Every time Hari Raya Aidilfitri comes around, we revel in the joy of forgiveness, family and friends. The month of Ramadan with its practice of fasting builds one’s empathy for the less fortunate, and helps one focus on the things that truly matter. In the spirit of the season, all of us in Berjaya Clubs wish all our members Selamat Hari Raya and happy holidays!

Kicking off this issue is a mysterious, whimsical look at the famous WOW! signal that was detecting from space decades ago. Does it indicate intelligent life in outer space? On the other hand, there are plenty mysteries on earth, especially in our ocean depths. To get your feet wet in these explorations, we take a look at several beautiful, intriguing sea caves. These natural rock formations carved out by ocean waves are awe-inspiring.

Closer to home, we have a delectable feature on teh tarik, a short history of the tennis racket that we take for granted, and a look at whether our love of tablets is killing off our reliance on laptops. The answer may surprise you.

Speaking of surprises, stay abreast of the exciting goings-on at all our clubs, as well as reports on the delightful events that have taken place in the last quarter. There’s always something happening for your enjoyment and enrichment at your favourite club. So enjoy your read and we’ll see you at the club!

Have you heard of the WOW! signal? An American

astronomer named Jerry R. Ehman detected a narrowband radio signal that was quite strong, back in 15 August 1977. At the time, he was working at the radio telescope popularly known as Big Ear, where he was on the SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) project. The Wow! signal became quite popular in the media then and also on popular social media platforms today.

The signal is believed to have originated near the Chi Sagittarii star group, northwest of the globular cluster of M55 in the constellation Sagittarius. If you don’t believe in the existence of extra-terrestrial beings, popularly known as

aliens, the WOW! signal will definitely give you food for thought.

The signal didn’t last for long; only 72 seconds. This means that the window was quite small and very difficult to detect. Big Ear

was only able to observe it once, and detecting it again has actually been a bit of a problem. Astronomers have tried to find or recover the signal but their efforts have all been in vain.

Ehman wrote the comment “WOW!” after he had circled the signal on the computer printout. That’s how the signal got its name. Ehman was amazed by the close resemblance to what the researchers expected an alien intelligence signal to look like.

What Makes the Signal Unique? The signal has really challenged the beliefs of many sceptics who doubted in the existence of aliens. Here are a few reasons why this signal is actually quite different.

After checking the frequency of the signal, it was found to be resonating at 1,420 MHz. This frequency is on the so-called “hydrogen line”, where any intelligent species would likely transmit their data. The fact that the WOW! signal exists on the hydrogen line strongly suggests that the signal is an intelligent transmission. On earth, that frequency is reserved for astronomical research.

The signal also shifts in intensity over the 72-second window in which it was observed. This is something a naturally occurring radio wave does not do.

The fact that the signal originated near the Chai Sagittarii star group also suggests signs of extra-terrestrial intelligence,

because the density of stars there increases the likelihood of finding life-sustaining planets there.

Locating the SignalLocating the signal is actually quite difficult, and the fact that the Big Ear telescope uses two feed horns made it even more difficult to exactly point out its location. The horns are used to search for signals, and each horn can be seen pointing in different directions.

The WOW! signal was actually only detected on one horn. The other horn was unable to detect the signal. The data was processed in a way which makes it quite difficult to determine which of the two horns the signal entered.

08Cover Story

After careful evaluation of the signal, it was found to only have originated approximately 2.5 degrees south of the Chi Sagittarii star group and also approximately 3.5 degrees south of the ecliptic plane. Nevertheless, it has never been found again.

Responses to the Signal The WOW! signal celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2012 and it attracted quite a big response. It received about 10,000 Twitter messages.

Scientists have actually tried to increase the chances of finding intelligent life in space by decoding and transmitting various videos by celebrities and also tweets that were crowd-sourced. This is done with attaching a header with a repeating sequence to the transmission, so as to enable the recipient to know that the messages are truly intentional, and from another life form that is intelligent, as opposed to a random naturally occurring radio wave. The hope is that alien intelligences might encounter our messages and respond to them.

