INTRODUCTIONArabic in Jamia Millia Islamia has been one of the subjects which were introducedat the under graduate level at the earliest stage. However, its teaching at post-graduate level started in 1976 as one of the three disciplines of the erstwhileDepartment of Islamic & Arab-Iranian Studies. The Department of Arabic as anindependent unit was established only in 1988. At present the Department conductsdifferent courses such as B.A. (Pass) and Honours, M.A. and Part-Time eveningcourses namely Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Modern Arabic.Besides, it also enrolls scholars for Ph. D. Course on variety of subjects relevant toArabic language and literature. Till date, 21 scholars have been awarded Ph. D.Degree.

One of the unique features of the courses designed for various levels of study is thespecial thrust on the need to create considerable efficiency in writing and speakingin Arabic among the students. Translation/ Interpretation from English into Arabicand vice-versa is another aspect which is given special attention at various levels ofteaching.

subjects. It will be covered under five units as per details below:

THE UNIVERSITY EXAMINATIONS(Relevant extracts from Ordinance X)

Attendance (for Regular Students)2.1 A Candidate shall be deemed to have under-gone a regular course ofstudy in the University, if he/she has attended at least 75% in the aggregateof lectures, tutorials and practicals in order to be eligible to appear at theExamination. Provided that the Majlis-i- Talimi (Academic Council) may,in special circumstances, condone any shortage in such attendance exceptotherwise provided by the Academic Council.

2.2 A relaxation to the maximum extent of 15% of the total attendance shallbe accorded to student on account of sickness, participation in universityfunctions and the prescribed Educational Tours Field Trips Field workprovided that the. attendance record, duly counter signed by the Teacheriucharge, is sent to the Head of the Department concemediPrincipal,University Polytechnic within two weeks of the function/activity etc.

Provided further in case of sickness/medical disability an application for thecondonation shall be supported by a medical certificate issued by aregistered Medical . Practitioner/Public Hospital and duly authenticated bythe Ansari Health Centre of JIVII Such applications-must be submitted eitherduring .the period of treatment/hospitalisation or within two weeksfollowing recovery.

12. Time limit for passing an ExaminationNo person shall be allowed to appear in the Examination after the expiry ofthe periods specified against each Course. noted below:----------------- Name of the Course Maximum Duration in 'ears.

Grace Marks:If the Examination Committee considers it necessary, it may award gracemarks on the following pattern:

20.1 A maximum of three (3) grace marks in all Courses of the University.Provided that the system of awarding grace marks shall not be applicable toCourses, where grades are awarded.

20.2 Grace marks shall be given only to those candidates, who by obtainingthem are able to either pass the Examination or secure a Compartment orgranting the divisions. The award of grace marks shall be at the discretion ofthe Examination Comminee and no appeal in this regard shall beentertained.

20.3 Only minimum grace marks, as required to pass the Examination or tosecure a Compartment, shall be awarded.

20.4 The grace marks awarded shall not be counted in computing thepercentage or (rand total or aggregate.

Improvement of the Division:Unless otherwise provided, a candidate will be allowed to appear at the

Examination to improve upon his/her performance in the Examination heldin the preceding year.

If a candidate appears at the Examination in order to improve uponhis/her previous marks of the same Subject/Paper, higher marks as obtainedin his/her two such Examinations shall be taken into account fordetermination of his/her final result.

A candidate desiring to improve his/her Percentage of Marks will haveto submit an application to the Controller of Examinations latest by 15thSeptember of. the Year in which he/she passed the Subject/Paper, or asnotified by the Controller of Examinations.

To improve upon the Division or Percentage of Marks, a candidatemaybe allowed to appear at the next Annual Examination only in Paper (s)concerned.

(v) The syllabus of the Examination will be the same as the one prescribedfor the year. when the candidate appeared at the Examination in the Paperconcerned.

21 A. Students of Class B.A./B.SUB.Com. (Pass/Bons)/B.C.A., B-BS,B.I.B.F., B.Sc. Instrumentation, M.A/MSc./htS.S./M.Sc. (Elect)/M.Com./M.Ed./I.L.B. applying for improvement in one paper not morethan once.

