was established with the funda-mental objectives in Bangladesh of strengthening Swiss business interest, facilitating new Swiss investments, facilitating growth of existing Swiss businesses and an overall landscape for Swiss businesses in Bangladesh. Mr. Ashfaque ur Rahman was the initiator of this chamber and founder president.

Mr. Laurent Therond served a three years tenure in Bangladesh. He was assigned as treasurer of the chamber. He was always very active in his role and as a Chamber we have found his contribution to be very valuable.

The Switzerland-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, wishes them all the best for Their future endeavors.