Other Controversial Evidence for Extra-terrestrial LifeThe Wow! signal is not the only evidence strongly indicating the existence of extra-terrestrial life. There have been numerous controversial evidences that actually support the existence of alien life forms.

In 2003, some Italian scientists came to a conclusion that traces of sulphur on the moon Europa might be a sign of alien life. The Galileo space probe detected these compounds along with further evidence of an ocean beneath the moon’s icy crust, which is volcanically-warmed.

The sulphur signatures, once analysed clearly, resembled waste products of bacteria that are locked

into the surface ice of lakes in Antarctica on earth. The bacteria are actually able to survive beneath the ice.

Over the years, there have been many instances similar to the WOW! signal that clearly show that there might be life beyond earth. It is quite unclear whether this is actually true, but recent evidence makes a strong case in support of the matter.

After much debate, the question still remains, is the WOW! signal a transmission from ancient aliens? It is still unprovable whether the signal was a message from aliens in a distant galaxy or just a natural phenomenon.

9The New Gen

Laptops are vital gadgets, but there are several features that a

tablet possesses that you might never find in a laptop. A tablet is basically a portable notebook that is built inside a mobile operating system platform. It can be more advantageous as compared to a laptop. Here are 4 major reasons why.

1. PortabilityTablets are light and thin; even though the difference isn’t that great anymore, when you compare laptops and tablets, tablets are lighter, thinner and more

portable. Laptops, on the other hand, are heavier and you need a bag to carry them all day long. In the case of a tablet, you just need to pick it up and walk out.

2. Less cumbersomeIf you have ever made an attempt to work on a laptop when you are riding inside a taxi or during a flight, then you are aware what we mean. It’s always a herculean task lugging the device out. Anytime you want to set the device on, you must look for a relatively flat and stable surface. Whenever you want to type the keyboard or view

the display, you must flip the laptop wide open. You can never operate a laptop when you are walking around. A tablet is quite easy to use; you can just turn it on and use it in just about any environment.

3. Battery lifeTablets have longer battery lives as compared to laptops. Even though laptops are improving as far as battery life is concerned, they still struggle to work all day long; they rarely work effectively for more than several hours. Tablets last longer in comparison to

10The New Gen

laptops. They can go on all day long.

4. FlexibilityA tablet is much more effective in terms of flexibility. On most occasions, tablets can perform most of the roles that are carried out by laptops. But again, tablets are more advantageous because they are more versatile. Most of them can shoot videos and take photos; in addition to that, they can allow video conferencing and video chats. They also work as e-readers and are capable of accessing an entire library of books at a go.

The twist With all the advantages of tablets as compared to laptops, why are tablet sales declining? Some misinterpret these numbers as the resurgence of laptops versus tablets. However, the real cause of the decline of the tablet is the rise of the phablet.

As smartphones have increased in size, they have taken over much of the general functions of tablets, such as media consumption and gaming. This trend seems to be relegating

tablets to niche markets where a large touchscreen is truly necessary.

In the end, tablets, laptops and smartphones have their place, and it is not a matter of which will be the winner, but which is right for your purpose. Put another way, each of them is a winner in its particular use case. So use your gadgets with confidence!

11Travel & Discovery

There are so many wonders of nature on our beautiful

planet and to experience them, one has to travel the world. Sea caves are just some of those wonders. They are usually created by the majestic waves of the seas and oceans as they interact with the surfaces of cliffs along the coastlines. The continuous wave action creates caves that are amazingly unique and wonderful. In the watery labyrinths of sea caves, several recreational activities can be undertaken such as kayaking, scuba diving, swimming and photography, among others.

