Lesson planning – what you will deliver and how you will deliver this

Planning and resourcing your lesson with

objectives/outcomes, success criteria, retrieval, presenting new material,

modelling, scaffolding, differentiation, practice, sequencing, skill coverage,

feedback and stickability.

• In the Admin area you will find detailed lesson plans for all 24 topics on the primary site, each of which are also accompanied by a story and a song.

• The lesson plans include starter activities to support retrieval, ideas for presentation of new language, activities for practising all four skills and differentiation ideas and materials for extending and supporting your students.

• Simple straightforward lesson outcomes allow progress to be easily measured both in the lesson and over time by non-specialist language teachers particularly SLT.

• Lesson plans are easy to follow for teachers regardless of their level of language skills.

• Downloadable resources will support students to practise their language knowledge individually or in class.

Presenting and drilling new vocabulary

This might involve printing out flashcards

or putting together presentations, demonstrating the pronunciation of each

word and doing choral repetition or games so students can become familiar

with the vocabulary.

• Find the appropriate unit on Languagenut, either through Vocab Trainer, Topics or Sentence Builders.

• Use the ‘Learn’ screen to present and drill vocabulary in your usual way, as a unit or as per the lesson plan.

• Download and print the flashcards to allow students to revisit and retrieve vocabulary and grammar on a regular basis at any time of the day or at home.

• If you have your own vocabulary, you can upload your own content in the admin area.

• Vocabulary, translations and audios are already prepared, so you don’t need to search for appropriate ones online.

• All audios are recorded by native speakers, which helps students get used to different native speakers.

• Cards can be displayed with or without the target language and audios.

• Can be used on the board whole class, on individual devices or at home as part of flipped learning or revision.

Creating resources

This might involve making your own

worksheets, powerpoint presentations, puzzles, songs or paper-based activities

to practise vocabulary.

• Present the ready made flashcards (which can also be enlarged) from the appropriate unit’s ‘Learn’ section on IWB or individual devices.

• Use songs and stories in the admin area to support the unit you are using.

• Instantly create printable resources, such as wordsearches, language dice, vocab tables or dominoes in the admin area.

• It takes only a few clicks to create the resources you want – no more laboriously creating them yourself or trawling the internet to find ones with the right content and using an online spell checker before using them.

• You can create resources using our vocabulary, your own (for vocab trainer and sentence builders), or custom units by mixing and matching.

• Flashcards can be downloaded and laminated for students to have their own sets for practise at home, in between lessons or at play time.

Differentiation

This might involve creating different

activities for students of varying abilities or assigning extension work to students

who finish early.

• Assign different tasks to individuals or groups within a class or cohort, depending on how much support and challenge they need – for example, in writing, a lower ability student could do the Blast Off game while a higher ability level student could practise the same unit with Word Pod. ‘Need a hint’ is available on all skills.

• Each lesson plan contains activities to support

differentiated delivery in the classroom.

• Time is not wasted by having to create separate resources for students with additional needs. Individual challenge at the appropriate level is provided.

• Some students can be stressed, if they know that they are completing different activities to others in their class. By working on different devices using Languagenut it is not obvious to others in the class thus removing that possible stress.

• Students can use the hint button on all skills if they need help.

Getting students to learn and memorise vocabulary

This might involve vocabulary practice in class or giving students word lists to learn for homework. You might need to record yourself saying the relevant vocab and

have it available for students to access at home. You will need to model different

techniques for committing vocabulary to memory as all students learn in different

ways.

• Assign students a range of reading, listening, writing and speaking/talking games to ‘learn and practise’ vocabulary either in class or at home before or after the lesson.

• Each lesson plan contains ideas for how to model techniques to support students to commit key vocabulary to memory.

• Set up a mini competition/challenge board to encourage healthy competition amongst students.

• Our games allow students to practise the vocab across all 4 key skills and develop their independent learning skills as well as supporting flipped learning.

• Our different games appeal to all learning styles to enable your students to ‘find’ their preferred style.

• The tracking system allows you to check which students have completed the learning and track their progress straightaway.

Speaking/Talking activities This could involve the teacher modelling the pronunciation of vocabulary followed

by choral repetition.

