    Making a Temari

Hello, I'm Satan, and I'd like to talk to you about temari. Temari are little Japanese toys,

meant for tossing around and rolling on the floor. In ancient times, they were made out ofkimono remnants and wrapped so tightly they bounced. These days, they're made fromstyrofoam balls and produced mainly for display purposes. Today, yatsu has asked me toteach eerybody how to make the temari you see aboe, and since I'm under contractualobligation with her to do so, I decided to agree. !esides, she agreed to take all the picturesand mess with that whole "#hotoshop$ thing. I may be the un%uestioned ruler of the damned, but #hotoshop gies me gyp the same as eeryone else. The other thing I'e decided is tocall this particular pattern Himawari becase I'm a meglomaniacal domination&obsessed uh, Imean, because it's a sunflower pattern, and himawari is the Japanese word for sunflower.eah, that's it. The original pattern, along with many others, can be found athttp())www.temarikai.com) .

Today's class can be diided up into seeral chapters, thusly(

*. Materials. +biously, these are the things you'll need in order to fabricate the ball. They'renot too epensie, and a trip to your local craft store should supply you with eerything youneed.

-. rapping the ball. This is the most time&consuming and ultimately dull section of making atemari, and thus it is the one I prefer inflict upon you first. The fact that you have to startwith this step has nothing to do with it, I swear.

/. Sectioning. This part inoles laying down some threads in a set pattern as a sort of

scaffolding upon which the rest of your stitching will lie. 0lso dull and boring. !wahahah1

    2. Stitching. Here's where you actually stitch the design. 3sually goes %uite %uickly and isinstantly rewarding, as you get to see the pattern forming right before your eyes. 45657

    8. There is no fie, I 9ust like the number.

So, without further ado, let's get started, shall we:

    ;hapter Two( The rapping

The first step, as mentioned aboe, is to wrap thatball up like a mummy. +ne recommendation says touse at least 2AA yards. If you're doing a white wrap, you might want to use more, as any darker threads

in your design will show through the wrap otherwise.

The other thing you could do at this stage is insert abell into the middle of your ball. !efore you startwrapping, you slice the thing open with a serratedblade, care out a small caity, and stick the bell inthere. >lue the ball shut again, and then wrap. If youhae small)frisky kitties, you may not want to do this,as they will play. Then again, maybe you do want todo this...

    ;hapter Three( Beep rapping

ou will be wrapping for some time. #lease do notbe alarmed.

    ;hapter Cour( Still More rapping

hat's that, you say: That ball looks solid: oucan't see any styrofoam through the brownanymore: es, I know. #lease continue to wrap for abit after the styrofoam disappears. hy: !D;03SDI 0M S0T0E 0EF I ;+MM0EF IT1 3h, I mean, because this is the base layer that you'll be attachingyour design to, so you want a firm foundation. 0lso, ifyou haen't got a thick enough wrap, your thread willshow through when you start and end rounds. ou'llsee later. ith the wrapping, that is. hen you think you'e got enough on there 4are you sure you'egot enough:7 go ahead and cut your thread, leaing a tail of *- * inches. Thread that tailthrough your needle and weae it back into the ball. If you end up with a ery short bit thatyou can't fit back through the ball, clip it off as close as you can to the ball without snipping

any of the thread you'e already laid down. That would be ery bad, and I'd hae to comeafter you, 'kay: 4K6K7

    ;hapter Si( Sectioning

This is where the magic of temari begins. 0lthough possibly, as eidenced by "shiny1$the magic may hae begun much earlier for yatsu.

Most temari balls are diided up into?, *A, *-, or * sections. Some een hae

as many as --1 This initial diision has ahuge impact on the end design, so don'tmess it up, 'kay: 4K6K7 +ur Himawari designactually has * diisions, so let's get started.

a7 The Thin hite Gineemember that thin strip of paper I

had you get: This is where we use it. 3se apin to stick it somewhere on the ball. Itliterally does not matter where. This will bethe future top of your ball, code named The

    Eorth #ole.

rap the paper around the ball to meetthe pin again at the other side. ;ut off anyecess paper. our paper now measures eactlythe circumference of your ball. ays.

Eet, fold the paper in half, lay it flataround the ball again, and mark another pin at

that fold. This is eactly half&way 'round fromyour other pin. Fon't tell the feds, but this is TheSouth #ole.

