What do your ideas look like?

The next time you have an idea, grab a piece of paperand sketch it out. Now take a look. How did youtranslate it from your brain to the page? Did you writea paragraph? Draw a picture? Make a diagram? Nowask a coworker to sketch the same idea chances are, their page will look very different from yours.

What do your ideas look like?

There are many different kinds of thinkers. Moreoften than not, we wind up working with people

who understand the world in vastly different waysfrom ourselves. Its what we mean when we say, great ideas can come fromanywhere. Sometimes, whats obvious in one

mode of thinking is remarkably complex inanother. By putting different kinds of thinkers on aproblem, we can compose a greater range ofcreative solutions.

What do your ideas look like?

Ive found a list of the ten most prevalent types ofthinking youre likely to encounter . I dont mean

to say that every individual falls into one categoryor another. Most people can think across severalmodes, depending on the situation, but everyonetends to have a few styles theyre most comfortable

in no one is equally adept at them all. Greatagencies build diverse teams that can approach aproblem from several angles.

    1. Storyteller Storytellers like to think in narratives. Ideas are usually

linear and have distinct beginnings, middles andends. Most traditional creative copywriters tend tothink this way, excellent for narrative media like TVbut can be a bit of a struggle in less narrative-baseddigital media.

    2. Visually MindedA picture is worth a thousand words. Visual thinkers

are adept at conveying a larger idea through carefullychosen visuals. Its no surprise they make great artdirectors and designers.

    3. Systems Oriented System thinkers fuss over the relationships between

things. Instead of developing a big narrative, they try tomap out and understand how all the moving parts fit

together. Theylove flowcharts and diagrams. This type of thinking is readily apparent in the platform

strategies of digital brands like Apple, Adobe andGoogle. The true value of each company is predicated not

just on their individual products, but how all their productswork together seamlessly. Planning and understandingthat connection is where system thinkers shine.

    4. AssociativeAssociative thinkers look at the patterns between

things. They have a tendency to express themselvesthrough metaphor and proxy. They often lay out ideasin a chaotic fashion and are extremely prone todigressions. For example, there is a famousdigression scene from Catcher in the Rye.

    4. Associative [Mr. Vinson] could drive you crazy sometimes, him

and the goddam class. I mean hed keep telling you

to unify and simplify all the time. Some things youjust cant do that to. Its nice when somebody tellsyou about their uncle. Especially when they startout telling you about their fathers farm and then

all of a sudden get more interested in their uncle. Imean its dirty to keep yelling Digression! at him

when hes all nice and excited. I dont know. Itshard to explain.

    5. Logical Logical thinkers break problems down into a series of

choices. They focus heavily on the structure ofdecision-making, often establishing rubrics, filters andother tools that can not only institutionalizeknowledge, but be used to teach computers how toautomate tasks.

Not only are they great programmers, but they alsomake some mean spreadsheets.

    6. Organizers Have you ever met someone who had a knack for

simplifying complex lists into simplecategories? They probably fall here. Organizers

are excellent and grouping and bucketing ideas, personnel, files you name it. They have a habitof breaking things down by function, which makesthem excellent programmers, but also excellent

project and account managers as well. They tend to have the most amazing file cabinets

    and binders.

    7. Architects This mode of thinking is very similar to that of the

organizers, but instead of grouping by function, theyarrange in terms of hierarchy. Traditionally, this iscalled Information Architecture and produces the kindof tree layout shown above.

    8. Intuitives Like a sculptor, intuitives often start with a rough idea

of what theyre trying to create. As they graduallymould their creation, it begins to take form, often inunexpected (and wonderful) ways. They know theyredone when it feels right.

    8. Intuitives Bill Moggridge, founder of IDEO, explains:

If you think about the structure of the mind, there justseems to be a small amount that is above the waterequivalent to an icebergwhich is the explicit partMost academic subjects are designed to live in thatexplicit part that sticks out of the water.

    8. Intuitives If you can find a way to harness, towards a productive

goal, the rest of it, the subconscious [understanding],the tacit knowledge, the behaviorjust doing it and

the intuitionall those, then you can bring in the restof the iceberg. And that is hugely valuable. I meanevery scientist is an intuitive person, and most ahascome from intuition anyway.

    8. Intuitives They are known to cause panic attacks in more

structured thinkers who prefer to have a concretesense of where theyre going.

    9. Leaders Leaders are goal-oriented individuals. They lay out

the objectives and the timeline and lead the troopsinto the breach. They may not have charted acourse, but they have a clear-eyed understandingof where the team is now and where it needs to go.

In films, montage-time helps bridge the gap

between the inspirational speech and ultimatesuccess. In the real world, they rely on thededication of their team to get to the finish.

imagine how things could be without regard forfeasibility. Often, their ideas inspire more grounded

thinkers to take bold, innovative steps.

Conclusion Its good to take note of the different kinds of thinkers

around you. Pay attention to how your coworkersdiagram their thoughts and keep it in mind when

assigning tasks to teams of individuals. Instead ofpushing likeminded individuals together (i.e. abrainstorm of programmers) try deliberately formingdifferently minded teams.

Interesting things happen when you pair two or threevery different types of minds together. Sometimes, allgreatness needs is a little perspective.
