TAKING A WALK AROUND THE TOWN OF KR[KO

The town of Kr{ko is located where the river Sava valley widens up into the vast Kr{ko fi eld and was set up on both banks of the river. It is the central town of the Posavska region and also its central municipality. The Kr{ko area is easily accessible by motorway (Ljubljana – Zagreb) and regional roads from Celje, Maribor, Novo mesto, as well as with international and local trains. Kr{ko is located 98 km from Ljubljana and 51 km from Zagreb. Population of the Kr{ko municipality: approximately 26,000Population of the town of Kr{ko: 7,059Area: 286.5 km2

Average altitude: 163 m

Kr{ko has a rich history, as it has witnessed the destinies and life stories of many important local personalities. Even today, the renovated cultural and historical buildings in the old part of town tell stories about the lives and achievements of the past.

KR[KO TOWN MUSEUM IN THE VALVASOR COMPLEX

Upon entering Kr{ko visitors are greeted by Valvasor's complex of the three houses of Valvasor, Jarnovi~ and Kaplan, which are the best historical part of the town from an architectural point of view. The Late Renaissance Valvasor house from 1609 was determined in 1894 to have been the house where Janez Vajkard Valvasor (1641 –1693) had spent the last days of his life. Today we know that the actual house is just meters away and is also an important part of the town's history, as it is where writer, lawyer and politician Janez Mencinger (1838 –1912) used to live. In 1966, a statue of Valvasor made by the academic sculptor

and medallist Vladimir [tovi~ek was erected in front of the Valvasor house. The complex also houses rooms of the Kr{ko Town Museum where you can visit the permanent exhibition of sculptor and medallist Vladimir [tovi~ek, who contributed some of his work to the Kr{ko municipality for the Valvasor house specifi cally. The Kr{ko Town Museum will host an exhibition on Slovene deportees during the renovation of the Brestanica castle: the exhibition presents German imperialistic claims of the Slovene territory. The museum will also host an exhibition on Trappist monks, an order of reformed Cistercians with strict rules who also took part in the development of the area (chocolate, cheese, liqueur, fi rst power plant, etc.). The museum also displays handicraft products of the border area as part of the project Honey and gingerbread trail between Kr{ko and Zagreb. In 2011, an exhibition on Josipina Ho~evar (1824 –1911) will be introduced (she was a great benefactor of the city in the 19th century) and in 2013, an exhibition on the life and works of Adam Bohori~ (c. 1520 –1598) and Jurij Dalmatin (c. 1546

–1589) will follow.

HO^EVAR’S SQUARE

The town of Kr{ko has developed into an important university center in the Posavska region, as Ho~evar's square is home to the Faculty of Logistics and Faculty of Energetics, located in a building from1877 which functioned as a civil public school. It was built by the architect Martin Ho~evar and his statue can be seen in the middle of the square.During Valvasor's lifetime, the square was already known for its St. John the Evangelist church, which got its present features in 1894 when it became the town's parish church. In 1899, it was further decorated with three medallions, two lunettes and a statue of Maria, all works of the sculptor Ivan Zajc who created the Pre{eren monument in Ljubljana a few years later. His university education was enabled by Josipina Ho~evar.

MENCINGER HOUSE

This residential Baroque building is where writer, cultural worker, politician and lawyer dr. Janez Mencinger lived between 1882 in 1912. The facade features a memorial plaque dedicated to Mencinger and in the nearby park of important Kr{ko residents are his tombstone and grave. According to the latest research, the southern part of the house is where polymath Janez Vajkard Valvasor spent his late years and died here in the autumn of 1693.

TOWN PARK

The town park is dedicated to important personalities who have played an important role in the development of the town and the area. In the part of the park known as the »Meritorious citizens grove« we can see psyhcologist Mihajlo Rostohar, academic sculptor and medallist Vladimir [tovi~ek, scholar and grammarian Adam Bohori~, translator and author Jurij Dalmatin and botanist Franc Vardjan. Their statues were made by renowned male and female sculptors and the statue of Josipina Ho~evar, an important benefactor, will be unveiled in 2011. The park was once a graveyard located adjacent to the Holy Cross burial church, which still stands today, but hasn't served its religious purpose since the fi rst years after World War II. After thorough renovation in 2003, it is known as the Park room and it organizes several cultural and other events and people can also get married there. The park is also home to the Ho~evar mausoleum, an octagonal

Neo-Gothic chapel with a pyramid roof, where the married couple Martin and Josipina Ho~evar, important benefactors to Kr{ko who gave their money to various charity purposes, are burried. The western part of the park is graced by the memorial for deportees and victims of World War II, there is a water fountain nearby as well as the Capuchin monastery with the Kr{koValvasor library.

