“Oh boy, oh boy, yum-yum” thinks Tucker, as his mom brings home the groceries. “I KNOW she got me something special. She al-ways remembers.” As he watches her unpack the bags, out comes a big, shiny, red, DElICIOUS-looking, heart-shaped box. As he licks his lips, Tucker thinks to himself “that heart must be for me because she loves me sooo much!” When mom leaves the room Tucker immediately walks over to the box, sniffs it and thinks “Yup, it’s definitely for me! It smells so yummy!”

Minutes later…. (and a belly full of dark chocolate candy) Mom comes in to discover the mess and starts yelling at me. “I wonder why? What did I do? I know that box was just for me”. And so this begins another adventure with Tucker at the veterinary clinic.

Chocolate flavored candy or desserts are a favor-ite with just about everyone, even our pets. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, this is an opportune time to discuss the different types of chocolate and the danger they pose to our furry family members. Chocolate is manufactured

from the seeds of the Cacao tree. These trees grow best in tropical climates where wildlife feed on the sweet fruit, called cacao pods, which encapsulate the seeds. These seeds, which are extremely bitter tasting, are packed with two drugs, caffeine and theobromine. It’s these seeds that are used to make chocolate flavoring. After harvesting the cacao pods from the Cacao tree, they are opened and the seeds are scooped out. The seeds are then placed under banana leaves to undergo fermentation causing them to turn dark brown and create that fabulous chocolate flavor. Before the seeds can be stored in sacks and shipped to chocolate manufacturers, they are dried which takes about one week. After arrival at the factories, the seeds are processed to produce the desired consistency for chocolate liquor, semisweet chocolate or milk chocolate.

As we all know chocolate can be eaten plain or as flavoring in cakes, cookies, ice cream or other desserts. These sweets not only contain varying amount of chocolate but also a large amount of fat. It’s the high fatty content in these foods that are the first problem for our pets. The accidental ingestion of these can lead to a fatal metabolic disease called pancre-atitis. In these cases it’s the fat and sugar, not the chocolate that are the culprits. The main symptoms that ensue are vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy.

TROUBLE WITH TUCKERValentine’s Day

The primary toxic drug in chocolate is theo-bromine. The quantity of this depends upon the amount of chocolate liquor in the product. The highest is in baking chocolate followed by semisweet and dark chocolate, followed by milk chocolate and lastly chocolate favored cakes and cookies. Signs of theobromine tox-icity include vomiting/diarrhea, hyperactivity, tremors, seizures, rapid and irregular heart rate and in severe cases death. The toxic dose causing mild symptoms is 9 mg. /pound of body weight with twice this amount causing severe symptoms. Milk chocolate contains 44 mg. / per ounce of theobromine and semi-sweet contains 150 mg. /per ounce and baking

chocolate contains 390 mg. /ounce. Once a dog has ingested chocolate is takes up to four days to work its way out the body. Therefore, if a pet has just ingested chocolate, vomit-ing can be induced to eliminate it from the stomach before the drug has an opportunity to do its damage. In cases where the ingestion occurred many hours previous to the discov-ery of the incident then hospitalization and supportive care are need until the chocolate is out of the body.

Giving chocolate candy at Valentine’s Day is a way of saying “I love you” but definitely not for our pets!


As we start the New Year with new resolutions and new rou-tines, it is time to take a look at what matters most, what is ticking in our fuzzy friends or how it is ticking for that matter. The heart is a vital organ that is a simple muscular pump that is divided into four chambers; two on the left and two on the right. We’re going to go over some of the instigators, healers, and ideas on how to prevent heart problems in your pets. Heart disease in certain large breeds accounts for 95% of dogs middle-aged and beyond. Having an overweight animal makes the heart work over-time because of a lack of exercise or another illness or injury that is present on top of the heart ail-ment. You can steadily improve a dog’s overweight condition by simply starting your pet on an exercise program, a little bit every day. Dogs will generally suf-fer from what is called

Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). It’s a relatively slow worsening of symptoms as the heart struggles to com-pensate because of an oxy-gen-depletion.

Coughing fits soon follow. As the condition get worse, all of the organs start to deteriorate because the heart can’t pump essential nutrient-rich blood as quickly or as readily as it used to.

New studies have suggested that the most likely cause of heart disease of all types is the lack of two nutrients: Taurine and L-Carnitine.

The good thing is that these two nutrients may help prevent heart disease. The bad thing is that there is no way of telling if your dog is deficient. The only way to tell if these nutrients are lacking is to have a biopsy of the heart tissue, which is a procedure not currently per-formed on any living thing.

Taurine is an amino acid found naturally in the muscle tissue all over the body and most abundant in the heart. It also assists in the main-tenance of cell membranes, protects the heart from an overload of calcium, and regulates the heart beat. The L-Carnitine is a cross between two other amino acids; Lysine and Methionine.

L-Carnitine is a substance with protein-like charac-teristics that helps the cells cart the “fuel” in the form of fatty acids to help support the heart. Amino acids are the building blocks of pro-tein that help muscles build and function properly. Both of these nutrients have been proven to make life expectan-cy much longer by improving cardiac function. If you are already dealing with an illness such as an onset of pancreatitis (refer to next arti-cle), you have to be on the look

out for other issues that may become present. Dog owners tend to forget that they need to be weary of other fatal com-plications that can occur with an onset of pancreatitis. Heart disease, Diabetes, liver/kid-ney failure, Hypothyroidism, Maldigestion Syndrome, Heart Arrhythmias, and even acute renal failure can often occur. Getting a yearly check-up at the vet can ensure that you aren’t dealing with anything life threatening and that you’re doing what’s right. Go see your Holistic Vet for healthy nutri-tional solutions. Never fear though there is always an alternative. Nutrition-wise, put your pooch on the mend with quality protein and quality ingredients not fillers or by-products or gluten meals. Can we say “Yuck”? Many doctors are now reversing human heart disease, which was considered incurable not to long ago, with food as their medicine and no salt. “Prescription diets” are com-monly over-priced foods that contain low-quality, over-processed and extremely refined ingredients that are formulated to “manage” your dog’s condition, not to sup-port his body in the healing process. Food in its natural-state is our number one med-icine. It has been since we were created and always will