21A.1 A student may appear for improvement in any paper in next higherclass only without any break/gap in study of the course i.e. a first year papercan be improved in the second year only, not in

B.B.S., B.I.B.F, B.Sc.Instrumentation & LL.B. andM.A./M.Sc./ M.Com / M.S.S/M.Sc.(Elect.) both previous and Final shall beallowed to appear for improvement only at the time of Annual Examination.In case of M.S.S./M.Sc.(Electronics), the improvement for the paper(s) of I& II semester shall be allowed along with the III & IV semester,respectively.

(ii) Final year students B.A/B.Sc./B.Coni. (Pass/Hons)/B.C.A.,B.B.S.,B.I.B.F ., LL.B., standard X and standard XII may be allowed to attemptimprovement along with the Comptt. Examinations.

21 A.3 The better of the two marks obtained by a student in both attemptswill be considered as final and conclusive.

In case of students who apply for improvement but do not appear inpaper/papers their previous marks in the said paper/papers shall be counted.21 A.4 (i) If a student of final year desires to appear for improvement at thetime of the next Annual Examination, he will not be granted admission to ahigher class.

(ii) Students who have already secured admission on the basis of theirunimproved marks are eligible to appear for improvement at the time ofComptt. examination only where improvement is permitted along withcomptt. examination as per rule 2(b) above.

21 A.5 The student will have to appear in the improvement examination onthe basis of the current syllabus in the same paper. However if the paper hasbeen chan ged (Title and contents) then the student would appear as per theold syllabus of the paper.

21 A.6 No chance for improvement in the practical, Field work, Viva-cote.sessional, internal Assessment and Dissertation will be given.

Retotalling of Answer Scripts:22.1 The marks of the candidate shall be retotalled on an applicationreceived from the candidate on payment of the prescribed fee per Paper. Theabove Fee will be refunded, if the total is found to be incorrect

22.2 No application for retotalling shall be entertained, unless it is madewithin fifteen days of the publication of the result.

Re-Evaluation of Answer Script:23.1 (i) Any candidate, intending to apply for re-evaluation of answerscripts (s) of any Paper/Subject of his/her written Examination, may do soon the prescribed Application Form within 15 days from the date of issue ofmarks sheet.

tii) The re-evaluation of scripts will not be allowed in more than one third ofwritten Papers of an Annual Examination.

23.2 Each application for re-evaluation shall be accompanied by the originalStatement of Marks Issued to the candidate.

23.3 Re-evaluation shall not be permitted in the case of PracticalExaminations, viva vote, Project Report, Sessionals/Intemal Assessmentand Dissertation, as also the answer scripts of any Examination which havealready been valued in full by Joint Examiners/Board of Examiners.

23.4 The candidate applying for re-evaluation shall be required to pay theprescribed Fee per Paper or part thereof; No refund shall be made in anycase except if marks increased more than 20%, in a paper/subject.

23.5 The Controller of Examinations will select an Examiner for revaluationfrom amongst a panel of at least three Examiners in each paper

recommended by the Board of Studies. The said panel shall exclude thename of the initial examiner.

23.6 The merit list, declared in the results of the respective Examinationshall not be prejudiced owing to re-evaluation of scripts.

23.7 If there be any change in the result of the Examination due to re-evaluation of answer scripts, no examinee can complain in the Court ofLaw, nor any action can be initiated against the Examiner (s) concerned.

23.8 (i) I f the award of the Re-evaluator (second Examiner) varies from theoriginal award up to and including + -5% of the maximum marks securedearlier, the original award shall stand.

If the award of the Re-evaluator varies from the original award up to andincluding

-+20% of the maximum marks secured earlier, then the answer script shallbe sent to the second re-evaluator (Third Examiner).

The average of the marks awarded by the Second and Third Examinersshall be final.

23.9 All cases of re-evaluation of scripts shall be repol 1 ed to theExamination Committee.

23.10 Applications for re-evaluation of answer scripts only for AnnualExamination shall be accepted.

23.11 Answer scripts of those examinees who appeared for improvement ofdivision or Percentage of Marks shall be final and shall not be subject to re-evaluation.

ANNEXURE X-B (Vide Para 14 of Ordinance X)

Pass Percentage and Promotion of Candidates:

(i) M.AJM.Cpm:33% marks in each Paper or Part thereof;40% marks in Viva-Voce/ Project/ Dissertation (if any);33% marks in Internal Assessment of each paper (if any); and40% marks in the aggregate of each Part. (ii) M.Sc. (Including M.A.Geography):33% marks in each Paper or Part thereof;40% marks in Practical/ Project/ Viva-Voce/Dissertation;33% marks in the Internal Assessment of each Paper (if any); and 40%marks in the aggregate of each Part.

