Seminar on Practice Teaching (Valencia Hall)

The seminar is three-day lecture held at Valencia Hall. Various highly-qualified persons were invited as speakers. They imparted essential knowledge, guidelines, and tips in being an effective and efficient student teacher. Some of the speakers talked about the application process for Teacher I, introduction about the Licensure Examination Teachers, orientation about the K-12 Curriculum, and more information about professional education that may help us in our chosen field.

I have learned greatly through this seminar and it enriched my knowledge about certain things about my chosen career. The speakers have given me inspiration to achieve and do more. It helped me to reflect that in this profession, I must carefully plan my career path to achieve success.

Furthermore, I must not stop in attending seminars and conferences like this because it will add up to my experience, knowledge, and most important, my development as an educator. It would also be an advantage if I ever want to increase my rank as a teacher.

Group reporting Input on group performance

In my first day, establishing authority over the students is very vital to the success of our relationship inside the classroom. Students should see me as a teacher, not only a college student, so that they would respect me. I can be their friend but only outside the classroom. Certain limitations must be imposed. Respect is an important aspect that I must gain from them.

I must be observant to their behavior and through it, I must determine if they are still ineterested. Sharing jokes and asking funny questions may help to ease boredom.

Written output2 for Chapters 24-27 of El Fili, composed of three activities

Keeping the silence and focus of the students while doing their written outputs is important because they may not give their best and seriousness in the activity. Keen observation is also needed. Students who are caught copying from each other or discussing the questions with themselves must be reprimanded and be given a warning. If they will repeat it, deductions may be given.

In checking the students’ outputs, one must set a certain standard or rubric. These outputs are subjective in nature; students will just give their opinion or insights about the discussed lesson. Therefore, I must grade them on how well they have expressed themselves and how deep their understanding of the lesson is. I have also taken the time to give comments on some papers and correcting grammatical errors.

Meanwhile group activites are one of the best strategies in promoting collaborative and student-centered learning. In this strategy, the students are the one who are working and discovering the lesson. They have the independence to explore the lesson on their own.

2 See sample student outputs with feedback on page [insert page here]3 As per instruction of the cooperating teacher, from this day forward, I would discuss the lessons from the Filipino journal “Ang Batikan”. The teacher must prevent unnecessary comments when students tend to relate in the issues discussed. When they find the discussion interesting, students sometimes shout their answer due to excitement instead of raising his/her hand. In some instances, students answer in chorus. In situations like these, order and harmony must be established first before hearing their varying opinions.

Grammar is one of the hardest topics to teach in Filipino. Unlike literature where every answer may be accepted and the type of discussion is a subjective one, in grammar, there can be only one answer. In other words, the teacher must be knowledgeable in the topic he/she is teaching because in this aspect of Filipino, the teacher must be very sure in answers he/she is giving and he/she cannot make a mistake. Furthermore, in teaching grammar, the teacher must be very clear in explaining concepts and ideas and he/she must devise a way or formulate steps on how students can easily grasp the lesson. To further strengthem the proces learning, drills must be done test the students’ understanding the lesson. In this case, for every topic in grammar that I have discussed, I have prepared drills. When the score of the students in drills are low, I will give another one until they have fully learned the lesson and gotten high scores.

Ang pangkat na may pinakamaraming puntos ay may dagdag na puntos sa Periodical Test.

Students get tired also of their daily routine of lectures, discussions, and group activities. They sometimes need a break. All of the topics included in the 3rd Periodical Test are discussed and there are no further activities to be done. Because of this, I have developed a game for the class in relation to the figures of speech we have tackled yesterday. In hosting a game, it is very necessary to keep the noise down as students get very excited in playing and participating. Also, it is a good motivation for students to be active and perform better in the game if there is a reward. These games make the students more relaxed and set their mood in a good way because of the fun and happiness it had brough to them.

Role playing as motivation is a very effective strategy for catching the students’ attention in the class. The formula for this is to devise situations that are funny and weird in nature but are still connected to the theme of the topic. Question-and-answerFocus on important lines and symbolismsVenn diagram

In El Filibusterismo, lines and passgaes from characters oftentimes are rich in symbolisms and hidden meanings. Hence, it is important to focus on these lines to futher deepen and enrich the discussion of the lesson. It is also vital to connect the meaning of these lines in our present-day society.

