Taking Students Outside The Classroom

Module Overview
• In groups of 2 or 3, undertake a piece of research on any aspect of Sheffield History between 1743 and 1918
• Produce an un-assessed poster on your research to be displayed to the public
• Must use primary source material
• Process of studying the Sheffield history linked to five outside visits – one mandatory and four optional
Second workshop takes place in the Local Studies Library at Sheffield’s Central Library (Just over the road from Hallam).
Students start their research by looking at local books and primary sources.
Students given the option to go to Sheffield Archives with tutors to learn how to use the service and continue their research.
Many students attend independently in their own time (22 attended on a single day!)

Heads around Sheffield centre for around a mile, pointing out buildings, memorials, cultural sites, and former industry in Sheffield centre (And much more)

Evaluation Points
• At the start of the module 74% of students had never used an archive.
• Only 11% had not used archives by the end of the module.
• Only 8% of students had used a library outside of Hallam for their studies at the start. This was 86% by the end of the module.
• Confidence in locating and using primary sources increased from 33% to 80% of students by the end of the module.
