GLHS Math Goal

• We, the math department of Grass Lake High School will improve our MME math proficiency level annually by 10% on the state assessment. To accomplish our goal we will test all students in their math classes 3 times each semester by focusing on the 5 most weighted strands on the MME. These strands include Reasoning about Numbers, Expressions and Equations, Figures and Properties, Univariate Data: Distributions, and Calculations and Algorithms. In this process we will close the gender gap 2% annually, while increasing all scores, until male and female students scores are equivalent on the MME.

Objective One: Teaching and Learning

– Teachers will design 6 assessments with different values that evaluate the 5 main math strands on the MME.

• What steps have you taken to implement the objective? – Teachers have completed 3 of these evaluations and 3

more will be delivered during the second semester of the 2009/2010 school year.

Evidence of Action• Options for Evidence:• Achievement Data with Analysis – • Evaluation Results:• Results comparing the 1st and 3rd evaluation.

1st Test 3rd Test– Far below basic 26 9– Below basic 106 52– Basic 77 79– Proficient 15 63– Advanced 2 16

Is It Working?

Is the objective implemented to the expected level based on the plan?

1. The entire math department is implementing the current plan. This totals 4 members of the high school staff.

2. The math department is utilizing forum time to administer the evaluation. They have collected data and shared the results with the staff.

Are the students making progress based on the original goal?

1. It appears progress is being made in achieving our goal. The real indicator will come when the MME results are returned.

2. All tests and evaluation information is stored in data director. The math department uses common planning time to share the results with the staff.

The true measure of success in regards to this school improvement plan will come once the MME is finished and results can be analyzed.

Objective Two: Leadership

– Teachers will complete curriculum mapping for each math course to evaluate possible gaps of instruction.

Page 7: Template for the Principal’s Mid-Year Report 2009-2010

Evidence of Action• Teachers have been given professional

development time to complete curriculum mapping.

• At the end of the semester each teacher submitted a portion of their curriculum mapping.

• The goal is to complete all curriculum mapping by the end of the 2009-2010 school year.

Objective 3: Personnel and Professional Learning

–Teachers will participate in professional development related to real world math applications that will assist in increasing female interest in mathematics.

Page 9: Template for the Principal’s Mid-Year Report 2009-2010

Evidence of Action• Outside mathematical professional development

has been limited during the 2009/2010 school year.• The ISD ran a geometry workshop that was

attended by GLHS geometry instructor and special education teacher.

• Research is being conducted on methods that can be employed that will assist in reducing the gender gap.

What’s Next?• Three additional assessments will be given

during the second semester of the 2009/2010 school year. One of these was given on Feb. 1st.

• Curriculum mapping will continue and be concluded at the end of the 2009/2010 school year.

• Professional development in all mathematical areas are needed, especially in finding methods to keep females actively engaged in learning mathematics.