  • 8/9/2019 Temari Tutorial by Yatsu

    6/18

Cold the paper in half again, and mark this newfold at a couple of places. This is the D%uator, also called an +bi in the Japanese tradition. Then remoe the paper from the ball 4careful notto lose The Eorth #ole17 and fold it again. ounow hae a paper diided into eigths. If you'd

like, you can clip little notches in it. yatsu'spaper was too thin to do this, so she ended upmarking all the folds with a pencil so her sorryecuses for eyeballs could get a fi on them.

0lign this paper with one of the +bi pointsyou'e 9ust made 4yatsu chose that pink one,;, because she's inscrutible7 and pin the paperin place, 9ust as you were doing for The Eorth#ole. Eow grab some more pins, and placeone at each fold.

That's the foundation for eightsections. +n most beginner's balls, this isas far as you'll hae to go with pins. TheHimawari ball, howeer, re%uires siteen

sections, so we'll need to fold the paper inhalf one more time and mark those new foldlines with still more pins.

This is yatsu's ball with all its obi pinsin place. The Eorth #ole is that whitepin, and the pins that hae been pushed

in around The D%uator are the ones weput in on that first go round, the onesthat diided the ball into eight sections. The little pink one to the right that'spushed in is The Dast. That's notnecessary for the design, yatsu's 9ustanal enough to re%uire the ball to hae aproper east and west in addition to TheEorth #ole and The South #ole.

b7 Dnough with the #aper1Dnough with the paper, indeed.

Take your marking thread 4that's thebrown pearle7 and thread yourneedle. ou'll need a length of threadlong enough to go around your ball at

least *A times, but you'll probablywant a little more for tacking andcomfort factor. Tie a knot in one end.

#ush your needle underneaththe wrap 4in this case, that's underthe dark brown sewing thread7 andcome up at The Eorth #ole. #ull it sothe knot gets caught under the wrap.If you'e wrapped it well, the markingthread won't show at all.

rap your thread around thecircumference of the ball, taking carenot to pull the thread out of alignment. Justlay the thread beside the pins. Fon't wrapthe string around the pins, don't bend thestring. hat you want is a straight linearound the globe from The Eorth #ole, through The D%uator, past The South #ole, and back up the other side to The Eorth#ole again.

hen you reach The Eorth #ole, take a 28 degree turn and wrap around theball again. Beep doing this until you'e gonearound the ball four times. ou should haeeight e%ual sections when you're finishedwith this step.

    L&&& Gike this.

hen you get to The Eorth #olefor that fourth time, take a halfturn 4that's --.8 degrees forthose of you who insist on likingmath7 and continue wrapping.rap around the ballanother four times. hen you'redone here, you should hae *e%ual sections.

    Gike this. &&&

It's looking a little scary atthis point, but don't worry, yatsu bids me tell youeerything will be fine.

    ... ...happy &day to you,too, dear... ...

The net step is to tack down all your stitching. Some people prefer to tack at anyplace one thread crosses another, but yatsu likes to lie dangerously, so she only tacks atThe Eorth #ole and The South #ole and maybe a couple points along the obi. If you'e donesome sewing, this process will be familiar, if not, watch and learn.

Insert your needle ery close to TheEorth #ole and die under the wrap aswell as themarking threads. ;ome backout 9ust beyond The Eorth #ole.

This creates a short stitch that wraps all themarking threads and anchors them to thewrapping. Make two or three of these stitches, until The Eorth #ole is secure.

  • 8/9/2019 Temari Tutorial by Yatsu

    9/18

    Here's The Eorth #ole, tackingfinished. &&&

L&&& Try not to do this. It's 9ust obnoious.

hat are you, some kind ofpuppy: Isn't the thing markedenough: Eo. 4 yatsu: pleasedo not urinate on yourball.7 un your thread downunderneath the wrap and come up atone of the +bi pins. It might take acouple of stitches to get there, 9ustremember to come up and go downin the same spot, so you don't getany nasty stitches showing.

    L&&& like this.

  • 8/9/2019 Temari Tutorial by Yatsu

    10/18

this: this is bad. &&&Fon't do this.

yatsu chose to go  down to that pink Dast  pin, but really it doesn't

    matter.

hen you get where you're going, wrap your thread around TheD%uator, 9ust as you were doing forthe ertical lines. It doesn't matterwhich direction, 9ust don't pull it

askew. >o all the way around andthen tack that side down. If you'regoing to tack all around the obi, now's the time to do it. Just slideyour needle under the wrap to eachnew point, tack, and slide under tothe net point. ash, rinse, repeat.

  • 8/9/2019 Temari Tutorial by Yatsu

    11/18

hen you're done tacking, slide your needle underagain, this time down to The South #ole. emember, tiny stitches to anchor it to the wrapping. henyou'e got that secured, slide your needle under thewrap and clip it off.

