LIKELY CAUSES OF INJURY:

VARIABLES TO CONSIDER:
1. Individual strength 2. Gender (& pregnancy)
2. Load size, weight, shape
3. Height of lifting / lowering
4. Distance pushing / pulling / throwing
5. Distance carrying / terrain

QUESTIONS YOU NEED TO ASK (1):
1. Do I really need to move it?
2. Could I use mechanical handling?
3. Do I know how heavy the load is?
4. Can I manage the load?

6. Is my route straight?
7. Is there anything in my way?
8. Have I got the right gloves?

IMPORTANT DON’Ts:
1. DON’T carry sharps close to the body
2. DON’T obstruct your vision
3. DON’T lift to a height from / to the floor – do the lift in stages
4. DON’T make sharp or jerky movements
5. DON’T twist or bend when handling

IMPORTANT DO’s (1):
1. Stand close to the load
2. Feet hip width apart
3. One foot slightly forward pointing in the direction of travel
4. Bend your knees
5. Back “straight” (bum out)
6. Get a good grip
7. Breathe in before lifting
