Put Our Dreams On The Altar! And He said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get

thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one

of the mountains which I will tell thee of. [Genesis 22:2]

e know the story of Abraham following God’s direction in Take

now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get

thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt

offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of

(Genesis 22:2).

God had promised Abraham a son for many years and finally when he

was one hundred years old, Abraham and Sarah had Isaac. Then in this

verse, God tells Abraham to sacrifice the boy. We know how the story

goes, Abraham obeyed God, and then God stopped him at the last minute.

There are many messages we can get from this story about obedience and

trust, but I think one additional message for us is that in our hearts and

minds, we need to take that thing that is important to us and be prepared

to put it on the altar.

If we really trust God we need to take our dreams and say “God this is

what I really want, but I am giving it to you. Whatever Your will is, I can

accept it.” I believe that God puts our hopes and dreams in our hearts, and

He will help us achieve them, but He wants us to keep our priorities in

order.

Dear LORD, we submit our desires to you. If it is Your will, help us achieve and realize our hopes and dreams, and if You have other plans, we thank you for that as

well. In Jesus’ name we pray. AMEN.

THE REAL SOUL FOOD

uring these Summer/Fall months, many of us have

been to or on our way to weddings, family reunions,

and other special events where food will be served.

Many times we will hear the expression do they have any soul

food ? And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That

man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God

(Luke 4:4).

Just as our physical bodies need daily food and nourishment

to stay strong, so does our spiritual body need daily

nourishment from God’s Word. Blessed are they which do

hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled

(Matthew 5:6).

In this fast-paced society in which we live, it’s very easy to

get so busy that we forget breakfast, lunch, etc. but hunger will

compel us to eat…so it is with our SOUL! Those who are

hungry for God will take time out to read, listen, or

absorb/consume God’s Word every day, in other

words…partake of the REAL soul food. So read your Bible

and pray daily, fill up on the Real Soul Food to stay strong in

the LORD.

Please remember God loves you and do too!

This Week in Black History

The Coloured Hockey League…

The sport of hockey has roots that date back to ancient Egypt and Greece, with varying incarnations throughout the generations. Ice hockey developed in the north due to the wintry conditions there, and in 1895, an all-Black league was started in Nova Scotia, Canada.

The Coloured Hockey League featured as many as a dozen teams and 400 players who hailed from Canada’s Maritime Provinces. In the League, players from Nova Scotia, New

Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island competed against one another. Africville, a Black settlement for escaped and freed slaves in Halifax, was home to one of the league’s more popular teams, the Africville Seasides. The Seasides won back-to-back championships in 1901 and 1902.

Historians and sports writer brothers George and Darrill Fosty released the book Black Ice: The Lost History of the Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes, 1895-1925, which focuses on the rise and ending of the League.

In the book, the Fosty brothers assert that Halifax Eureka player Eddie Martin was the inventor of the slapshot, the most difficult shot in hockey. While Darrill Fosty says that fact cannot be simply proven, the League was the first to allow hockey players to lift their sticks beyond their waist, thus helping the innovative shot to evolve. The League also pioneered the practice of a goalie leaving his feet to block a hockey puck.

Despite racism and financial hardships, the League lasted quite a while until officially ending operations in 1930. But despite the League’s contribution to the game, little in the way of records or monuments exist in honor of Black Canadian hockey players.

The hockey documentary, Black Ice, was also produced and directed by George and Darril Fosty. It won the best short film documentary award at the 10th Annual Roxbury Film Festival in Boston, Massachusetts.

Thought for the Week

You are what you eat. (JEAN ANTHELME BRILLAT-SAVARIN, IN 1826)

ZUCCHINI HASH BROWNS (makes 6 patties)

Zucchini are in season! This is an easy recipe and a tasty way to get a vegetable in at breakfast, brunch or dinner!

INGREDIENTS:

2 zucchini squash 1 teaspoon dried oregano

Salt, to taste ¼ teaspoon garlic powder

½ cup parmesan cheese, grated ¼ teaspoon black pepper

⅓ cup chives 1 egg

PREPARATION:

1. Preheat oven to 400°F 2. Using a box grater, grate the zucchini on the coarse side. 3. Transfer the grated zucchini to a large bowl and [lightly] sprinkle with salt. Mix the

zucchini and set aside for 20 minutes while the salt draws moisture from the zucchini.

4. Transfer the zucchini to a large kitchen towel and strain the excess liquid into a bowl.

5. Place the zucchini back to the large bowl and toss in the chives, parmesan, oregano, garlic powder, black pepper, and egg, and mix until well combined.

6. Portion the zucchini mixture into 6 even hash brown patties on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

7. Bake for 35 minutes, until golden brown. 8. Cool the hash browns for 10-15 minutes to set. 9. Serve with desired dipping sauce. Enjoy!