B.A./B.Sc. (Pass):33% marks in each Compulsory Paper;33% marks in each paper (qualifying marks);33% marks in Practical and Viva-Voce (if any);33% marks in each subject; and40% marks in the aggregate of all Parts.

B.AJB.Com. (Hons.)/B.B.S.:33% marks in each Compulsory Paper, except General English;33% marks in each Honours Paper (qualifying marks);33% marks in each Subsidiary Paper (qualifying Papers);33% marks in Practital/Intenal Viva-Voce Assessment (if any):33% marks in each Subject (Hons. and Subsidiary);33% marks in General English of each Part;40% marks in the aggregate of the subsidiary subjects of Parts I & and40% marks in the aggregate of the Main Subject of all Parts.

(b) Division:(i) B.A./B.Sc. (Pass): Division shall be assigned to the

successful candidates on the basis of the aggregate marksobtained in Parts I, H and III Examinations by thecandidate in the Optional Subject and General English. For

(c) Compartmental Examination:

B.A./B.Sc. (Pass) Part 1/11/111:There will be no compartmental exam for Part I & II.A candidate who has not passed the B.A. B.Sc. (Pass), Part III,Examination, but has secured not less than 33% of marks in at leastone of the Optional Subject and at least 25% of marks in theaggregate of Optional Subjects of Part III, will be permitted to appearat the Compartmental Examination in those Papers in which he/shehas not secured at least 33% of marks.

B.Sc. (Pass) the division will be assigned only of theaggregate marks obtained in Science Subject.

A candidate who is declared passed and obtained the required percentage ofmarks in the aggregate, shall be placed in the following Division.75% of marks or more in Paper(s)

Candidates who have passed all papers of Part 1/II and III but not securedrequired aggregate, shall be permitted to appear after followingCompartmental exams in those two papers of Part III in which he/she securelowest marks,

Candidates who fail to clear their paper(s) of Part and passed all papersof Part III or get compartment in Part III will be allowed to clear thosepapers at the next Compartmental exam only once. After that they will bepermitted to appear in the annual examination only.

(h) B.AJB. ScJB. Com. (Hons.)/B.C.AJB.B.S./13.I.B.F./ B.Sc.Instrumentation, Pam I, II, III:There will be no compartmental exam for Part I & H.

A candidate of ' B.A./B.Sc./B.Com.(Hons.)/BCA/BBS/BIBF Part II IExamination will be permitted to appear at the Compartmental Examinationin those Papers in which he/she has not secured at least 36% of marks. ifhe/she fails in the papers noted below:

R.A./Et.Sc. (Hons.) /B.Sc. Instrumentation Part MI.

(Other than B.A. (Hons.) in Social Work) Passing in at least one of thesubjects (Main or Subsidiary) and securing at least 25% marks in theaggregate (Main and Subsidiary Subjects).

B.A. / B.Sc./ B.Com: (lions) IBOUBBSIBIBF/ B Sc. Instrumentation PartIll and B.A. (Hons.) in Social work, Part MI/III.

Failing in any three Papers, of Part III securing at least 25% in theaggregate.

Candidates who fail to clear their paper(s) of Part I/II and passed all papersof Part III or get compartment in Part III will be allowed to clear thosepapers at the next Compartmental exam only once. After that they will bepermitted to appear in the annual examination only.

(iii) The Pass percentage in the Compartmental Examination will be thesame as stated above.

(iv) An eligible candidate, who does not appear or fails at theCompartmental Examination, may appear at the next Annual Examinationas an Ex-Student and will pass all the Papers he/she was required to pass atthe previous Compartmental Examination.

Note: (1) If there is only one Paper in a Subject in an y year, the Paper shallbe treated as a Subject.

For the purpose of placing a candidate in the CompartmentalExamination, the performance in Compulsory Subjects will not beconsidered. But a candidate has to obtain qualifying mark in Compulsorysubjects for the award of the Degree.

Practical Examination or Dissertation/Projector Viva- Voce Examinationwill not be held again, if the candidate has secured at least passing marks inhis/her earlier Bxamination.

(d) A student of 1st year of any Course who is detained due to shortage ofattendance will no longer remain the student of the faculty/department. Suchstudent will have to seek fresh admission and will be required to go throughentire process of admission and competition.