Students might be involved in pair work,

groupwork or working individually with the teacher to practise pronunciation.

• Each lesson plan contains suggestions for how to practise speaking/talking in the classroom.

• Assign students our speaking vocab games, which are all recorded by different native speakers, to practise pronunciation and recall, either in class on individual devices or as homework.

• Practise pronunciation using suggestions in the lesson

plans and allow your students to record their voices to practise their pronunciation.

• You can easily add your own content for the Vocab Trainer and Sentence Builders.

• Our voice recognition software marks students’ pronunciation and shows errors allowing you to set speaking activities for homework.

• Some students lack confidence and feel anxious speaking in class so being able to set speaking activities for homework allows such students to practise in the comfort of their own surroundings and reduces any stress.

• Audios for all vocabulary and phrases are provided by a native speaker to support the teacher in the classroom regardless of their language ability.

Listening activities Students will normally listen in class, or on

an individual device, to a recording of a native speaker and answer a variety of

questions.

You may use songs or stories in your

lessons to reinforce listening skills and enhance engagement.

• Use the ‘Learn’ section to practise listening and saying the vocab.

• Students listen to the words on the noughts and crosses game and write the correct translation on a mini whiteboard.

• Play snap by asking students to stand up if they think it is correct or not.

• In Sentence Builders, the dictation game allows the students to practise the sound spelling link. The snail button also allows for students to slow down the language they hear.

• Use the song at the end of the lesson or as part of the

lesson to reinforce the vocab drilled in the lesson.

• No need to spend hours searching for suitable listening material for your students. Listening activities spoken by native speakers, with the option to see the spoken word, are built into all our lesson plans.

• Listening activities spoken by native speakers, with the option to see the spoken word, are built into all our lesson plans.

• Ready made songs with catchy tunes which your students will love to sing along to.

• Stories with pictures and optional text in the target language and English, supports literacy across the curriculum.

Reading activities Students normally read words or short

phrases for homework or during the lesson, either on their own or with a

partner. Different activities, games or questions are used to assess

comprehension. The teacher might display the written word for students to

read and repeat in the lesson to practise pronunciation.

• Choose the topic and practise the words on the ‘Learn’ section.

• Use matching pairs against the clock to see who is the quickest to match them up.

• Follow this up with playing pairs using the separate word and picture cards printed out.

• Discuss common errors and misconceptions in the lesson and assign the same task again to see if they can do it quicker.

• Students can use their reading skills in games that involve single words, short phrases or more complex sentences. In some games the audio is also present, allowing students to practise 2 skills at once.

• Printable flashcards showing pictures and word separately allow all vocab to be practised out the lesson time.

Writing activities You might get your students to copy out

vocab or to draw pictures and label them. You might ask them to write a paragraph

about a particular topic.

• Download the vocab from the admin area and stick this in the students’ books or download pictures for students to stick in their books and label in the target language.

• Use the story for the appropriate topic and explore the words which you can substitute and create your own paragraphs and stories. Use the individual pictures and students work on words or short phrases to go with these.

• You can set weaker students writing exercises on Blast off whilst more able students do Skyrise or Word Pod.

• Supports students who take time to take down vocabulary.

• Differentiated tasks can be set using the same lesson content.

• Encourages creativity with endless possibilities which can stem from the stories and songs and have a direct impact upon literacy across the curriculum.

• All written tasks are marked automatically saving time for the teacher and supporting the teacher who lacks confidence marking written work.

Translation practice

This might involve creating and marking

worksheets for students to translate sentences into and from the target

language.

• Assign students one of our Sentence Building games to help them move beyond simple words and phrases, with varying levels of challenge and support.

• Our intelligent software marks translations automatically, allowing for alternative accepted answers, so you don’t waste class or prep time marking dozens of translations

• Mistakes are highlighted in red so students can try to correct their own errors.

Grammar Practice

This might involve grammar worksheets,

either in class or as homework.

• Use the video link to explain your chosen grammar rule in detail.

• Practice the grammar point on ‘Learn’ and use the gap

fill game to drill this by asking students to give answers on a white board and one student comes out to type in the answer.

