Unit I Concepts of Ecology: Ecosystem, Energy and nutrient flow in ecosystem, Food chain, Environmental Segments: Atmospheric Structure, Classification of air pollutants, sources of air pollution and their effects on human health and property. Atmospheric chemistry, Photochemical Smog, Ozone depletion.

Unit II Air Quality and Standards, Meteorological phenomena and their influence on Air Quality, Lapse rates, Dispersion of Pollutants. Air Pollution Control: Introduction to Particulate and Gaseous pollutant control.

Unit III Water Quality: Physical, Chemical and Biological parameters. Water quality standards, Biochemical (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD). BOD/COD Calculations Environmental Analyses: pH, Alkalinity, Conductivity, Ammonia, Fluoride, Sulphate, Chloride. Analysis and measurement

of gaseous pollutants.

Unit IV Water purification processes in natural systems: Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Impact of wastewater discharge on streams, Oxygen Sag Curve. Introduction to Water Treatment Technologies: Sedimentation, Coagulation and Flocculation, Hardness Reduction, Filtration and Disinfection.

Unit V Wastewater Characteristics, Introduction to wastewater treatment technologies. Primary Treatment: Screening, Grit Removal, Flow measurement, Flow equalization. Secondary Treatment: Microbial growth curve, Suspended and Attached growth systems.

Unit VI Solid Waste: Classification, Sources and Characteristics. Waste Management: Solid Waste Generation, Collection, Processing and Disposal Methods.

Resource Recovery in Waste Management, Biological and Thermal Conversion Processes. Note: Units I and III shall be taught by the Department of Applied Chemistry. Units II and VI shall be taught by the Department of Chemical Engineering. Units IV and V shall be taught by the Department of Civil Engineering.

typical media. Power and intensity of sound, Inverse square law for intensity of sound, human ear’s

sensitivity, Sound level scale (or decibal scale) Frequency spectra, Effects of noise, Noise in free in

enclosed spaces, sound transmission paths in buildings.

(b) Acoustics: essential requirements of good acoustics of an auditorium, Reverberation and reverberation

time, Absorption of sound, Absorption coefficient and total absorption, Sabine’s formula and its

derivation. Optimum reverberation time for music and speech, measurement of absorption coefficient,

Absorption coefficients of some typical materials, Factors influencing acoustical properties of buildings, Noise and its insulation.

Illumination and Colour:

(a) Illumination: Introduction, Definition of photometric terms, (luminous efficiency, luminous flux,

luminous intensity and illumination or illuminance, oblique illumination and Lambert’s cosine law,

brightness or luminance), Standards and units, Artificial lighting of a room, Levels of illumination

applications.

buildings in respect of functional efficiency, building services,

and environmental context, interiors and exteriors designs,

physical and economic constraints.

Note: Field Visits/Site visits/case studies may involve local

and/or outstation study/Educational tours and have weight age

in course work marks to be decided by subject teacher.

An integral part of the architectural design teaching at the advance level is to promote team spirit and inculcate

Contents:

Each student is required to conduct an intensive study and present a design thesis on any of the design topics.

The student should submit synopsis for at least three different design or research oriented topics, to the faculty

of which one will be approved to carry on the research and design. Each student shall be attached with a faculty

member who will guide his work. The arrangement for the assessment of the progress of the students and a programme schedule will be declared separately for each session.

The work of a student should include complete detailed study topography, climate, site selection, special

requirements, and standard data, construction and services and all other factors that are involved with a

particular thesis topics.

Along with the final design proposals at least two of the following items shall be taken as elective, for complete

design or approved part thereof should be covered in full detail and included in the design and presentation.

1. Structural calculations and design.

2. Detailed estimate and specification.

3. Working, drawing and construction details.

4. Detailed design and proposals for services to cover Air conditioning and mechanical conveying,

whether supply and sanitation, acoustical design and specification.

5. Interior design proposals including furniture, fitting and finishes. 6. Landscape design proposals in details.

7. Master plan and traffic organization in case of campus design topics.

The design proposals should be prepared and presented with the help of charts, drawings, perspective views,

models and other audiovisual aids. A thesis report must also be prepared and submitted in triplicate type written

and bound together with prints and photographs of all drawings and models, prepared them, to explain the

objectives, scope, research and data, design concept and approach, design proposals, construction programming

and financing etc.

The original drawings, models and a copy of thesis report will be returned to the students in due course of time

as decided by the faculty. However, two copies of the report together with prints and photographs of drawings

and models shall be retained by the college.