Here are five of the most awe-inspiring sea caves around the world that would be worth visiting at least once in your lifetime:

geological features that have an uncanny resemblance to a cathedral. It is made up of basalt columns that are hexagonal in shape, the reason for its naturally arched ceiling. In Gaelic, the cave is referred to as “Uamh-Binn” which translates to “cave of melody”. Go listen to its beguiling song.

This is truly the epitome of nature’s beauty. It is one of the most exciting places to visit in Samoa and an ideal place to take great photos as you observe sea water being shot up through

4.BLUE GROTTOThe Blue Grotto is one

of the most recognised sea caves in the world due to its beautiful blue water. It is located off Italy’s Capri Island coast. There are guided boat tours for the many visitors who frequent the cave each year.

5. GREAT BLUE HOLEThe Great Blue Hole is

a submerged vertical cave found in the Lighthouse Reef Atoll of Belize. Its clear water makes it the perfect spot for viewing marine life as well as scuba diving. Blue holes were formed as a result of erosion during the ice age when sea levels were much lower than they are now.

13Sports Guide

It is thought that tennis first began in the 12th century, when a game was played in the French royal court

where players used their hands to strike a ball toward each other. This game was known as “paume”, which when translated into English, means “palm”.

The first racquetsSimple racquets were introduced as the game became more widespread in other European royal courts, and its name was changed to “jeu de paume”.

The French players called out “tenez”, which means “play”, and the game began to be known as “royal tennis”

or “real tennis”. Through the early 1870s, a Major Walter Wingfield devised a game based on royal tennis for his guests to play. This became the game of tennis as we know it today.

Since they began to be used instead of bare hands, tennis racquets have, in various forms, been around for hundreds of years. Up until the late 1960s, most of the tennis racquets were built using laminated wood.

The dawn of metal and moreAfter that era, the first steel racquets were launched and popularised by Jimmy Connors, who was a top

American tennis player of that time. A few years on, aluminium was introduced, which allowed for racquets of much lighter weight to be made. As a result, “oversized” racquet heads were popular for the first time.

HISTORY OF THE

TENNISRACQUET HOW IT WENT FROM NOTHING TO OVERSIZE

Major Walter Wingfield inventor of Lawn Tennis

14Sports Guide

Prior to that innovation, racquet heads were about 65 square inches in area. After the inception of the aluminium frame, they jumped in size to about 110 square inches.

Aluminium frames were followed by carbon fibre, boron, titanium, ceramics and glass fibre composites in the early 1980s. Since then, composite frames have become the industry standard.

Size mattersWhile modern racquets differ in weight, length, and head size, those for adults are usually about 27 inches in length, and can weigh from 8 to 12 ounces (without strings). The size of the head is a key determining factor in terms of the racquet’s capabilities. Whereas a larger head provides more power, a smaller one will

allow the player to have more control. Today, heads can vary from 90 to 137 square inches in area.

The strings are also another major aspect of racquets that has seen change over the years. In traditional racquets, cow intestines were the material of choice, and in fact, some modern racquets still use it. This material is truly considered by some to be the best for racquet strings in terms of overall playability. Nevertheless, they break easily and are very expensive, which definitely implies that only professional players tend to use them. Other materials that can be used to make the strings are nylon, which is preferred by amateurs and pros alike, since its not easily prone to breakage. As the game has moved on, so too has its clothing

and equipment, and it is no longer sufficient for serious players to just have any old racquet and a pair of shoes. There are now almost endless choices for racquets, clothing, shoes and other equipment for players to choose from. Some of the equipment is relatively cheap, but other pieces have been specially engineered and are expensive.

Tennis racquets have undergone a lot of improvement over the years and if you look at early photographs, you will see that they were constructed simply from wood. Modern composites and nylon strings have made them incredibly lightweight and very strong, although some players still prefer natural strings, so this is still an option to discover, even as the evolution continues.

