1833 - the Russian Tzar Nicholas I signed a decree on establishing the “Imperial St. Vladimir University” in Kiev.

July 15th, 1834 - the University accepted the 62 of its first students. At that time, there was only one faculty – the Faculty of Philosophy, comprised of the department of History & Philology and the department of Physics & Mathematics.

1835 - the Faculty of Law was set up

1841 - foundation of the Medicine Faculty. The Faculty of Philosophy was later divided into two separate entities. This structure of the University lasted up until 1917.

Mykhailo Maksymovych, a professor of Moscow University and a prominent scholar of history, linguistics and folklore and a close friend of N. Gogol and T. Shevchenko, was the first Rector of Kyiv University.

1837-1842 -the principal building of the University was built by a renowned Russian architect V. Beretti, in Russian Classicism style.

1845-1846 - upon his graduation from St. Petersburg's Academy of Fine Arts, Taras Shevchenko returned to Kyiv and in 1845-1846 was engaged with the Archaeological and Ethnographic Commission at Kyiv University.

Autumn of 1918 - the University became a center for Bolshevik students’activity due to which it was temporary closed down.

April 23rd , 1919 - the beginning of a new period in the University’s history - the Soviet authorities re-opened the St. Vladimir University, changing its name to "Kyiv University“.

March 1939 - the country celebrated the 125th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko and the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the USSR named Kyiv University after the great poet.

1941 - Kyiv State Taras Shechenko University became the third largest university in the USSR.

World War II - the government issued a decree on the University evacuation. First, it moved to Kharkiv where it temporarily merged with Kharkiv State University. Then, both universities were evacuated to Kzyl-Orda.

1959-1984 - despite the harsh post-war situation, the staff of Kyiv University persisted in developing research and education. For some 25 years, the number of the University graduates exceeded 70,000.

Kyiv Taras Shevchenko University was awarded the status of a National University of Ukraine by a Presidential Decree. This status highlights the special role of Kyiv University in Ukrainian education and ensures its administrative autonomy.

November the 25th, 1999 - crucial point for the University’s development : the Presidential Decree “On Kyiv Taras Shevchenko National University” widened the University’s rights and independence.

• The University has 68 research laboratories (sectors) equipped with up-to-date set-ups and equipment, including multifunctional zond microscopes, nuclear power microscopes, x-ray difractometers, etc.

• The University operates 11 complex research programmes.

• New principles of map design have been developed to ensure the design of new series of specialized maps.

• New methods for mathematical simulation of effective thermoelastic qualities; effective electrical conductivity and production of multi component fluid saturated cracked geological medium with internal steam pressure; software for realistic simulation of large neuron nets (~100,000 neurons), due to which the synchronization phenomenon at Parkinson disease has been analyzed.

• The phenomenon of hexoferrite resonators mode splitting under external magnetic field in the range of 75-110 GHz has been investigated.

• Unique apparatus set up has been designed to do the research according to coincidence technique when investigating the spectra of immediate irradiation of nuclear reactions. The set up consists of the blocks of the system “Vector” and the blocks designed at the University.

• Integrated database of sociological data for Ukraine population’s value orientations has been designed. It represents the set of indicators used in fundamental sociology courses taught.

• The framework of multilingual terminology dictionary is designed. The subject matter is transformation and management in the military area.