be. The root of virtually all good drugs come predomi-nantly from natural sources, such as vegetables, fruits, FDA regulated meats, and quality herbs. Commercial dog food is made from left-over parts from the slaugh-terhouse which is not closely regulated by the FDA. This is something to keep in mind before you go out and buy Ol’ Roy or something similar. Bear in mind, that every case of heart disease is unique in its own right and needs to be diagnosed and understood for that particular pet. Please visit your nearest holistic vet-

erinarian. They are just, fair and will tell you what’s best for your best friend.

It’s time for Mardi Gras!! Get out those crazy pet costumes and head on down to Galveston this year to celebrate Mardi Gras with your glamoured up fur-kid and plenty of treats. The 12th annual Krewe of Barkus & Meoux Parade is sponsored by and benefits the Galveston Island Humane Society.

This wonderful parade highlights the Galveston Mardi Gras celebration and this year it will be on the day of love, Sunday, February 14th. The parade begins at 1 p.m. at 27th and Seawall Blvd., but check in and registration begins at 11 a.m. at 26th and Seawall Blvd. Not just your pets, but owners are encouraged to dress in Mardi Gras costumes as well, so make sure that hair looks fabulous and all the bows and beads are in order for the

costume contest just before the parade begins.

The Grand Marshall for this year’s parade will be the one and only King Tux, Moody Gardens’ very own penguin mascot. Alongside King Tux will be the color guard from Ball High School. So make sure you register your pet early. Registration is $20 per pet, if you pre-register by Feb. 5th, and also comes with the 2010 parade T-shirt. Registration at the parade is

This year the proceeds gathered from the parade will go towards the spay/neuter project, “Fix’em for $5”, which will kick off the week of Feb. 22nd to promote National Spay Day USA. All participants of the parade will need to show a current rabies vaccination, and remember to bring your leash since all pets must be on one, but make sure it is not longer than 6 feet, and please no retract-able leashes. We don’t want anyone getting tangled and messing up their costumes, do we?

The parade this year will begin at 27th and Seawall

Blvd. and move west ending at the Academy parking lot. Winners from the judging will be announced at the end of the parade in the tent stag-ing area at Academy. And Don’t Forget Your Beads, as there will not be any hand-ed out at the parade. So if you’re throwing, make sure you come packing!!!

The Galveston Humane Society would like to send out a special invitation to all res-cue groups to attend and be a part of the parade. Cost is $25 per organization, so please have a representative con-tact the Galveston Humane Society prior to the parade to make arrangements and reg-ister for the parade.

How can we ensure that our dog will main-tain it’s newly found skills and good behav-ior that you have worked hard to build through your training classes?

You guessed it…continued training! We know this to be true in our own lives. If we play a musical instrument, we practice, practice, practice to get better, better, better. We stop playing for several years, then go back and try to play a piece or two…not NEARLY as good as were ‘back in the day’ when we practiced and played regularly. The same is true with our dogs. If we don’t practice and sharpen their skills, they will never improve and in fact their skills will deteriorate. Our abilities as owner/trainers will also deteriorate over time if we don’t use them regularly with our dogs.

The Same Routine

Dogs are creatures of habit and routine. This is a very innate, genetic predisposition with canines. They are much more at ease and confident when there are regular routines in place. This well-being and confidence they have as a result helps to minimize the develop-ment of negative behaviors.

How easy is that? Feed them at regular times, walk them at regular times, train with them at regular times and play with them at regu-lar times. “The same old routine?” Yes! The result: the same old well-behaved doggie that we are proud to call a member of the family.

But wait, there’s more

Either way, he landed himself in lock up, the shelter, hard time Daley. Golden Retriever Rescue Houston (GRRH) found him in the nick of time and plucked him out. Now he’s with us, Daley, our first foster dog. He’s handsome. But he’s not, as they say, for the faint of heart.

He moves with force equally proportionate to his lack of pre-cision. If this is the china shop he is that bull. Our boy, Daley, breaks things, spills things, trips over and fumbles under things. You might call him a bad dog. Our cat does. But you

might also see he is full of heart.

His heart, it turns out, is full of worms. He’s up against it, the proverbial “it.” They say poison will heal him, arsenic injected in small doses so it doesn’t kill him, just the worms. He seems oblivious, Daley. It’s not just the illness; he’s oblivi-ous to everything really. Think “scarecrow” not “tin man” – all heart, no brains.

Train Daley. So I do. We click for sits and downs and eye contact, the basics. He catches on and then gets so excited the leaps at the bowl of kibble and

clears the table of everything. The accident terrifies him. I reach for his collar so I can put him in the crate and clean things up. He cowers and vom-its. I stop and hold him. Who hurt you? Who forgot to love you, Daley?

Dear Daley, I promise you this: you will heal here and learn. And when it’s time we’ll send you off with a warm hug and damp eyes. We’ll hand over our charge to the people of your forever home. Take our big furry valentine. He has a good heart of gold. Love Daley.

love Daley. Train Daley. That’s our charge. It’s our schedule too, pun fully intended. Daley is an 18 month old golden retriever, sadly underweight, woefully undertrained. He’s lost in our crazy world. Maybe that’s why he lost his family. He couldn’t find his way. Or they couldn’t find it in their hearts to show him the way.
