From the PulpitRabbi Michael Simon

If I were to ask you to pick the one book of the Bible that is your least favorite, you’d prob-ably pick the book of Leviticus, which we are currently in the process of reading. I say this for a number of reasons. For one, there’s no narrative in the book at all. There are no stories there to tell your children or grandchil-dren about. And much of the book is merely a manual to the priests on how to offer sacrifices;

how to kill the animals; how to burn the animals; how to shpritz the blood and so forth. So, unfortunately, for these reasons, and possibly more, studying Leviticus isn’t usu-ally high on our to do list. But the more I study the Torah, the more I realize how interesting and relevant Leviticus can really be.

The Book of Leviticus is much more than a primer on how to conduct sacrifices, or a “how to” manual for the priests in the Temple. Leviticus contains more than half of the 613 commandments that are in the Torah. And it contains many of the important moral rules such as Love Thy Neighbor As Thyself. But in its organization and detail, through the sacrificial system, the Torah gives us a deep psychological understanding of the nature of error and atonement in both public and private life.

The Torah recognizes that everyone and anyone, no matter their status in life, is capable of sinning or making a mistake but nevertheless has the opportunity for atonement by bringing a sacrifice. And so as not to embarrass the sin-ner and encourage atonement, that sacrifice is brought in the same place as the olah, or regular burnt offering. This way it would not be apparent to the casual observer that a sin offering is being brought.

This explanation reflects a great sensitivity to the role of guilt in repentance. People are often genuinely embar-rassed to have done wrong. And admitting the wrong is difficult enough without having to acknowledge one’s guilt before the entire community; in other words, publically. So the individual’s sin offering is brought anonymously. It’s brought along with other types of offerings in order to re-move public embarrassment as a potential barrier to true repentance.

So don’t read Leviticus as just a manual for priests on how to conduct sacrifices. Don’t read it as a dry descrip-tion of some ancient, arcane ritual that has nothing to do with us today. Read it how it was meant to be read. Under-stand the reasons for the sacrifices. And let’s see if we can internalize those reasons and learn from them.

Finally, on behalf of Andrea and myself, I’d like to offer my heartfelt thank you to the congregation for their well wishes and generous donations in honor of Samantha and Nir’s wedding.

We’re now coming upon the two holidays that have an incredible connection - Passover and Purim. Both holidays portray God’s protecting us from power hungry predators while fulfilling his promise to our ancestors. We sometimes forget that God is there for us today as he was for Israel in days of old even when sometimes it feels like he is not there when our questions aren’t answered.

Purim is the holiday of dreamers, a time of Jews living in exile, a story where even God himself doesn’t show up and leaves the fixer to be Esther.

Now we fast forward to the next full moon and we find ourselves at the story of real redemption, followed by revelation.

The connection between dreaming, thinking and imagining is such an important part of moving forward; it’s about realizing our dreams can become reality. In order to do this we must act on what we dream. The time from Purim to Passover is when the moon goes from full to new to full again and our dreams can come to fruition. Passover, the exodus is the story of true redemption.

Whatever you’re thinking about in your life that you always wanted to do: change, take a trip, move into a new home –the time between Purim and Passover, the cycle of renovation is the best time to make things happen. Have fun and courage and go with it!

President’s Message

Of course, our Gala was a huge success! Our Cantor Glozman is amazing and entertained a sold-out crowd! Under the leadership of Ronda Bellsey and her chair people and committees, the Gala was organized and raised much

needed funds for TBK. Where do we go from here?Temple Beth Kodesh is the talk of the town. Did

you notice the number of new attendees at Shabbat services? They did not just get lost on 26th Avenue and walk in our doors. Our members are causing ripples, the ripples are getting larger and the tidal waves are being felt throughout the entire Boynton Beach area. Please be welcoming to strangers (visitors), as our Torah mentions many times. We even have a parking space, right out front, for visitors.

Purim is followed by Pesach and the yearly cycle will start again. Do not forget to make your Pesach Seder reservations. Pesach is early this year, April 3rd, and we are expecting the “Seder of Seders.”. This year we have a really high-end Kosher Caterer, Greinseids. Both Rabbi Simon and Cantor Glozman will co-lead our seder and I hear we are having salt water for an appetizer. Fun will be had by all. Chag Sameach!

All the best,Len Epstein, President

FUNDRAISINGMARCH 2015

I am writing this article early (very) on February 23—just a few hours after the Gala and Concert. Cantor Glozman---you are a true genius---we are so unbelievable lucky to have you as our Chazzan. Your concert was exquisite—every second of it. I know I speak for

the entire congregation when I say we had a concert worthy of the Metropolitan Opera House.

And our Gala Dinner was wonderful. And so different from anything we have ever done. I hope you will see the pictures of our members dancing and partying and the beautiful presentation of food. Really – it was quite an event.

And, I cannot thank our committee enough so I am going to thank them again (and again): Izzy Bordainick; Mort Cooper; Art Farkas; Madolyn Geldbart; Lynn Karten; Charlotte Kesten; Laura Kurtzman; James Meckley; Lee Noskin; Marilyn Olson; Ellen Shore; Carrin Simmons; Joan Sircus; Steve Slade; Marilyn Solomon; Pauline and Allan Tapper; Al Traum; Harvey Wallet and Liz Taylor-Watnick. And, always Fritz who is perfection. And, Len and Sherry Epstein who are the true backbones of our shul.

Rabbi Simon—you are more than our spiritual leader—you are the reason we are successful.

I want to say a very special thank you to the women who worked unbelievably hard and that is to Carrin, Liz and Joan Sircus. I know the hours that went into this event and these three women never said NO no matter what the task. And, I assure you, some of the tasks were way beyond our job descriptions.

I want to say my last thank you to the congregants who participated—with smiles on their faces—who always participate with joy and happiness. You are the reason being a member of TBK is such a joy.

Ronda Bellsey, Liz Taylor-Watnick, Carrin Simmons

Men’s Club Chatter

On January 25th we had our general Men’s Club Membership meeting, and I would like to thank those that attended.

There was a discussion of undertaking a survey to determine why temple members are not renewing and belonging

to the Men’s Club. What are the reasons for not joining, it was suggested that this be done by phone, and that a telephone squad be established. The board will be looking into this suggestion. I described the many initiatives the men’s club board undertook to seek new members, including letters in the general temple mailings, even offering a one year membership for 2015 to new temple members, and yet our membership is down.

The board is also looking into a recommendation that the Men’s Club confine its every other month events to a breakfast with a guest speaker, ranging from politics, to Israel, to sports, etc.

Let’s not forget the TBK Men’s Club Cruise, February 28th to March 6th, 2016. Look for the flyer in the Temple lobby and the Shalom. For more details you can contact Herb Shore, 561- 498- 4218 or Irving Schecter, 561-704-3334.