KR[KO OLD TOWN CENTER

The town of Kr{ko is located between the river Sava and valley hills. Its important strategic position gave meaning to the town throughout the centuries; on March 5, 1477 the square of the time was declared a town. Only a few rocks remain from the former castle, and the town center is defi ned by numerous interesting buildings, famous for their architecture and importance to the town. In the southern part of the center, a short stroll from Dalmatin street, awaits the beautiful Secession style house which was once known as the Engelsberger shop and the inhabitants of Kr{ko are still guarded by Merkur, the patron of trade. In front of the municipality building which has served its purpose since the 19th century lies the Cesta kr{kih `rtev street with the most beautifully decorated Secession facade of the Župnek house (also known as the Scagneti house after the architect). Carefully designed ornaments, a rounded balcony and a picturesque front door are parts of the most beautiful Secession house built around the 1900s.

KR[KO VALVASOR LIBRARY

Kr{ko Valvasor library has been the central library of the Kr{ko municipality since 1965. Since 1988, its home has been the Capuchin monastery. Throughout the years, the library evolved into a modern cultural, educational, informational and social center of the area, whose goals are providing and ensuring a library for all generations. The library is dedicated to homeland studies and is very active in lifelong education, organizing different bibliopedagogic activities for children and adults as well as cultural events for children, the youth and adults. While fulfi lling their mission they cooperate with educational, local and other institutions and societies. The collection currently consists of about 145,000 units. There is also a Speedway room in the library, where a permanent special exhibition called Speedway in Slovenia is located. This is the only publicly accessible collection in Slovenia of this type and it contains numerous artifacts, such as motorbikes, motorcycle gear, start numbers, trophies, etc. The artifacts tell a story of a more than half a century old tradition of Slovene speedway, certain racers and past events which helped shape this special and interesting sport. You can also watch short fi lms from the history of Slovene speedway.

CAPUCHIN MONASTERY AND ITS LIBRARY

Capuchins came to Kr{ko in 1644 and needed a libary to work in. The splendid Baroque Capuchin library is still located on the top fl oor of the monastery, next to the modern Valvasor library. The more than 300 years old library keeps around 1500 books, among them works of Janez Svetokri{ki. The library was renovated between 1980 and 1984 and is open to the public.

Both institutions take care of valuable cultural heritage and invite people to visit the library's rich collection.

JOHN THE EVANGELIST CHAPEL

Next to the Capuchin monastery there is a small roadside chapel, dedicated to the town's patron saint John the Evangelist since 2004. His statue for the altar was made by Vladimira [tovi~ek.

ST. ROSALIE’S CHURCH

St. Rosalie's church is located amongst trees on a hill plane above the old town center and was built as a memorial for the plague which was common in Kr{ko in the 17th century. It was built as a thank you to St. Rosalie for saving the town from the plague. The side altars depict St. Rok (guardian against the plague) and St. Nicholas, patron saint of sailors. Valvasor mentions this in his The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola from

1689. The altar of St. Nicholas is now the altar of St. Anton Pu{~avnik. The church has one of the most valuable and best preserved wooden ceilings, and with 84 cassettes it is one of the largest and most beautiful wooden ceilings in Slovenia and the only one preserved in the surrounding area. There is a group of 9 cassettes in the middle of the ceiling depicting the entire fi gures of popular saints St. Catherine, St. Ellen, St. Lucia, St. Apollonia, St. Rosalie, St. Cecilia, St. Ursula, St. Margaret and St. Barbara.

Its greatest architectural value is the courtyard arcade, and the parish church of the Mother of Sorrows in Leskovec pri Kr{kem was built at the same time. Above the main gate there is a relief of the coat of arms of the Auerspergs. The castle is closed for tourist visits at the moment, as preparations for its renovation are taking place. The former castle park with exotic trees is home to a memorial landmark to Alfonz Pavlin (1853 –1942), renowned Slovene botanist and son of the castle's keeper.

ANASTAZIJ GRÜN MAUSOLEUM

The mausoleum of the poet and politician count Anton Auersperg – Anastazij Grün, built in a classicistic, historical manner is located near [rajbarski turn castle. The plans for the mausoleum were made in 1877 by the castle architect Konrad Lueff.
