Test Instructions
Four Ways to Use the “Cloze” Tests for Easy English NEWSPrintoutthetestsandmakecopiesforeverystudent.Choosethemostappropriatewaytousethetests:
1.Afterreadingthearticle,havestudentsworkinpairstofindthecorrectwordfromthewordbanktowriteintheblanks.Theymaychecktheiranswersusingthenewspaper.
2.Afterreadingthearticle,havestudentsworkalonetowritethecorrectwordsfromthewordbankintheblanks.
3.TearofftheWordBankatthebottomofthepagebeforehandingoutthepagetostudents.Afterreadingthearticleandhavingcopiedandstudiedthespellingsintheparagraph,havestudentswriteinthecorrectwordsasyoudictatetheparagraph.HandbacktheWordBanksostudentscanchecktheirspelling.
4.Beforereadingthearticle,andbeforehandingoutthetestpagetostudents,tearofftheWordBankatthebottomofthepage.Havestudentsworkinpairsorgroupsofthreetocomeupwithwordsthatwouldmakegoodsentences.(Theremaybemanycorrectanswersinfact,sochecktheirpapersforcorrectgrammar.)Thenhavestudentsreadthearticleandredothetest.
Three ways to use “Which Word Does Not Belong?”
Printoutthetestandmakecopiesforeachstudent.
1.Discussionactivity:Havestudentsworkinpairsanddiscusseachsetoffourwordsfollowingeachnumber.Havethemtalkaboutreasonswhythreeofthewordsgotogetherandonedoesnot.Theyeachcircletheiranswerontheirpaper.
2.Wordcomprehension/speakingactivity:Havestudentsworkaloneandcirclethewordthatdoesnotbe-longwiththerest.Later,gooverthetestorally,andaskstudentstogivereasonsfortheiranswers.Example: Florida, Puerto Rico and New Mexico were all part of Spain. But Spain was the mother county.Or,iftheymightsay,People in Florida, Puerto Rico, and New Mexico are citizens of the United States, but the people in Spain are not.Ortheymightsay,Florida, Puerto Rico and New Mexico are in or near North America, but Spain is in Europe. Ortheymightsay,Florida, New Mexico, and Spain are not islands, but Puerto Rico is an island.Iftheirreasoningisvalid,theiransweriscorrect.Theremaybemorethanonecorrectanswertoaquestion.
3.Havestudentscirclethewordthatdoesnotbelongwiththeothersandwriteouttheirreasons.