Debates is an interesting way to have a peek to the insights and opinions of students. It also gives the teacher the opportunity to see how his/her students argues to support their sides and principles. But, the danger of having a debate is students tend to give arguments that can be considered as personal attacks to each other. Therefore, the teacher must be cautious and observant to prevent this from happening.

Facilitating and hosting a game in the class

May tatlong segundo lamang sila upang magsulat at sumagot. Sa huli, ang may pinakamataas na puntos ay siyang magkakamit ng dagdag na puntos sa long quiz.

Hosting a game in the class from time to time make the students like the subject and be excited for the next meeting. It is because in having a game, they have a temporary rest from discussion and group activities and sets their mind for fun and enjoyment. The pressure of studying and learning are lifted from them.

WEEK 12February

10, 201010

All classes of 4th year in Filipino are temporarily halted in this day. Ma’am Fastino, as being the chairman of the event, used the time on the orientation of 4th year students for the JS Prom next week. She also stated the rules and guidelines for the occasion.

(We are all required to attend the event to assist the teachers while the program is ongoing. We are given tasks to perform on the date of the Prom. Because Ma’am Faustino is the chairman of the occasion and I’m his student teacher, I was assigned as the head of the student teachers who will attend the JS Prom.)

Input on group presentation

I have also utilized written recitation as a motivational technique. This kind of motivation, though less in noise and action, can also be a good energizer for students. In this case, after having the students write their answer on the paper and collected it, I have randomly picked five students to go in front and explain their answers.

10 Starting this day, all 4th year classes are in a shortened period wherein every hour will be reduced to 40 minutes. This is because every afternoon, starting 2:00 PM, all 4 th year students will be practicing the flow of activities in the JS Prom and the processional.

Sometimes, when the discussion is good and students are very active in answering and giving their thoughts, group presentations may not be finished in one day. The only solution for this is to continue the lesson in the next day provided that the teacher will make a short review of what were tackled yesterday so as to connect it to the present discussion.

February 13, 2014

All classes of the 4th year students are suspended for the whole day because of the practice of JS Prom in the Valencia Hall. We student teachers assisted the teachers in organizing the students and monitoring them so they cannot leave the gymnasium while the practice is ongoing.

In essay type tests, the teacher must be very wise in grading students’ answers. Because it is accepted that all opinions are correct, the teacher, therefore, must base his/her grade of essays on how the students organized and present his/her ideas, what ideas he/she presented, and what supporting ideas or aguments did he/she gave.

To motivate students to perform better in group activities, the teacher must set a prize for the group with the highest score. For my experience, for every group activities that I have conducted, I always exempt from the quiz the group who have gained the highest score. Because of this, students see the group activity not only as requirement in the discussion but also as a competition of some kind. They tend to brainstomr better ways and techniques on how they will perform their task.

For character profiling, it is better to choose only the main characters and those characters who have an impact in the story. The short story Tigre! Tigre! contains so many minor characters. I have only picked the major and important characters to let the students focus on. Also, in character profiling, the unique trait of a character that will set them apart from other characters must be discovered and discussed.``

Oftentimes in literary pieces, there is an existing symbol within that if the reader is not an analytical one, he/she will not discover it. This is the case in the story Tigre! Tigre! 11 From this day forward, the last week of regular class schedule of 4th year students, Ma’am Faustino told me that she wants to be the one who will discuss the last two chapters of El Filibusterismo because these two chapters are very critical and important in understanding the whole novel. Furthermore, she will also evaluate the novel in the class and discuss its values, moral, implications, and principles as a whole. Hence, I will not be teaching anymore to the 4th year students and I will just do other responsibilities as student teacher.

Therefore, as much as possible, I have spent most of my time in the faculty checking the projects and journals of the 4th year students so that the grades for these requirements can be recorded. I have also started giving equivalent grades to the scores of my students in the class record. In checking the projects, I have strictly follwed the rubrics that I have made for grading it.