The picture aboe is yatsu's completedThe South #ole. To the right is yatsuattempting not to chop off her own thumbwith a pair of scissors.

The stitch we'll be using for thisfirst round is the basic temari stitch.#retty much all other stitches are 9ustariations of this one. here's a niftydiagram yatsu drew up for us. &&&

... and here's how it looks on a ball. &&&

!asically what you're doing is a series ofherringbone stitches. So let's die in for amore in&depth eplaination, shall we:

a7 Goad up your thread with the lighteryellow. How much thread: 0s much asyou're comfortable with. e don't wantto hae to restart the thread eery fieseconds, but we don't want the thingtangling up and knotting all the timeeither. yatsu uses about a yard at atime. Tie a knot in one end and dieyour needle into the wrap some pointnot too far from The Eorth #ole. ou'llbe coming up again 9ust to the left ofone of your ertical marking threadsabout * cm from The Eorth #ole. If

you'd like, you can mark this * cm thesame way we'e been markingeerything else. Just measure off * cmon the strip of paper and stick your pinsin. 0s for yatsu, see aboestatement concerning risk.

    13/18

#ictures are really better than wordsat this point, but I'm loathe to admitthat yatsu can do anything betterthan me, so I'm going to try somewords anyway.

;ross your thread down to the rightto a point about - cm from the obiwrap and half way between the twoad9acent marking threads. #ut yourneedle in, make the smallest stitch inthe world, and make it from right toleft. hen you point the thread backup to the right towards the top of theball, you should end up with an N.

Eow go back up towards The Eorth#ole, and make another orld'sTiniest Stitch, from right to left, * cmfrom The Eorth #ole and directly onthe marking line. 0s you can see, yatsu's stitch is indeed a tadlopsided. Try not to do that, kay:4K6K7 ou want nice, een stitches.

ou'e got one O shape now, right:>ood 9ob1 Eow you 9ust repeat thatsame O, all the way around the ball, with the tops right on the markinglines, and the bottoms half&waybetween them1

    14/18

It turns out yatsu's guestimation of re%uired thread wasn't, how shall we say, accurate, so shetook the opportunity to takes some pictures of how to end and start a thread. It's super easy.

!ury your ecess thread in the wrap and clip it close. Then get some more thread, tie yourknot in one end and start up again, 9ust like you did at the beginning, burying the knot in thewrap and making more Ns.

hen you get back around towhere you started from, completethe round by burying your threadunderneath the wrapping asnormal, and cutting close but nottoo close. Just be careful to tryand make it look like an een

stitch. ou don't want anyoneelse to guess where you stoppedor started.

    b7 Gike yellow1 +nly darker1

Cor our net trick, load your needle up with the darker yellow. +r "orange,$ if you prefer. ou'llbe doing eactly the same thing with this color that you did with the first one, ecept that whenyou make your stitches at the top and bottom, you'll be doing it aboe and below the firstround of stitches respectiely.

Tie a knot in one end of the thread and startoff as normal, coming up whereer you'd like.Surprise me. yatsu chose the bottombecause that's what she likes 4zOMGsatan, hush about that!7. Hopefully,it won't matter where you come up at thisstage, because when you finish the round, you'll be making a nice, tight little inisiblenin9a stitch.

Gay the orange thread right net to theyellow and make another stitch aboethe one you made during round one.

Truth be told, yatsu's stitches are alittle large, especially at The Eorth #ole, where it should be Pber puny, but...meh.

umor has it that the single biggest mistakemany people make on their first temari is thatthey put their stitches at the top and bottomtoo close together. The recommended distanceis about *)*@, or - millimetres. Just remember, you need to leae 9ust a bit of room so thestitches can lay down properly.

;ontinue making this round as you did the first one, laying the orange threads alongside the yellow onesand keeping your orange stitches - mm outside theyellow ones.

L&&& Try not to do this, kay: 4KK7

hen you get back around to where you began, endit off as usual, burying your thread underthe wrap.

    c7 Gike white1 +nly ... ... white.

Goad up with some white thread and makeanother round. Gay the white on the outsideof the other stitches and continue around asnormal. 0s you work this round, you'll start tosee that where the white thread makes its Nis considerably lower than where the originalyellow thread made its N. This is called"spindling,$ and has nothing to do Sleeping!eauty. It happens to be one of the maintechni%ues of temari&making.

yatsu ran out of thread half&way round thefirst white round, so she decided to snap apicture. This is partly why she ended up with?* pictures of temari&making...

It had shifted %uite a ways south during thesewing process and so she had to put it back where it belonged.