15Food & Beverage

An addiction to tea may be the best addiction of all. Teh tarik, the frothy and rejuvenating tea native to Malaysia, will surely get you hooked. Teh tarik is the local beverage of the

country and is commonly served in roadside eateries. Tourists and locals are often seen flocking around these stalls, enjoying a cuppa. Consequently, teh tarik can also be found in upmarket eateries, nowadays.

The pulling effect This special concoction is a perfect mixture of black tea and condensed milk made by pouring alternately between two vessels, from a height, which gives an effect of “pulling” the tea between two mugs. This helps the ingredients mix perfectly and also cools the drink to a temperature suitable for drinking, and is the reason for the name teh tarik, which translates literally as “pulled tea”.

The pouring is often done with entertaining showmanship and requires great skill. Sometimes, the

tea is even pulled above the heads of patrons without spilling a drop on them. This action of tea pouring is an art in itself and several competitions are organised in Malaysia regularly to find the most competent teh tarik maker who makes drinks which are frothy and tasty!

Part of the culture The drink is a major part of the culture of the people of this country. Locals assemble in tea and coffee shops called mamak stalls or “kopitiam” to enjoy a brew amidst gossip or sports. It is said that during colonial times, Indian Muslims set up shop in Malaysia to serve the workers with tea. This tradition continues and today, teh tarik is famous and exported the world over.

Several versions of this drink have originated over the years. Some prefer their tea to be sugarless and unsweetened, while some add a dash of ginger for the added flavour. This tea has a close resemblance to the Indian “chai”.

It’s even good for you! Even more, apart from the exquisite flavour, teh tarik serves several health benefits such as:

Anti-ageingTea helps in reducing the signs of ageing such as wrinkles and age spots.

Anti-allergenicExasperated by a bout of sniffles? Drink teh tarik. It gives immense relief from cold and even allergic reactions. Some people are known to have this

drink to relieve themselves of a persistent headache as well!

Anti-oxidantTea has natural anti-oxidant properties. This helps prevent deadly degenerative diseases, even cancer.

Showmanship aside, teh tarik is easy to make. It consists of simple ingredients and is often enjoyed by aficionados with breakfast or after lunch. Malaysians especially love to have this drink after a hectic day of work, with guests, or even as a pick-me-up on a busy day.

So, go grab a teh tarik right now to accompany you as you read this newsletter. And believe us when we say, you will go back for a second helping!

Charity @ April 28 April 2016

The hands-on charity drive with Staffield Golf & Country Resort has raised enough contributions

to help lift the burden of Pusat Jagaan Insan Istimewa, Semenyih.

The home, located in a rural area in Semenyih, is occupied by 31 old folks and disabled children. They have been facing less support from the general public and they are now facing difficulties in running the centre. The number of old folks is increasing as well.

The charity visit, with sundries, medical supplies, electrical items and members’ contributions, managed to light up the home. The old folks and children were excited to receive “ang bao” as well. It was a great and memorable day for both the clubs and the home.

Life Skills 4 Kids 10 Jun 2016

Before the school holidays came to an end, BJGCR in collaboration with North Star Alliance organised

“Life Skills 4 Kids”, a workshop that provides a basic foundation in preparing youth for success in life. In total, 17 participants got to practise some essential life skills that will prepare them for school re-opening and life beyond. The fun-filled programme arranged by Teacher May worked to build confidence, teamwork and friendship among the participants. The 45th Mitsumi Technology Golf Competition was held on 14 May 2016 at Bukit Banang

Golf and Country Club. Altogether, 44 participants were involved in this amateur annual competition. The weather was perfect for a day of golf, with the sun shining, and the participants enjoyed their game excellently. The course was kept in superb condition, although a few of our greens were still under renovation. We acknowledge that this tournament could not reach such heights without the assistance of the many volunteers who had donated their time leading up to and during the tournament. Their help was greatly appreciated, especially by Mr Yau Eng Kiong for Mitsumi Technology Batu Pahat itself.
