Case Study (1/8) : Conflict and Change Management

• Competence Transfer & Subcontractors Management

– This client had to reconsider its development, sales and production processes to remain competitive

– In 2008, production had been transferred to a US manufacturer based in China. However this transfer was not fully planned, resulting in two organisations not working together, blaming each other for the difficulties both faced, impacting cost delays and quality

– In January 2010, both parties could no longer work together and TBx was called in to find an alternative production solution

• Result

– Both parties are now working hand in hand extending their agreement to other production plants

– More competences have been transferred to China including strategic procurement

– Further transfers of competences are on the way such as design and development of a new product based on technology developed in UK


Case Study (2/8) : Production & Cost Reduction

• Cost Reduction and Supply Chain Management

– Telecom infrastructure equipment manufacturing industry

– The mission set by our customer was to reduce the cost of the equipment and optimise the Supply chain within 6 months

– None of the equipment were design for production and suppliers had been selected based on engineering requirements rather than prices

– Tough economical context. General shortage of components and closure of the main Tantalum mine in Australia

• Results

– 20% reduction in production costs of the overall systems sold to customers. Up to 28% on individual components

– New product developed with 50% cost reduction compared with previous generation


Case Study (3/8) : Supply Chain and Operation

While at Marconi Networks, our consultant assumed the role of UK Materials Director and was responsible for the telecommunications supply, supporting a £2.5 billion turnover business line while taking control of the spend budget, which was in the region of £1 billion. While in this role our expert delivered cost reductions with material suppliers on multi-million pound contracts, saving £160m across UK, Europe and Far Eastern vendors and oversaw European inventory management, logistics and materials selection, achieving a reduction on projected inventory of £700m within 9 months, by using deferment, order cancellation and disposal/vendor management programmes.

Case Study (4/8): Optimizing Rail infrastructure (Kazakhstan)

The defined goal was to increase the output of production from 2 trains to 3 per day. A Primary assessment indicated that there was sufficient capacity to extract coal, the limitation was with loading and transportation. This involved a reduction of loading and yard movement needed a reduction of turn around time from 18 hours to 14 hours.

Priority Table for Improvement

• Setting corrective action to largest impact in cycle time reduction. The largest impact areas consistently were the least capital intensive.

• Incentive program team for maintaining 3 trains per day, with cost controls.

• Maintain a steady & reliable production With would set the mine as a reliable and cost effective coal supplier.

As a result

• A cost reduction of $4m(USD)per year, $12m over three.

• An increase in production yield at Maikuben resulted in additional $8m (USD) incomes, $32M over three years.


Case Study (5/8) : Coal preparation plant

One of our expert typical assignments has been with Australian Coal Technologies (ACT). ACT was then playing a major role in advanced engineering and design of coal processing plants with 3 plants being design and build for final installation in PR China. Helen played a key part in delivering an AUS$25M Project on behalf of ACT. It followed a strategy that saw most of the engineering and design being outsourced remotely before it came into vogue and which significantly reduced the lead-times to construct and commission the plants. Our consultant’s responsibility was to expertly design and engineer:

Case Study (6/8) : Supply Chain & Operation

As EMEA Supply Chain and Operations Manager at 3Com, our consultant’s main responsibilities were for the sub-contract spend (£140m), demand planning and the Supply Chain organisation, which in turn supported a $1.4 billion Data network business. By rationalising 5 separate business units into 2 new business lines our expert turned what amounted to a 25% loss into a 15% profit, largely by increasing revenue by 60%. Likewise, non-profitable business units were closed and the organisation re-structured to meet the new business requirements, while new systems, processes and procedures were introduced. Our expert was also responsible for managing supply, supporting revenue streams ($1.4 billion) for various business lines in conjunction with regional sales groups, order management and manufacturing operations.

Case Study (7/8) : Avionics & Telecommunication

• Setting Up Production Within an Aerospace Environment

– This project required a complete Supply Chain Strategy and a careful choice of Partners

– Strong requirements from the Civil Aviation Authorities conflicting with the low cost production required by investors and customers.

– Customers all over the world including Dubai, Australia, and Asia.

– Short lead-times with extremely high late penalties (several thousand US$ per day)

Case Study (8/8): EUROCONTOL (VHF 8.33 under FL 195)

The objective of this project is to provide avionics and aircraft retrofit support work in order to support decision-making, planning and implementation activities to the implementation of 8.33 KHz below FL195. One of the main objectives is to provide EUROCONTROL a budget allocation for each type of A/C families impacted (either civil or state A/C) and to give realistic implementation dates for VHF 8.33 kHz below FL 195. It also includes a detailed assessment of airborne and A/C retrofits impact of VHF 8.33 kHz below FL 195 program.
