The Jazz festival is just around the corner. Sacramento Yacht Club as the upriver host really outdoes itself when it comes to this event. If you would like to be part of this huge undertaking then volunteer to help. See Gordon for help in the galley. See Club Manager Paul Taylor for registration and administrative duties. See bar manager Morris Lum for bartending duties. See Chuck Lenert for help on the docks. It’s so much more fun when you are part of the crew. Also when you see the major players around the club thank them for what they do. It’s a lot of work and they love doing it but is also nice to be appreciated.

CommodoreBob Lygren

Hello all! First off, I would like to thank all the galley crews for their dedication to the club. I can’t believe it is already May, but who is counting. This month has been a little slow around the clubhouse. We had our monthly meeting with the galley crew of Kevin Hubble, Paul Hairell and Alicia Ortiz, Jan Lucas, Shirley Lenert,

Susie Bettis, and Pauli Ayres. Our last TGIF of the year was an encore performance by Dave and Victoria Hoppe with those famous tacos that are to die for. Sunday breakfast was put on by Kevin Hubble, Bob and Pam Lygren and Kevin Weatherington.

" # $ addition that has made to the club! It came with a few challenges though as we tore it apart we found lots of dry rot and a few beams had to be replaced that we did not plan on doing. Everything turned out perfect and the deck will stand for years to come.

We will have a work party May 16th and 17th to %&' will need plenty of volunteers to make it run smooth. So don’t run away when Harold Alves or Sue Bettis comes your way, just say,” Yes I can do that!”Remember this is a volunteer club….

Why Is A Ship Called She?

A ship is called a "she" because there is always a great deal of bustle around her;there is usually a gang of men about;she has a waist and stays;it takes a lot of paint to keep her good looking;it is not the initial expense that breaks you, it is the upkeep;she can be all decked out;it takes an experienced man to handle her correctly and without a man at the helm, she is absolutely un-controllable.She shows her topside, hides her bottom and when coming into port, always heads for the buoys

Shipmates, for our second cruise of the year, we had a great cruise to WillowBerm Marina.PC Doug McPherson and Debbie did a great job of putting this cruise together. There was something for everyone. Everybody behaved and no one was kicked out of anyplace. So shipmates we

need to get our game up for next time. We have a reputation to live up to. " _ 3 [ # shipmate Bill and Andrea Justice, was a big hit. The truck was complete with the name of our club and to 3'Special thanks also to Jim Maclnnis for driving us all around, and not being able to drink while doing so. We had 22 boats attend the cruise and many shipmates drove to WillowBerm. Doug’s weather forecast was even better than expected, we were in the 80s and 90s with sunshine every day. Our next event is Opening Day & the Boat Parade. Flyers are in the club & on the Web. Our theme is ( “ Rock’n Rollin “ on the River. ) So dress in 50’s thru 70’s attire & decorate your Boats around this theme. If you have special Music play it loud during the Parade.

FOR SALEShangri-La on the American River

After 12 memorable years on the Ameri-can River, Bob & Susan Danelz are going to try living in a house with a regular backyard. We wanted to present this op-portunity to the SYC membership before we involve outside help. What we offer:1 – mobile home, Champion model 1986, originally 14 X 48 modular, built with real wood and siding. We purchased in

5 X 48 addition making home 19’ wide in the living room area and also a walk-in closet. (Susan has always had a lot of clothes) total 900 square feet. 2 bedroom, 1.5 bath. Virtually everything on the inside has been replaced or upgraded. Central heat and AIR

added 5 years ago.

The back yard is, well, been described as a million dollar view. We have a covered upper deck with a 7 ½ X 15 workshop and a laundry shed. The back deck is gated and locked for privacy. We have some grass to mow and lots of vegetation/plants. The dock has grown over the years to accommodate our 43’

!"#$% steps. 17’ Bayliner ski boat also included.

W' *'+#$; *;"<Delta breeze comes over the river, the sunsets are to die for and your backyard goes all the way to San Francisco. Last month we had Safety Saturday. We had Vessel Safety Checks, CPR training, Line handling, presentations on Hypothermia and Heat Stroke, and a demonstration about recovering people from the water. We also had a lunch prepared by Kevin Hubble, Linda Garrison and Bob Logan.

Thanks guys. Thanks also to Paul Taylor, his crew, the Hubbles and anyone else for turning around the room from the previously well attended meeting.

Of the 16 vessel Safety Checks, not all passed. " 3 and remedy potentially costly issues. Thank you Pete Little and Tom Harris for helping me with these checks.

