The Canadian Teacher’s Federation (CTF) Project Overseas campaign has been in existence for over 50 years and has sent thousands of teachers abroad bringing their skills as educators to help classroom colleagues in the Caribbean, Asia, Latin America and Africa. “The experience was a good networking opportunity and I met teachers from Haiti and other parts of Canada,” he added. EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Continued from C FrontThe people of Haiti provided

a welcoming atmosphere for the visiting teachers.

“They welcomed us and were very happy to see us. The Hai-tians are a proud people.”HUMANITARIAN

Mr. Dallaire’s visit had a hu-manitarian aspect to it.

When he visited Haiti he brought with him over 40 chil-drens’

dresses made by volunteers in this region.

“My colleague, Monica Rus-nak from Timmins, had an idea to create dresses from pillow cases. So with the help of a few friends, they sowed the dresses.

“I took that idea and sent out letters to all the families at school and asked for donations of pillow cases, thread and rib-bons.”

Support for his idea was warmly received and once he received the materials for the dresses he asked Timiskam-ing District Secondary School teacher Jodee Franceour if her students would be willing to make the dresses, and they did.

In addition, NLPS parent vol-unteer Elizabeth Foley sewed a total of 30 dresses and Active1 Source for Sports donated t-shirts for the Haitian children.

Overall he says it may be his last trip overseas as he wants to step back to give other ETFO (Elementary Teachers Federa-tion of Ontario) teachers the opportunity to take part in this “very enriching experience.”
