Remember…

The letter groups oi, oy, au, aw, ew, ue, oo are not broken apart.

These letter groups stay together in a syllable.So, even if the syllable is closed (which would usually

mean that the vowel would have a short sound) these syllables would still make the sounds we just discussed.

We have learned to identify syllables, syllable patterns and vowel sounds because knowing them helps us pronounce unfamiliar words.

If you’re not sure how to pronounce a word with one of the above sounds, then try pronouncing it with different vowel sounds and listen for a word you know.