• You can then assign students the grammar and verb conjugation games for French, German, Spanish and English either in class on individual devices or as homework

• Our interactive games make grammar fun, encouraging students to practise, which is important for language production.

• Links to BBC Bitesize also supports home learning and different learning styles.

• All grammar and verb conjugation exercises are marked automatically, saving you time and supporting the teacher in the classroom regardless of their language ability.

Recycling and Retrieving vocabulary This might involve revisiting language that has been taught previously and checking what students can recall from their long-

term memory. This might be done as a lesson starter or just mini challenge.

Rewards might be given to reward speed of retrieval.

• Use the Test function for the appropriate vocabulary as front of house teaching to revisit past learning. Students answer in book or on whiteboards.

• Assign students independent appropriate vocabulary or grammar to recall learning and ask them to do Practice/Test or just Test. Encourage students to record timings and try to improve next time they do the vocabulary.

• Students are not alerted to the topic or type of vocabulary they are being asked to recall as the title of the assigned task can be written by the teacher eg ‘Week 1 Test 1’.

• On the mobile app only, students can be forced just to take the test which really does show their level of recall in a test situation.

• Bespoke vocabulary can be uploaded to test individual recall and address gaps in learning.

Checking retention of language and

recall with vocab/spelling tests

This might involve translation to/from the target language of words and phrases,

often as a weekly mini test in class.

• Assign students one or more of our vocab tests for the unit they have been practising – these are like the games but don’t offer hints or multiple tries.

• Students can test their knowledge across all 4 key skills, not just reading and writing.

• Tests are marked automatically so students get instant feedback – no more swapping papers in class to mark, or you having to mark dozens of tests each week. Covid friendly marking.

• Scores are automatically recorded and kept in a central area easily accessible to the teacher and for meetings with parents.

Setting homework and independent assignments

You might spend time making separate homework activities and devising assignments for your students to

complete at home which involves mainly written work.

• Once you have practised the relevant content in class you can assign activities in any skill to individuals, groups of students or a whole class to complete at home on their chosen device.

• You can set a message to prompt your students to complete the homework.

• These will be automatically marked and the marks will be sent to you along with a list of words which are causing problems which you use to inform your planning for the next lesson and avoid misconceptions.

• Save time not only having to devise appropriate homework tasks and assignments across all 4 skills but also marking these.

• Students are prompted and reminded when to complete the tasks by.

• Students can work on games at home at their own pace thus encouraging independent learning. They may even choose to learn a new language.

Marking and giving feedback

You will take in work done by students and make appropriate corrections. Give

students feedback either by comment or a grade.

• Once you set a student an activity to do, they will receive instant feedback after completion. They will be given an opportunity to have another attempt at any they got wrong.

• If you set a speaking activity the voice recognition software will automatically mark your student’s recording.

• Tests are marked automatically so students get instant feedback – no more swapping papers in class to mark, or you having to mark dozens of tests each week. Covid friendly marking.

• Scores are automatically recorded and kept in a central area easily accessible to the teacher and for meetings with parents.

Recording & Monitoring Student Progress

This might involve recording students’ test scores in a spreadsheet or physical mark book, then analysing the data to create

student reports.

• See students’ results in the admin area, either as a class or individually, and download as a spreadsheet that you can copy into your mark book or print out to show parents

• Use the Diagnostics feature to analyse which topics and skills your students need to practise more.

• You can quickly get a picture of how each class and individual student is doing, in however much detail you would like – from a general overview of all topics, or in-depth results divided by skill on a particular unit.

• Our Diagnostics feature analyses the data for you, saving you time, so you can see at a glance what needs to be revised.

Celebrating student engagement You might create your own certificates or award house points for students who are regularly engaging with activities you set for homework or as independent learning.

• In the admin area you can create individual certificates for students to celebrate improved engagement or consistent engagement with the activities you set. You can also praise students for the number of medals they achieve.

• You can also set a class/cohort/school competition based on the number of points achieved.

• Printable certificates allow you to reward students in class or assemblies.

• Live league tables can be displayed on screens around the school and these are reset every 30 days.