CPR training was attended by about 16 folks.A line handling or more appropriately line

heaving demonstration was given by Christie Kaiser. She showed that, with the right line and some practice, anyone of any size can heave a line with accuracy almost 50 feet.

' of trying to haul a somewhat incapacitated person from the water and onto the dock. Port Captain Chuck Z "'#*{> simulate a person. With the help of Sandy and Pete Little, we were able to get the “dummy” into a jump suit to more accurately portray a true body proportions. What the demonstration showed was that, even though the dummy was only 150lbs, it was almost impossible to single handedly haul it onto a platform only 18 inches above it due to a lack of a proper fulcrum angle. Imagine a person weighing 200lbs or more!

Marcy Best gave a seminar on hypothermia and heat stroke. Two conditions which we as boaters can be exposed too. The best part of the seminar was that Marcy was able to dispel some popular myths about hypothermia and its treatment. I was able to show a short demonstration of hypothermia in action ' "to me by Port Captain Chuck Lenert as something he used with his Boy Scouts to demonstrate the same 5> succession, pulled out as many as I could until I could no longer do so. I was able to retrieve only 6 before I lost control of my hand. What was remarkable was the amount of pain involved as my hand warmed up and I regained use of my hand. Just imagine if your whole body was submerged, and then was being warmed. The biggest lesson from Marcy that I came away with was to be very careful with handling the person. They are in an extremely fragile state. We had a total of 25 people attend.

On the subject of rescues, it would seem that

Todd and Natalie Bradburn, Terry and George O’Conner were involved in a water rescue on the American River. It would seem that a woman had gotten in trouble and went under. Todd pulled her out and was involved in helping revive her. So SYC has another hero in our midst. Natalie Bradburn had sent an email talking about Todd’s deeds. What was most striking to me was her acknowledgement about how important CPR training is. Again, keep in mind that we had 25 people 5{>^|*}attend CPR training. After receiving several emails about this rescue, I was watching a TV show called Deadliest ~ _ ^ # 3>' had gone down during a storm. The Coast Guard was talking about the POS (possibility of survival) in the 40 degree water temperature. What was ironic is that ^~^ #Bradburn rescue said that the water temperature in the American River was about 40 degrees. About the same temperature as the Bearing Sea. Still people, including children were in the water. Its amazing how little respect we have for the dangers of the rivers here. I doubt if any of the people from “Deadliest Catch” would go swimming in the Bearing Sea. Of course, the report also says that ALCOHOL may have played a part in the incident. Also, it was noted that she did not have a life jacket on. Please, watch your alcohol, wear your life jacket and take a CPR class.

There’s a new boat coming to SYC as soon as her Bahaman registry can be switched to the good old USA. The Island will have to be extended at least 500 more feet to accommodate the length of the new purchase and the clubhouse view might be obstructed a bit. On the bright

side, there will be plenty of party space, and room service will be free on the new Rockabye III. Chuck, we’ll need a little extra wiring on the Island.

Pure fantasy, wishful thinking, lust for luxury, and the ultimate shipdream. The ship is the Sapphire Princess and I want to keep it. All 950 feet of her. And the cute Brit captain too. And the Italian chef. And the French Maitre-d’Hotel. Oh my!

I’m late with this cruising thing as I think everyone at SYC has taken at least one. I promised myself a trip when I retired last year, and WOW what an experience. This first cruise out of L.A. March 28 to April 4 was round trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, and Tellier Town. Elaborate dining, balcony breakfasts with a side of whale-watching, exploring 15 levels, meeting people from all over (upwards of 3,000 of them), sipping cocktails watching our wake across the Sea of Cortez -- WOW again. Music, martinis, Mariachis, Mexico - Hola!

My Puerto Vallarta excursion was first to a church and then to a tequila factory - great good girl/bad girl combo with a few iguanas thrown in for native color. Mazatlan’s was a very neat estuary boat ride up the river through the mangroves which reminded me much of the Georgiana. Lots of birds, flowers, beaches, shopping and photography

along the way. SYC Cabo San Lucas Ambassador Pam Tellier whisked me up to her pretty veranda for some Bloody Marys while we looked down on my new ship in the bay below. Victoria and Dave Hoppe (and hijo) were heading home, so “Pamayla” and I lunched and Pacifico’d on the

beach next to the SYC sign before she drove me back to the ship for an early takeoff. Waved goodbye and churned up the Baja Bash to L.A., leaving Mexico’s perfect weather far behind. Awesome trip. So, if you notice the Island is being extended a few hundred feet, get ready for Rockabye III (formerly the Sapphire Princess) to arrive. Drinks are on me.
