  • SWM SITUATIONERAsian Development Study (2003): MM generates about 6,700 tons of garbage per day. (As huge as 1 level of SM Manila or SM Megamall Building A)

    Recent Report on MM solid waste (2007): MM generates 7,200 tons of waste.

    An average Filipino generates an estimated volume of 0.3kg to 0.7kg per day in rural & urban areas respectively.WASTE GENERATION

  • SWM SITUATIONERWASTE GENERATION

  • SWM SITUATIONERSTORAGE

  • SWM SITUATIONERCOLLECTIONApproximately Php 3.54 billion is spent annually on collection & disposal of MMs solid waste;

    In 2001, from 5 to 24% of the total expenditures of MMs LGUs went to SWM;

    Based on survey conducted by the National Demographic & Health, 30% of households had access to waste collection at varying frequencies.

  • SWM SITUATIONERCOLLECTIONFrequency of waste collection varies ranging from twice a week to once every two weeks;

    Collection efficiency in urban areas is estimated at 70%;

    Collection efficiency in rural areas is estimated at 40%;

    Waste not collected are mostly indiscriminately dumped, burnt, goes to our water system or to open dumps.

  • SWM SITUATIONERTRANSFER & TRANSPORTA transfer station is established if the hauling distance from the source to the disposal facility is far.

    Smaller dump truck transfers the collected waste to a bigger dump truck.

    The big dump trucks then transport the solid waste to the disposal facility.

  • SWM SITUATIONERPROCESSING & RECOVERYNo reliable data on the extent of recycling and composting in the country.

    Recycling remains largely an informal-sector activity.

    In 1997, only 6% of SW is recycled in MM. In 2000, recycling rate is at 13%.

Solid Waste Diversion Within 5 years upon the effectivity of the Act (by year 2006), the LGU should divert at least 25% of the waste from disposal facilities through re-use, recycling, composting and other resource recovery activities. Waste diversion goals should be increased every 3 years thereafter (year 2009).
