This will really be a NEW year with major changes in our retiree club. For starters, our 2018 annual meeting will be held in San Angelo, the first time out of Arlington. To take a quote from J & J Chairman Gorsky, “During this time of unparalleled change, it is vital that we do not become fixated on this very moment; but rather take a longer- term view and look much further ahead.” Of course he was talking about the future of the 132 year old company, while I am referring only to our retirement community! There are sure to be bumps along the way as we transition to a more inclusive board and a different way of having board meetings. Using newer technology we have started having our board meetings over the internet via video conferencing so folks won’t have to travel just for a one or two hour meeting. This should open up the possibility for officers to be chosen from distant lo- cations. That is important because of the very active San Angelo plant, which is still generating retirees. For example, our listing of Texas retirees sent from New Brunswick shows over 600 names in San Angelo alone, compared to 300 (+/_) spread throughout the D/FW Metroplex, 200 or so in the Sherman area and another smaller group we rarely ever see located in El Paso and other locations in Texas. By becoming more inclu- sive and shifting meeting locations, perhaps we can survive as an even larger, more active club. We are tru- ly scaered over a very large area and it may even be that in the future we might consider a longer, perhaps a weekend event in one of the many resort areas available in Texas. Since this year marks the end of my second two year term as your President we must use our next election to be more inclusive and have officers from locations other than Arlington or Sherman. A nominating com- miee comprised of members from the various locations should get us a new set of officers. Perhaps with new officers and, hopefully, new ideas we can become a club which serves some non-political, non-religious charitable cause for the benefit of our society. Wouldn’t that be a great legacy for the Johnson & Johnson Retiree Club of Texas (founded by Priscilla Rogers) to create? President’s Message

Greetings to all with this first newsletter in 2018!

This will really be a NEW year with major changes in our retiree club.

For starters, our 2018 annual meeting will be held in San Angelo, the

first time out of Arlington. To take a quote from J & J Chairman

Gorsky, “During this time of unparalleled change, it is vital that we

do not become fixated on this very moment; but rather take a longer-

term view and look much further ahead.” Of course he was talking

about the future of the 132 year old company, while I am referring

only to our retirement community!

There are sure to be bumps along the way as we transition to a more

inclusive board and a different way of having board meetings. Using

newer technology we have started having our board meetings over

the internet via video conferencing so folks won’t have to travel just

for a one or two hour meeting. This should open up the possibility for officers to be chosen from distant lo-

cations. That is important because of the very active San Angelo plant, which is still generating retirees. For

example, our listing of Texas retirees sent from New Brunswick shows over 600 names in San Angelo alone,

compared to 300 (+/_) spread throughout the D/FW Metroplex, 200 or so in the Sherman area and another

smaller group we rarely ever see located in El Paso and other locations in Texas. By becoming more inclu-

sive and shifting meeting locations, perhaps we can survive as an even larger, more active club. We are tru-

ly scattered over a very large area and it may even be that in the future we might consider a longer, perhaps

a weekend event in one of the many resort areas available in Texas.

Since this year marks the end of my second two year term as your President we must use our next election

to be more inclusive and have officers from locations other than Arlington or Sherman. A nominating com-

mittee comprised of members from the various locations should get us a new set of officers. Perhaps with

new officers and, hopefully, new ideas we can become a club which serves some non-political, non-religious

charitable cause for the benefit of our society. Wouldn’t that be a great legacy for the Johnson & Johnson

Retiree Club of Texas (founded by Priscilla Rogers) to create?

Annual Banquet Information / Input Needed

The date for this year’s banquet has been set for October 24 & 25 in San Angelo, TX. In addition to the ban-

quet, the San Angelo plant manager has offered to give plant tours to those interested. Previously, the club

has provided bus transportation from San Angelo and Sherman to Arlington for the annual event. This

year we need to provide similar bus transportation from Arlington and Sherman out to San Angelo. In or-

der to properly plan it is IMPERATIVE that we get solid information on those who plan on attending the

event, AND if they would also be planning to take the bus. Thus we are asking that those who plan to

come, let us know the requested information by the end of April. The preparations for the event can only

be as good as the data we have giving intent to come.

You can email intent to: [email protected] or call or email one of the officers directly (contact information is

on last page of newsletter)

3. A letter of reference from a teacher or administrator.

4. The name and address of the higher learning institution they plan to attend.

There have been years when we had a tremendous amount of applications submitted and a few years when we had very little response. Be sure to let your Senior High School Student know about the availability of our scholarship and encourage them to begin working on it now. Because of today’s economy, $2,000 can make a difference.

MEMBERSHIP MADE SIMPLE

Remember the Board in 2017 made it easier for you, and the treasurer, by having both the yearly dues and the ban-

quet registration due at the SAME TIME. THIS WILL NOT BE DUE UNTIL LATER THIS YEAR. DO NOT SEND ANYTHING

TO THE TREASURER AT THIS TIME. We do not anticipate any change to the total amount paid for dues and banquet

fees in 2018. A form for paying will be posted on the web site and in the newsletter later in the year.
