FIGHT THE SUMMER SLIDE!Did you know that students can lose a tremendous amount of academic progress over the summer? Some studies indicate that students who do not read over the summer can fall up to 20% behind their peers who do.

You and your students can fight the summer slide with the National Summer Reading Challenge put on by USA TODAY and Curriculet. Reading as little as 20 minutes per day can completely reverse the effects of the summer slide.

The National Summer Reading Challenge makes reading fun and engaging for students. Students read USA TODAY articles of their choice on Curriculet. Articles are embedded with questions and multimedia so students continue to practice close reading and informational text skills.

As students read USA TODAY articles, they can earn badges and be entered to win daily and weekly prizes. Beginning June 15, any student who read at least 3 articles in a day is entered to win a pair of Beats headphones and if a student reads 3 articles for 5 days in a row, the student is entered to win an Apple Watch!

As the teacher, all you need to do is show your students how to sign-in and begin reading on Curriculet. Let them know why reading over the summer is important and about the fun and engaging elements of the National Summer Reading Challenge. Let’s get started!

IMPORTANT INFORMATIONParent InvolvementThe National Summer Reading Challenge involves parents to support student reading. Students will be prompted to enter their parent’s email. If parents choose to share their email, then they will receive weekly email updates on their child’s progress. Parent involvement is not required.

PrizesWe’ve offered prizes to encourage students to read more. The daily and weekly prizes are raffled off to students who have met daily and weekly reading challenges. The daily prize is a pair of Beats headphones and the weekly prize is an Apple Watch. Students will be able to see if they’ve been entered to win on their progress page. Terms and condition can be found on the Curriculet site.

Student Progress PageThere is a student progress page where students can track their daily, weekly, and summer reading. They can track how much they’ve read, see the badges they’ve earned, and determine if they’ve been entered to win a prize.

What are the dates of the National Summer Reading Challenge?June 15 – August 31 Students may begin reading articles as early as May 22. However, the first prizes will be awarded beginning the week of June 15.

How do teachers & students get help?Teachers or students who have any issues with signing in, accessing reading, or any other issues should send a message to our support team. Click on Help on the Curriculet site or send an email to [email protected]. Include your name, email, and detailed description of the issue. It is important to practice this with students.

What do teachers need to do to ensure students are successful? The most important thing teachers can do is ensure students know how to log on and are excited about the challenge. Communicating to parents about the program will also help. You can find a sample parent letter here: www.curriculet.com/summer-resources
